Aevada Democrat. LOCAL MATTERS, District Court.—The case of Smith and others against Johnson and others, involving the right to a ravine leading from Gopher Hill to the South Yuba, was tried in the District Court on Tuesday and Wednesday. The plaintiffs alleged that they had located the ravine as mining ground in 1858, while the defendants claimed it as an appendage to their mining claims on the Hill. The ravine is now valuable for a tail sluice, as the tailings from all the mining ground on Gopher Hill run through it. The jury found a general verdict for the plaintiffs, with a special right of way for the defendants to run their own tailings through the ravine. : The following orders were made to-day: Middle Yuba Canal Co. vs. Howland and others. —Continued for the term. Burns vs. Delaney.—By consent it was ordered that defendant have ten days to amend answer, and that the motion for dissolution of injunction be held under advisement until the amended answer is filed. Burton & McCarty vs. Stewart.—It appearing to the Court that defendant is insane, and has not answered, Thos. P. Hawley was appointed his attorney. In the case of Egbert & Co. vs. Stewart, the same order was made. Court adjourned till to-morrow atten o’clock, A. M. Court or Sessions.—In the case of Clara ‘Thompson, tried on Tuesday last for grand larceny, the jury found a verdict of ‘‘not guilty;” and the prisoner was discharged from custody. The case of Daniel Dooling, charged with an assault with intent to do great bodily harm, has been on trial to-day. The case will not be concluded until late this evening, or to-morrow. FATAL AccIDENT.—Mr. Wm. Quirk was killed near Red Dog, on Tuesday last, by the caving of a bank. It appears that he was abbut to start for Nevada, but concluded before leaving to go and take a look at his diggings, when the bank accidentally caved upon him. His body was not recovered until the next day. Mr. Quirk was about twenty-nine years of age, and formerly from Pennsylvania. He was buried to-day, at Red Dog, by the Odd Fellows, of which Order he was a member. New Goops.—Messrs. Kent & Mackay have just received an extensive stock of goods in their line, including a large assortment of picture frames of different styles and sizes, fine large and small mirrors, etc. Persons wishing anything in their line, woulddo well to give them a cail. ApsourRNED Sinz Dixe.—The Bachelor’s Club held a meeting to-day, and after passing resolutions of condolence, and singing the song ‘‘Willie we have Missed You,” adjourned sine die. CeLarir’s ENTERPRISE.—The drawing of the prizes in Mons. L. Celarie’s grand gift enterprise takes place on Saturday March 30th. . We call attention to his advertisement in an. other column. Washington correspondent of the Charleston Mercury has found out what is thought of South Carolina abroad. He says: A distinguished gentleman, just returned . from a long sojourn abroad, says that the duty of the Southern Confederacy is to pay no earth. 0 ly attention to the opinion of the forei ublic. ‘The South is universally despised at all the European Courts. Our among the lowest grades of hummauity, grossly ignorant and brutal, and addicted to lawless. ness and vice. This opinion, based upon the . slanders of the Northern press, will never be changed until we have relieved ourselves from dependency upon the Northern preved the contrary by the establishment of a vigorous and polis : i vy a brilliant feat of arms, We must first have our cause properly championed in a way to reach Europe, and inspire respect for our courage. There will be plenty of time to excite admiration for our culture. InpIAN Huno.—On the 5th inst., says the Shasta Courier, an Indian, known as To-anyo-la, was hung by some of the citizens about Dog Creek, in this county, after a fair and impartial trial, for the murder of one Larkins, in the fall of 1454. He was apprehended on infor. mation given by other Indians. He made a full confession of his guilt, and in mitigation of the crime, said he was induced to kill Larkins by other Indians, who gave hir giowing accounts of the amount of money, clothing, grub, ete., he would obtain by the murder. ople are regarded as . apers, and . literature; and, above all .
