THE PARTING HOUR. * [The San Francisco Call says the following exquipite was written by the late Edward Pollock, the gifted California on the 6th of January, 1857, and has never before heen published.” Jt was given by the poet toa who was about to departon a steamer for Oregon, Pollock saying: ‘Take this, You may, Y pag g read and appreciate the sentiment long after I have ceased to be among the living’? :) “There's something in the ‘parting hour’ Will chill the warmest heart— Yet kindred, comrades, lovers, friends, Are fated all to part; But this ’ve seen—and many a pang Has pressed it on my mind— The one who goes is happier Than those he leaves behind. No matter what the journey be, Adventurous, dangerous, far, To the wild deep or bleak frontier, To solitude, or war— Still something cheers the heart that dares, In all of human kind, And they who go are happier Than those they leave behind, The bride goes to the bridegroom’s home With doubtings and with tears, But does not Hope her rainbow spread Across her cloudy fears? Alas! the mother who remains, What comfort can she find But this—the gone is happier Than one she leaves behind? Have you a friend—a comrade dear? ‘An old and valued friend! Be sure your term of sweet concourse At length will have an end! And when << part—as part you will— O, take it not unkind If he who goes is happier Than you he leaves behind! God wills it 4o— and so it is: The pilgrims on their way; Tho’ worn and weak, more cheerful are Than all the rest who stay. And when, at last, poor Man subdued, Lies down to death resigned, May he not still be happier far Than those he leaves behind?” Srrenaru and Heautu.—It is quite a sommon idea that health keeps pace with strength, Many persone really think that you may determine the comparative bealth of acompany of men by measuring their arms; that he whose arms measures twelve iuches is twice as healthy as he who méasures but six. This strange and thoughtless misapprehension has given rise to pearl all the mistakes thus far made in tue physical culture movements of this country, Some persons cao lift 900 pounds and yet habitually suffer from torpid liver, rheumatism, and low spirits, The cartmen of our cities, who are our strongest men, are far from the healthiest olass, ae physicians will testify, On the contrary, there are many that would stagger under 300 pounds that are in capital case. But we need not elabarate a matter so familiar with physiciaos and other observing people. No tests of bealth would prove more faulty than a tape line, or a lift at the scale beam. Suppose two brothers, twins, bank clerks, in bad health. They are measnred around the arms, Each marks exactly ten inches, They try the scale beam, The bar rises at exactly 300 pounds with each. Both seek health, John goes to the gymnasium, lifts heavy dumb-bells and kegs of nails, until be can put up 125 pounds, and lift 900 and bis arm reaches fifteen inches, Thomas goes to a mountain fishes, hunts and plays cricket. Upon measuring his arm we find it scarcely any larger than when he left town, while he can’t put up 60 pounds, nor lift 500. But who doubts Thomas wil! return to the bank counter the better man of the two? John should be the better man if strength is the poe or most essential condition of ealth! We do not by these remarks intend to ignore the benefits of physical _ strength, the culture of which is a good thing, and be who possesses it, in conjunction with health, is much to be envied. ~~ Tux Japanese Presents.—The Washington correspondent of the New York Journal of Commerce writes: The new Japanese pres just sent to the President of the United States from the Tycoon of Japan, are the finest that has ever been seen in thiscountry. A laquered box containing a letter thanking the President for the reception of his ambassadors, in most courtly phrase in characters as stately as those usually found upon the sides of a tea box, wrapped in the yellowest of yellow silk, with plenty of gilt. A sword of exquisite steel, with the handle bedded with large pearls and mounted in the finest = Blocks of crystal from the sacred uslyama Mountain of diamond clearness, Vases of antique bronze, exquisitely sculptured in relief with tortoises and stones of untold value, A punch bowl, fit for a Cyclops to “wet his whistle” in, so large that the President’s two sons curled up in itand the cover was put on; candlesticks some four feet high, gold mounted, with vases of every variety of pattern and shape, an entire suite of armor quite worthy of the middle ages. The people are anxiously waiting to have these things sent to some place, the Smithsonian or the Patent Office, where they can geta glimpse at those gems of crystal steel, bronze or porcelain. A whole dinner set, with hundreds of pieces of Japanese crape, silk and brocrade, forms part of this royal present. Deserters.—The Brownsville, Texas, Flag (rebel) says: “We are told that there are are about thirty deserters from the Confederate army in the camp of Caravajal, and that they are very well satisfied, They will regret their crime when it is too late.” Caravajal is the Mexican General in pospession of Matamoras on the Rio Grande. A Tetecuaruic Cante.—The following description of a newly invented eable for ocean telegraphing, may be perfectly intelligible to our readers: Wm. P. Piggott, of London, an eminent medical electrician, has invented a cable for ocean telegraphing the peculiarity of which is that, instead of requiring an enormous electric charge to be forced through the whole length of a line by powerful batteries, at each successive transmission of a signal, as at present, in « Jong sea and land routes, the wire contiuaes statically charged as it is Jaid, whilst the least disturbance of the equilibrium of this passive electric charge, imperative and influenced until called into action by the operator, answers through all its length to the slightest transmitted influence, aud s0 serves every practical purpore, Tuose only are fit for solitude who like nobody, are like nobody, and are liked by uobody.
