Bowie (he, the inventor of the knife,) resided, and carried on his daring and desperate exploits—not of rapine, but of rencounters, the like of which have never been equalled in the world’s history. By-the-by—speaking of Bowie—I will nar rate an annecdote of him, which was told me uF old Mons. They fleeced the boy out of all his cash and twenty-one negroes, ur Virginia friend seemed to be perfectly desperate—he was almost frantic at his losses —and in a moment of passion accused the gam blers of cheating. This they denied—but the denial bad scarcely passed their lips, before a stentorian voice cried out—" Thieves / you lie!’ In an instant all was confusion and uproar. The gamblers endeavored to make good their escape, but the strong arm of Bowie was against them—they recognized the fatal knife io his hand, and be compelled them to disgorge their ill-gotten gains. Thisisa true type of the much maligned Col. Bowie. : The closing scene of the life of this strange and daring man, says the Delta, is in keepin with that of his early history. He met death on a sick bed, in the little room of the Alamo, weapon in hand and pluck to the last. The small, gloomy and thick-walled apartment, one of the strong defences of the old mission of tho Alamo, where Travis, Bowie and Crockett died, overwhelmed, but not subdued by the soldiers of Santa Anna, was three years since, an object of much curiosity to visitors in San Antoniu, as well as a glorious memento of the past to the survivors of the independence struggle in Texas. Itwas at that time ina state of preservation, grim, blackened and perforated with cannon balls. On the walls were numerous autographs recalling the history of two week’s gallant de Ulcers, Dyspepsia, Lumbago, White Swellings, Hip Disease, Enlargement of the Bones and Joints, Fever Sores, Bronchitis, Erysipelas, Salt Rheum, Loss of Appetite, Pimples, Biles, General Debility, FOR INFLAMED EYELIDS. defendant, once a week successively for three months.
