Aevada Democrat. LOCAL MATTERS, Hangas Corpts.—The habeas corpus case of James Mooney was examined before Judge Belden yesterday forenoon, and resulted in his discharge. Mooney was arrested on the complaint of one Wagot, whom he had chased with a knife and threatened to kill. Justice Smith, who issued the warrant of arrest, after hearing the testimony, ordered Mooney to give bonds to keep the_ peace, andin default, committed him to jail. When brought before Judge Belden, on habeas corpus, there being some defect in the commitment, he summoned the prosecuting witness and re-examined the case. The prosecutor at first swore the case straight through, and the evidence was strong enough to holdthe prisoner in jail forever; but on beimg cross-examined, he admitted that there was no danger of Mooney hurting him unless he got drunk again, and he was rather of the opinion that Mooney would drink no more. On this evidence, the prisoner was set at liberty. Surrirr’s SALES.—The Journal, we notice, has been endeavoring to get a portion of the patronage of the Sheriff’s office, but it seems has not met with much success so far. We tried the same thing soon after the present Sheriff went into office, but gave it up when we learned the patronage had been sold to the Transcript. The Democrat has never been a favorite with county officials, and we shall always endeavor to de without the patronage that can only be procured by means of bribery and corruption. CoNGREGATIONAL Cucncu.—The gas fixtures have lately been put into this church, and the building was kghted up with gas for the first time yesterday evening. Services will now be held twice every Sabbath—at eleven o’clock in the forenoon, and at half-past seven in the evening. The Sabbath School meets at halfpast one in the afternoon, and prayer meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings. Frencu Tactics.--Y esterday evening Mons. Chauval put the Nevada Cadets through a course of drill, in accordance with the French tactics. We learn that the young men are rapidly improving, and under the instruction of so experienced a tactician as M. Chauval will soon vecome perfected in the company drill. THEATRICAL.—The well-known tragedian, McKean Buchanan, and his daughter Miss Virginia, are announced to appear at the Nevada Theater next Monday evening. They erform portions of the ee of Romeo and Juliet, Richard III and Hamlet. A Marcuep Doc Ficur has been made up between Taylor’s “Boxer” and Seth McCain’s “Shaker,” for $100 a side. It comes off at Jeffery’s Glenbrook Race Course, on Saturday next, at three o’clock Pp. M. In Town.—Rev. J. H. Warren, formerly pastor of the Congregational church, in this place, and at present editor of The Pacific, arrived in town yesterday, by way of Marysville. Going Home.—Mr. John Webber, of Rough & Ready, and an old resident of the county, is making preparations to return to his old home ia the Atlantic States. GARDEN SEEDs.—Every variety of garden seeds, grown in Nevada county, can ve obtained at the Commerciel Street Drug Store, next door below Welch’s Bookstore. NY SEI TL ERAS Laxity or DiscrpLine AT SAN QUENTIN, —A correspondent of the Solano Herald asserts that a great lack of discipline is observable at the State Prison—very few of the rules being observed or enforced. At night, in the large rooms which are improperly called cells, the different droves of prisoners were accustomed to set back their stools, etc., against the wall, mount a fiddler on a cask, forma uadrille set, and dance like Bacchanalian evils till ten o’clock or midnight, whooping, yelling, shouting and’ clapping their hands in a manner which would induce any idea but that they were convicts, Others sat upon the floor, engaged in the games of cards, dice and dominoes; while still others, of the soberer class, had books or newspapers, which they were intently reading skied the hubbub. Many sang songs, and at times the convicts were allowed to procure and peruse books of obscene character, but this practice has been abolished, greatly to the benefit of the institution. Such abuses as these deserve investigation. Corton Grow1NG In INpD1IA.—The advices from Madras, of the 27th ult., state that the Board of Commerce has informed the Government that the Egyptian cotton-seed, supplied by Mr. Shubrick, had been tried at Caddaph and other places, and the result was a failure. In Canjam the collector states that the produce could be raised all over the district with or without special care, although far greater yield might be expeeted from the plants that are carefully watered. The samples which have been forwarded were pronounced by the Chamver of Commerce, although discolored, to be Probably worth from 5d. to 7d. a pound in London.—{Morning Post. Tue Canadian military authorities xt Montreal advertised for 2, iron bedsteads for troops arriving, whereupon some speculators bought up all the iron in the market suitable for the purpose, and held it fora large advance. The War Department decided at once to substitute blankets for bedsteads, and the speculators “missed a figure.” Jas. Morpnuy was killed at Quartz Flat says the Auburn Herald, on the 13th inst., by the caving on him of his mining claim. He was 37 years old, and has a wife and family in Springfield, Mass. Special Notices. Episcopal Services will be held at the Court House every Sunday, at eleven o’clock, a. M., and three P.M. To Correspondents.—Patients residing in any pact of the State, however distant, who may desire the opinion and advice of Dr. Young, on their respective cases, and who think proper to submit a written statement of such, in preference to holding a personal interview, are respectfully assured that their communications will be held most sacred. Dr. Young takes this opportunity of observing that all letters are only opened and replied to by himself, and the . latter as promptly as possible. Ifthe case be fully and candidly described, personal communications will be superceded, as instructions for diet, regumen, and the general treatment of the case itself, (including the remedies.) will be forwarded without delay, and in such a manver as to convey no idea of the purport of the letter or parcel so transmitted, e@ Office, 751 Clay street, San Francisco, _ Consultation gratis.
