NEVADA DEMOCRAT. ~ Howicrpe.—A fatal shooting affray occarred at Columbia Hill, in Bloomfield township, last Sunday evening. It appears that Thomas Richardson bad bad some difficulty with John West and others about some mining claims. About five o’clock on Sunday evening, West, who was somewhat intoxicated, went to Richardson’s cabin and commenced abusing him. Richardson put West ont of the cabin and told him to leave ; he also told some other men who were standing near, that if they were friends of West to take him off, as he wished to have no difficulty. No one interfered however, and West got an ax and went up to the cabin window near which Richardson was standing, but which he left as soon as West came up. West then went to the door and commenced breaking it in with the ax, upon which Richardson opened the window and fired at him with a pistol, the ball taking effect in his left breast. West turned and walked back a few steps, raying “I’m a goner,”’ and fell dead. An inquest was held on the body the next day, and the jury found a verdict that West came to his death “‘by a pistol shot, fired at him by Thomas Richardsonin self-defense.’’ Richardson came to Nevada the same evening, gave himself into custody of the Sheriff, and was committed to jail. The case will be examined before Justice Anderson as soon as the witnesses can be proeured. Court or Srssions ann County Court.—A bill bas passed the Legislature, and become a law, changing the time for holding the Court of Sessions and County Court of Nevada county. By this act, the Court of Sessions willbe held on the first Mondays of January, March, May, July, September and November. The County Court will be held on the first Mondays of February, April, June, August, October, and December. Last Monday was the day when the County Court would have been held under the old law, but by the new law is the day fixed for the meeting of the Court of Sessions. It was known that the act bad been passed, but a certified copy had not been received; and under the circumstances, the County Judge thought it would not be proper to open either Court. This is much to be regretted, as there is some important business to come before the Court of Sessions which must now go over until May, unless a special term is held. Manpames.—A mandamus was issued by the District Court, on Monday last, ordering the County Auditor to issue County warrants to the amount of $1,200, to Chas. Justice, as assignee of an order for that amount from Chas. H. Shaw, and J. R. Hardenburg, upon the contract for building the Court House. When the Supervisors settled with Shaw for building the Court House, an order was entered on the minutes of the Board, by which the sum of $1,200 was to be paid him in case no suits were commenced against the county upon the contract. We believe a evit was commenced against the county, by E. Houston, a sub-contractor under Shaw; but judgment in that case was recovered by the county. This, however, was before the final settlement with Shaw. A hearing in the case will be had on Saturday next at 10 o’cloek in the forenoon. Moore Sunootixe.—About two hours after West was shot at Columbia Hill, two men named Brookshaw and John W. Childers were discussing the matter ina saloon. Hard words were used, when Childers struck Brookshaw, upon which the latter drew a pistol and fired at Childers. The ball took effect in his left side, glanced around the ribs, and came out at the back without inflicting a dangerous wound. Brookshaw was immedistely arrested, but we bave not heard the result of his examinations The whole affair is directly traceable to the amount and quality of the “fighting whiskey” uged at Columbia Hill. TuraTricaL.—Yankee Addams and troupe continued their performances at this place during last week. Miss Belle Divine received a very substantial benefit on Friday evening, but with the exception of that occasion the entertainments were poorly attended. The company played at Red Dog on Monday evening, from whence they proceeded to Dutch Flat. We understand they purpose returning, and will play again at Red Dog on Thursday eveaing, at Grass Valley on Friday, and will appear again at Nevada on Saturday evening. Froze ur.—A gentleman from Washington township informs us that mining operations have been almost entirely suspended in that section. The ditches are filled with snow and froze solid, so that water cannot be obtained. And even if water could be had the weather is too cold to work to advantage. A warm rain, or a few days of pleasant weather, would thaw out the ditches and afford an abundant supply of water. A Sroruy Nicur.—The severest storm of the season oceurred ,last Thursday night. The rain fell in torrents from an early hour in the evening until near daylight the next morning— the wind blowing a gale during the whole night. About eight inches of snow fell at Skillman’s mill during the same night. Freeman & Co’s. Express.—The office of this Express company was opened last week, at the jewelry store of C. W. Young, on Main street. Mr. H. Mackie, the agent at Nevada is a thorough business man, and has had much experience in the express business. We are indebted to him for State exchanges furnished during the past week. Suppen Deatu.—Anthony Bray, a native of England, died suddenly at the county hospital one day last week. He was eating his breakfast, and while in the act of lifting s cup of coffee to his mouth he fell back dead. He had been in the hospital about three months, and was suffering from a disease of the lungs. Tur Youne Awerica Co., who are running & tunnel into the hill near the claims of the Live Oak Company, wasbed out, on Friday and Saturday, some five hundred dollars, from dirt taken out of the tunnel, They have not yet got to the main lead. Sxow.—Last Sunday night the snow fell to the depth of a foot, at Lowell Hill, in Little York township. It is now about ten feet deep, on the level, in that section. Tue Lanp Stipe at Burna Vista.—Last week we briefly alluded toa tremendous land slide which occurred near Buena Vista Ranch on Saturday, Feb, 26th. At that time there was no communication between Nevada and Buena Vista, except by way of Grass Valley, and we were not able to get any reliable information in regard to the matter. At first many believed the story to be a hoax. The place where the slide occurred is about a mile and a half this side of the Buena Vista ranch. A correspondent of the Grass Valley National sives the following account of the scene: McCullen & Co. have been ground sluicing at a hill in this vicinity, lately christened Mount Cullen, On Saturday morning last they turned on their water as usual, when the whole bill commenced sliding in, and rushing in a turbid stream down Indian Ravine, driving the miners out of it, giving them no time to collect their tools, and nearly destroying Taylor’s ranch. This stream continued to flow all day Saturda and until late Sunday evening. It then stopped; but the chances are that the moment work is commenced that the bill will again take another start. The whole country is buried to the depth of from two to twenty feet for a distance of two miles and a breadth of fifty yards. No lives were lost, but one man had some difficulty in getting on to solid ground, being imprisoned on alog until by the turning of the stream those standing ou the bank of the ravine were enabled by running out a pole to render him assistance. Tae damage done is about $6,000; the greater part is sustained by Mr. Taylor, who estimates his lors at $5,000. The formation of the hill isa layer of gravel under pipe clay, and above this clay isa strata of quicksand, It was this eand that gave way, bein undermined by the water, with which this hill seems to be filled. LeatsLative Baut.—We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to the Legislative ball, which took place at Sacramento, on Friday evening last. Sorry we ecouldn’t attend, Episcopal Service. Rev. M. Smeathman, will preach at the Court House every Sunday at 3 o'clock P, M. ST. PATRICKS BALL. HE IRISHMEN OF NEVADA, WILL celebrate the anniversary of the PATRON SAINT OF IRELAND, with a BALL and SUPPER, the Ball to be held at the COURT HOUSE, and the Supper at the NEW YORK HOTEL, on THURSDAY EVENING, MARCM 17th, All are respectfully invited to attend, MANAGERS.
