Drstnict Cournt.—The case of McDaniel vs. Stidger was given to the jury at four o’clock on Tuesday evening, and after consulting for an hour or two, they brought in a verdict for plaintiff, for the sum of $2,300, The defendant, we understand, .intends to move for a new trial, and in case that is denied, to appeal. F, Rowell. The Jury are still engaged in their labors, having six murder cases to investigate Tux Bopy Founp.—The search for the body of Richard Bell, who was drowned on Monday evening by falling from the timbers of Broad street bridge, was continued until late Tuesday evening without effect. The search was resumed on Wednesday morning, and between uine and ten o’clock the body was found near the Gold Tunnel quartz mill, having been earried about half a mile down the creek. Cocnty ASSESSMENT.—Mr. McKee, the County Assessor, has made arrangements to commence his official duties on Monday next, He will be assisted by one deputy, anda deputy collector will accon.pany each to collect the operty. Nevada and Bridgeae ulmahge Frill be oenueend first. ' Bustnvss CHANGE-Mr. Geo, E. Turner, having purchased the interest of his partner, Mr. Tallman, in the hardware store, on Commercial street, will continue the business on his own account. Mr. Tallman, we understand, intends to remove with his family to Ione Valley, where he has purchased a ranch, Express Cu ance.—Mr. Durgan, who for some months has beem running an express from Nevada to Dutch Plat, by way of Hunt's Hill, Red Dog and Little York, has sold out the route to Mr. E.B. Hopkinson. Mr. H. will continue the business as heretofore, making the trips three times a week. THEATRICAL.—Messrs. Dillon and Thorne, accompanied by their talented theatrical troupe, ‘lately playing at Marysville, arrived in town this afternoon, and will make their first appearance at the Theater this evening, according to advertisement. Corkrection.—In an advertisement of J. M. Hixson & Bro., in our last, it was stated that they “generally can and wi!l sell as cheap as any house in town,” This was an error. They wish to have it understood that they always can and will sell as cheap as others. Rain.—A drizzling rain set in about one o'clock yesterday afternoon, and continued stea. dily until dark. During the night it rained at intervals, but this morning the sun came out bright and clear, and to-day has been pleasant, though rather too cool for comfort. Crry MansHat.—Mr. W. H. Davidson, and Mr. Geo. 8. Pierce, are announced as candidates for city Marshal, at the next election. NATURALIZED.—A, Lowenberg, a native of Prussia, was admitted to citizenship, in the District Court, this morning. Derences or New York Harnor.—The Fort at Sandy Hook was commenced recently, by the construction of buildings required in the prosecution of operations, and by grading and planking roads leading from the wharf to the site of the fort. The works during the last few months have progressed with great rapidity, anditis now in condition to mount a large number of guns. It commands the channel of the entrance to the lower bay, and the entire anchorage around. A hostile fleet approaching New York harbor by the Narrows, would first have to encounter the fire of the battery at Sandy Hook, some ofthe guns of which, with a slight elevation, sent, by recent experiment, a hundred pound shot a distance of two miles before striking the water. After passing this point the fleet will come within the range of fifty of the guns of Fort Richmond and Fort Hamilton in the first stage of progress, and as it is advances the number of guns increases, until the fleet will receive fire of 215 guns. Should it pass these without being disabled, it still has to encounter the batteries of Governor’s Island and Fort Wood on Bedloe’s Island. Sma. Pox tn SAN FRANCISCO.—The Bay correspondent of the Stockton Independent says: The small pox is rapidly spreading over this city, notwithstanding the pains taken to check it. The local press say but little about it, but I have been informed that the disease is by no means confined to the hospitals, having several weeks ago got out among the poorer families, and it is now raging in several parts of the city, Sttver Ore.—A vein of silver-bearing quartz has recently been discovered near the town of El Dorado in Calaveras county. It has been tested and is feund to yield a paying per cent. of silver, Geo. F.Witsonx, found guilty of man‘laughter in San Framcis, having killed his wife, has been sentenced to the State Prison for five years, ‘ Exp or vas Wortp.— A clergyman _in Boston pean’ tetensia Eve, on “ The End of the World about 1864-68, ” rr * A Eptscopal Services will be held at the Court House every Sunday, at eleven o’clock, 4. M., and three P. mu. To Correspondents.—Patients residing in any part of the State, however distant, who may desire the opinion and advice of Dr. Young, on their respective cases, and who think proper to submit a written statement of such, in preference to holding a personal interview, are respectfully assured that their communications will be held most sacred, Dr. Young takes this opportunity of observing that all letters are only opened and replied to by himself, and the latter as promptly as possible. If the case be fully and candidly dexcribed, personal communications will be superceded, as instructions for diet, regimen, and the general treatment of the case itself, (including the remedies.) will be forwarded without delay, and in such a manner as to convey no idea of the purport of the letter or parcel so transmitted. @@ Office, 751 Clay street, San Francisco, Consultation gratis.
