Of late years, in what is called “‘respecable” society "in England, a crime has gradually lacreased #0 much that philoso_phy has had to invent a name for it. The word kleptomania is not to be found in Bailey nor Jobnson, neither in Webster nor Worcester. The word indicates a feminine desire for thieving, and bas become necessary from the increase of the crime. Neither the word nor the action has yet been naturalized here, und we bave no ambition to have them adopted. The late Mr. Hamlet, an eminent London jeweler, (the Mr. Polonius of Thackeray’s early stories,) used to lose @ great deal every year by the depredatious of ladies of Tank Tod feetenb, who could not resist the temptation of plundering, when the oppcrtunity occurred. At last he devised an innious expedient for preventing such loss afatare, Detecting a lady of very exalted raok in the act of conveying a valuable dracelet from his possession to her own, he politely invited her into the counting house where, in the presence of the clerk who bad watebed the theft, he ebarged her with it, and met with a most indignant denial, The threat of calling in a policeman made the lady change her note, and déliveriug up the bracelet, which she alleged to have got into her muff by accident, she offered to pay for it, ‘The bill was made out, and the amount was several buadred pounds, The lady remonstrated and declined to pay. The jeweler refused to make any abatement and finally sent for the husband, who hap. pened to be an earl who occupied a bigh position as leader of apolitical party. To him Mr. Hamlet stated what bad occurred, cand said that he had been compelled to make a rule to charge the person ‘he detec ted with all that had been stolen from the shop since the Jast similar settlement of snch an account. The ear! paid the money and his light-fingered countess was then permitted to retire. We see by our last London papers, that a fortnight ago, at Middlesex, two young ladies, who gave feigned names, and were reported to be wealthy, highly educated, and well connected, had pleaded “Guilty” to the charge of stealing books from a shop. The judge, who considered that their position should have taught them better conduct, sentenced them to imprisonment with ‘hard labor for nine months. It must be confessed that, across the water, punishment is fairly dealt out to the ‘guilty without respect to position or fortune, A few more such sentences, rigidly carried out, (and the pardoning power is ‘rarely exeacised there,) would put an end to Kleptomania.—[Philadelpbia Press. The Language of Animals. Professor Agassiz, in one of his interest. ing pa rs on Natural History, in the At‘lantio Monthly, remarks: The voices of animals have a family character not to be mistaken. All the canidw ‘bark and howl; the fox, the wolf, the dog, have the same kind of utterance, though on a somewhat different pitch. All the bears growl, from the white bear ef the Arctic snows to the small black bear of the Andes, All the cats miau, from our quiet fireside companion to the lions and tigers and panthers of the forest and jungle. This last may seem a strange assertion, ‘ut to any one who has listenen critically to their sounds and analyzed their voices, the roar of the lion is but a gigantic miau, bearing about the same proportion to that of acat as its stately and majestic form does to the smaller, softer, more peacefol aspect of the cat. Yet, notwithstanding the difference in their size, who can look at the lion, whether in bis more sleepy mood as he lies curled up in the corner of his cage, or in his fiercer moments of bunger or of rage, without being reminded of the eat? And this is not merely the resemblance of one carniverous animal to another, for no one was ever reminded of a dog or wolf by a lion. Again, all the horses and donkeys neigh; for the bray of the donkey is only a harsher neigh, pitched ona different key, it is true, bat a sound of the same character— as the donkey himself is but a clumsy and dwarfish horse. All the cows low, from the buffalo roaming the prairie, the musk-ox of the Arctic ice-fields, or the jack of Asia, to the cattle feeding in our pastures. Among the birds this similarity of voice in families is still more marked. We need only recall the harsh and noisy parrots, so similar in their peculiar utterance. Or take as an example the web footed <a not all the geese and the innumerable host of ducks quack? Does not every member of the crow family caw, whether it be the jackdaw, the jay, the magpie, the rook in some green rookery of the Old World, or the crow of our woods, with its long, melancholy caw that seems to makv the silence and solitude deeper. Prince, ScuwarrzenserG, who has the finest palace in the beautiful environs of Vienna, has just given a grand ball in favor of the sufferers by the inundation. The tickets, eight bundred in number, and which will produce eighty thousand florins, are distributed by a committee of fifteen ladies of the highest rank, Any respectable persone, paying one hundred florins for the ticket, will be admitted. The supper and _— will be at the expense of the rince, ee WueN the piratical steamer Nashville arrived at the Port of St. George’s, Bermada, she found several American vessels lying there, the crews of which made an attack upon the Nashville, upon which her valiant commander begged the protection of the Admiral, who seat a gunboat to guard her . till she left. Reser, Loss at Pea Rivce.—The fact, that Major Clarke, rebel commander at Fort Smith, issued on the 9th ultimo an order, for General McCulloch’s faneral, commencing. “The brave General McCulloch is no longer on earth. He fell while bravely fighting at the head of his ‘divisions, in a hardly-contested battle with the enemy near Cross Hollows on the 7th instant,’”’ is conclusive as to him. And a rebel letter from Fort Smith, dated Tuesday, March 11, says: When it became known to the troops that General McCulloch was killed, they were frantic with rage, and his command fought like demon;, charging at times and putting to flight five times their number, Geueral McIntosh fell at the bead of bis command early in the action; also, General Herber. General Price received a flesh wound in the arm the first day of the fight. Gea. Slack of the Missouri, received a mortal wound. There were a great many officers of lower grades killed and wounded, and it will be several days yet before an exact list of the killed aad wounded can be got at. Our loss in round numbers is estimared at 2,000 killed and wounded. Our train is now at Stickers, on Boston Mountain, out of reach ol the enemy, and will be up soon, LES TALE EE EL ERA TE IEEE SRS I EGE LTTE SIE Miscellaneous WHEELER & WILSON’S NEW STYLE IMPROVED SEWING MACHINE, FOR FAMILY USE, ALL FORMER OBJECTIONS BEING OVERCOME NO LEATHER PAD Used New on the New Style ef Machine! * The New Styie of Hemmer AND TRANSPARENT CLOTH PRESSER, ARE ATTACHED Te the Improved Machine. M. to3P. ™, DR. YOUNG addresses those who are suffering under the affliction of private disease, whether arising from impure connection or the terrible vice of self abuse. Devoting his entire time to that particular branch of the medicai profession, he feels warranted in GUARANTEEING A CURE IN ALL CASES, whether of long standing or recently contracted, entirely removing the dregs of disease from the system, and making a perfect and PERMANENT CURE. He would call the attention of the afflicted to the fact of his long standing and well earned reputation, furnishing sufficient assurance of his skill and success. Upwards of five thousand cases have been discharged cured in the year ending July Ist, 1860, showing a record surpassing any hospitalin the United States. ConsuLtaTion, by letter or otherwise, Free. Caution to the Public. Every intelligent and thinking person must know that remedies handed out for general use should have their efficacy established by well tested experience in the hands of a regularly educated physician, whose preparatory study fits him for adl the duties he must fulfill; yet the country is flooded with poor nostrums ami cure-all, purporting to be the best in the world, which are not only useless, but always injurious. The unfortunate should be parTICULAR in selecting his physician, as it is a lamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic patients are made miserable with ruined constitutions by mal-treatment froin inexperienced physicians in general practice; for it is a point generally conceded by the best syphilographers, that the study and manLegal Notices, ECLARATION OF SOLE TRADER. More caution, however, should be used by thesyph. ilitic patient, in cousulting nominal physicians of the advertising class, as nine-tenths of them are im. posters, who assume German, French, other names, and are without any claims to medical knowl. edge. These knavish rascals infest all large cities, and, by means of their lying advertisements and pos. ters, they induce the unwary to enter their Peter . This terrible disease is alarmingly on the increase in this country, and should be attended to in season for there is no complaint more dangerous, and attended with more suffering than this fatal disease, Any person who has been troubled with venereal, seminal weakness, or any other private disease, should watch very closely for this trouble, Its first pb sero is generally an unpleasant sensation in . the parts, sometimes of a tickling nature, an uneas. iness of the mind, an undefined dread of something you know not what, and if not attended to the urine becomes affected, and then follow all those dreadful symptoms which so often result in a miserable and disgusting death.
