has the command of the United States forces at Cairo, and is, therefore, likely to
be called into action at an early day, is «
native of Illinois, or at least, he has lived
there from boyhood. He went to the Mexican war asthe Lieutenant of an Tilinois,
company, and wae selected by the lamentled J.J. Hardio as bis adjutant. By Har. din’# side he foughtin every battle until
. that gallant chteftain fell, and with bis own
hande he helped to dress his corpse for the
last rites of humanity. During that entire
. campaign he was the most intimate com. panion of that lamented officer, and the
