REESE ee “Mevada Democrat, . eae eS LOCAL MATTERS. Tae KANAKA Dance.—A goodly number of amusement seekers attended the ‘Theater yesterday evening to see the Kanaka girls dance, and it is generally conceded that the en tertainmert was the most extensive ‘‘sell’ of the season. The “girls” consisted of one rather ancient looking Hawaiian female, the other performers being masculines. The performance was about as entertaining as an ordinary Digger dance. While the company were performing at Grass Valley, on Thuesday evening, a number of eggs were thrown on the stage by disappointed auditors, which so frightened the “natives” that they refused to perform any more. The audience demanded their money back, but the matter was finally adjusted by the proprietor of the show treating the crowd. Fine at ORLEANS FLAtT.—A dwelling house occupied by a Mrs. Frizell, at Orleans Flat, was destroyed by fire last Wednesday evening. In less than two minutes from the time the alarm was given, sixty or seventy persons were on the ground, but they arrived too late to save anything. Mrs. Frizell was at a neighbor's house when the fire broke out, and barely had time to hurry home and get her two children out of the vurning building. The warehouse of Messrs, Briggs & Hogerty, containing eighteen or twenty thousand dollars worth of goods, was situated in the vicinity of the fire, but was fortunately saved. The damage by the fire was small—perhaps net to exceed four hundred dollars. We are indebted to Mr. Long, the expressman, for the above item. District Covrt—June 6th.—W. A. Sawyer vs. J. F. Clark. Judgment revived against defendant for $73,50. Ragsdale vs. Mullen.—Case tried, and reserved for argument. June 7th—Landes vs. Landes.—Decree of divorce granted. Middle Yuba Co. vs. Eureka Lake Co.—Judgme nt for plaintiffs for $22,415. Ragsdale vs. Mullen.—Argued and submitted, THEATER.—Mrs. W. H. Leighton and company are announced to give another performance at the Nevada Theater next Monday evening. ‘The pieces to be played are “Naval Engagements,” “Sketches in India,” and the “Yankee Duelist.” Mrs. Leighton appears in the two first pieces. The company will remain here only one evening, being announced to play at Dutch Flat on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Diev.—Mr. Benjamin Marr, who was taken with the small pox a week or two ago, at Blue Tent, died last night. He was supposed to be getting along well, and yesterday forenoon was out of his bed for the first time, but on one or two oceasions he appeared to be out of his right mind. During the night, the person taking care of him laid down and slept for an hour or two, and when he awoke the patient was dead. Exposep to SmaLy Pox.—We are informed that quite a number of Indians were attracted into Mrs. Coutad’s house yesterday afternoon, and of course were exposed to the small pox. Ifthe disease breaks out omong the Diggers it willbe very likely to kill off the few still remaining in this vicinity. UNIVBRSALIST SERVICE.—The requisite arrangements have been made for the Rev. Thos. Walton, the Universalist clergyman now located at Grass Valley, to preach in Nevada tomorrow. ‘The service will be held at the brick church, on Main street, commencing at three e’clock in the afternoon. ANNUAL MeeTING.—The annual meeting of the Nevada County Bible Society will be held at the brick church to-morrow (Sunday) evening, commencing at eight o'clock. Addresses will be delivered by Reverends Buell and Cummings. There will be no services at any other church at that hour. FineMEN’s Be_u.—A few days ago the Nevada Hose Co. received a large cast-steel fire bell, purchased at San Francisco. It was suspended in the company’s building to-day, and its clear, loud tones notified the people of the city that it was ready for duty. MupicaL.—Dr. Nelson J. Bird, a physician, recently from the East, has established himself at Red Dog, for the practice of his profession: Dr. B. is a graduate of Queen's Medical College, Kin , Canada, and brings. high testimonials of his skill as a physician and surgeon. To Correspondecnts.—Iatients residing in any part of the State, however distant, who may desire the opinion and advice of Dr. Young, on their respective cases, and who think proper to submit a written statement of such, in preference to holding a personal interview, are respectfully assured that their communications will be held most sacred. Dr. Young takes this opportunity of observing that all letters are only opened and replied to by himself, and the latter as promptly as possible, If the case be fully and candidly described, personal communications will be superceded, as instroctions for diet, regymen, snd the general treatment of the case itself, (including the remedies,) will be forwarded without delay, and in such a manner as to convey no idea of the purport of the letter or parcel so transmitted. 6H (flice, 751 Clay street, San Francisco, Consultation gratis.
