Ewer, of the Grass Valley National, who left for Washoe a few weeks ago, has recently returned. In his “ and Incidents on the Way,” we find the relative to the discovery of the Henness Pass: This name which has recently been given to this is a misnomer. It was formerly known as the & Henness Pass,” but through the conni(geveral of our early cotemporaries Mr. Héhness has contrived Bk, ng his name exclusively to this now celebrated ity. This pass was first discovered by Messrs. Jackson & Henness who were mining partners at Downieville. In May 1850 these tlemen set out on a prospecting e above le. passed on through Sierra Valley, and from thence turned their course westward, keeping to the right of the old Truckee route, until they noticed the remarkable depression, near what they subsequently found to be the head waters of the South Fork of the coger Map Pn through this which was subsequently cal e “Jackson & faces Pass,” they came to the spot now known as “Jackson's Ranch,” which at the “packed” to Downieville at 2 great profit. There was scarcely a whole of glass left in the east and west sides of the houses in Leroy, and in some instanees, window sashes were smastied. At Mr. Drickinson’s house, the balls effected a passage directly through the roof. But it is useless to attempt to enumerate the various accidents and incidents which resulted from this storm. We hear of horses, eattle and pigs being killed, men severely pummeled, but we are pleased to say, no loss of human life was oceasioned; at least we have heard of none. We are confident, however, that hada person been so exposed during the prevalence of the storm, as to receive some of those ice-balls upon his head, his life would have been imminently periled. A very strong wind was prevailing at the time, and houses, trees and fences, were scattered about in great profusion in many places. _ Sgecinl Potices.
