And streams Long years ago, w And many 4s wher nel Det fhnos But not a better, fairer spot Thao that gear, cherished one—gur home. gay and sunny France iPpassing rich awards? ure treads the giddy dance hion throngs the Boulevards; Her vine clad hills are fair to view, And well may tempt the heart to stray, ‘Where smiling skies and beauty"s eye Shed lustre over the wanderer’s way. Go ye where tower the Alpine heights, In solemn silence grey and grand, And frozen seas from gorges wild, Look Gown upon a fertile land. Where Venice piled her marble walls— Queen of the Adriatic lsles— And from deserted palace halla Admire where art and nature smiles, 4o, where the seven-hilled city rears t ruins old and hoary, And king bust and canvass tell Her wealth of art-—her all of glory. ‘Go stand on ancient Marathon, Gojmuse where Leuctra’s hosts are laid, Go wander in Arcadian bowers, ‘Or dream in Delphi's classic shade. Then tell me if thine eyes have met, In all this broad expanse of earth, A better fairer land than that Which gave thy patriot fathers birth; And when at last thy wayward bark Bounds hitherward o’er ocean’s toam, Doth not thy pulses proudly beat To own this cherished spot thy home, be vere AN Important Dicision.—Rev. W. McMahon, a venerable Methodist minister, is writing reminiscences of bis early life. H¢ founded the first Methodist church in Huntsville, Alabama, The scene of the following ‘anecdote is somewhere in that section of the State: i bad preached this year to a hardened congregation of wealthy siuners, where there was no society; aud I suppose that they thought themselves “free from the déad,”’ so far as pay was concerned. When 1 was ab erie my jast sermon to them, I remarked that I bad been preaching to them for some time the best I could, and that if I had not preached as well as others I had preached as cheap a gospel as any other man ever did; that, for all my labor among them, I had not received as much as would wrap my little finger with crocus. As I was taking my leave of them, there was some feeling manifested, when a large, fat old man came up to the pulpit, blubbering and wiping his eyes, be said: “God bless you, sir; if we don’t pay you, the Lord will. “IT understand,”’ said I, “that the Lord is very good for his own contract, but I never heard that he was-bound to pay your debts,”’ Buackstone vs. Crivoiine.—The most notable occurrence in Placerville of late, was a foot race by a lawyer and school teacher. They are politicians, the one a vivacious Democrat, and the other “DougJas.’’ She doesa’t hesitate in expressing and defending the principles whieh the Democratic party announced with the nomination of Breckinridge ; he carefully affirms that Douglas was right ;’’ she is rapid and defiant; he is slow and cautious ; he was never Kuown to get outofa melancholy walk; she canrun “like lightning.” Theyjmet on Main street early in the moroing ; they taunted each other with ‘political proclivities;’’ he said Breckinridge dida’t run much in the Presidential canvas; she said Douglas didu’t run at all; “but I'll tell you what,” said she “I can out ran you!’ “No you can’t,” said he, feeling @ little excited and quite fresh, aud perceiving that it was not time for the multitude to be in the street. “Well, come on, let’s try,” said she; “all right,’’ suid he, and the postmaster, who was nigh, went to stand at the mark at the out come, After a little fussing and commands of “aow, you wait,’’ the racers started. Ob, sucha run as that was! It was over very quick, and the postmaster says she went like a cloud harry-birds, and flew about forty yards peer of her competitor.—[Mouatain Democrat, poor critters ’ Wantkp Common Sense.--An Irishman out West, conceiving that a little powder throwa upon some green wood would facilitate its burning, directed a small stream from @ keg upon the smoking pile ; but not possessing a haud sufficiently quick to cat it off at the desirable moment, was blown intoa million pieces. The coroner for the occasion reasoned out this verdict, “It can’t be called suicide, bekase he didn’t mean to kill himself; it wasn’t visitation of God, bekase he wasn’t strack by lightnin ; he didn’t die for want of breath, for he hado’t anything left to breathe with ; it’s plain he didn’t Know what he was about ; so I shall bring in, died for want of common sense. Fort Moyrox.—This Fort, which is intended to defend Norfolk, Virginia, is the largest in the connie. The walls are more than a mile ia circuit, very thick and high, surrounded by a moat which is from fifty to one hundred feet wide, with eight feet of water, draw-bridges and outer batteries, It mounts some three hundred heavy guns, has mortars for wr tte aga rnaces ‘for heating balls, etc, walls enclose __In the centre is od are .
