eval Democrat. LOCAL MATTERS. Surrirr’s PATRONAGE.—The Sheriff called on us yesterday, and requested us to taks back the intimation conveyed in a paragraph in our last of “bribery and corruption” in the publication of Sheriff’s sales, and give the facts. We are perfectly willing to give the facts, and leave the public to judge as to the terms by which the transaction should be designated. As we understand it, the Sheriff made a contract with the Transcript to publish all the sales in that paper, for a certain percentage of the amount paid for advertising, or else is to have a stipulated sum for each sale published. The Sheriff considers this a fair business transaction, but we do not think outsiders will so regard it. In speaking of “bribery and corruption” in our last, we had no intention of designating this transaction as such, and therefore take back any intimation of the kind that may have been gathered from the words used. It would probably come under that clause of the statute relating to extortion in office. A similar proposition wagonce made to a former Sheriff of this county, which he refused to entertain, regarding it as equivalent to bribery. District Court—March 24.—Funk vs. Sackett—Judgment for plaintiff by default. Mulford vs. Hagardon & Bowley—Hill & Hupp substituted as attorneys for Hagadorn, in place of Garber. E Ransom vs. M. Ransom—Plaintiff granted leave to withdraw private letters. Woodworth vs. Knowlton—V erdict forplaintiff. March 25th.—Mulford vs. Hagadorn & Bowley—Motion to dismiss attachment argued and submitted, with leave to file briefs till Monday next. Ismert vs. Bisbee et al.—Defendants granted ten days to file statement on motion for new trial. In the several attachment suits against Hagadorn & Bowley, defendants were given till Monday next to file answers, DeatH FROM INJURI¥S.—A man named Alexander Webster, who has been employed for a year or more at the Nevada hospital, died in the hospital at Marysville, last Wednesday, from the effects of injuries received in a drunken brawl in this place, about the first of March. He quit the hospital the first of this month, Dr. Hunt paying him between $300 and $400 for his services. That night he got to drinking in a saloon kept by Armstrong, on Broad street, and was badly beaten about the head by some of his drunken companions. He left the next morning for Marysville, having just enough money to pay his passage. After he got there, it seems he went into the hospital, where he died. Ronpery.—Mr. Hitchcock, a milkman, living out near Sugar Loaf, while going home, between nine and ten o'clock, Saturday evening, was stopped near the Catholic church, by a couple of highwaymen, and relieved of thirty or forty dollars. He was brought to a halt by a pistol presented to his face, which he instantly caught, and thought he had the better of the robber, but was soon disabused of this idea by the muzzle of another pistol, when he thought it prudent to give up his money without further resistance. Tax SaLz.—The sale of property for city taxes took place on Saturday. Quite a number of the delinquents paid up at the last moment, leaving only twenty-five or thirty whose property was offered for sale. Some five or six town lots were bought by individuals, probably for the purpose of getting a title, and the remainder o¢ the property offered was bid off by an agent of the city for taxes. The most of the latter will doubtless be redeemed. Rep Doo Staces.—The stages of the Pioneer Line, between Nevada and Red Dog, will hereafter make daily trips. The stage will start from the office of California Stage Co., at the National Exchange, at one o'clock every afternoon, Serious Arrray.—A serious affray occurred at Remington Hail, on Sunday last, between two men whose names we have not learned. One of them struck the other on the head with a pick, inflicting a serious wound. In Town —Mr. D. W. Ridley, of Company I, 4th Regiment California Volunteers, arrived in town yesterday eweniag, having got a few days leave of absence. Inptaw Huxo.—The Calaveras Chronicle says; The Indian who murdered young Munroe, last week, at San Antonio, was brought in by some of his tribeto Murphy's Camp, on Wednesday, the 12th inst. The people threw & rope over his head and dragged kim by the heck, from the Justice’s office where he had been placed, some half a mile out of town, and there hung him on a tree. His father stated that he was the one who killed the constable at ha Plana, and that he murdered, already, five men, although he was only about 21 years of age at the time of his death. This Indian Was a great villain, and has met at the hands of tbe people, a merited reward for his crimes. Unless criminals are punished by the laws of land, according to their deserts, there is no safety for honest men, save in the justice of lynch law. To Correspondents.—Patients residing in any part of the State, however distant, who may desire the opinion and advice of Dr. Young, on their respective cases, and who think proper to submit a written statement of such, in preference to holding a personal interview, are respectfully assured that their communications will be held most sacred. Dr. Young takes this opportunity of observing that all letters . _ . is large, comprising every variety and size, are only opened and replied to by himself, and the latter as promptly as possible.
