NEVADA DEMOCRAT. Discuancep.—A man named Coffin was arrested Some} weeks ‘ago in Yuba county, on a charge of robbing sluices near Emory’s Crossing. Asthe robbery was committed in this county, the Justice sent Coffin to Nevada for trial; here he waived the preliminary examination and consented to await the action of the Grand Jury. The Court of Sessions, however, having adjourméd over until the 27th, Coffin got out a writ of habeas corpus, and as his commitment was voluntary he would, of course, have been entitled to his discharge. The District Attorney immediately lodged a complaint against him, had him arrested on a warrant issued by Justice Anderson, and the witnesses knowing to the facts were summoned to attend the examination, which was to have been held before Justice. Smith on Thursday. Two of the witnesses attended, but the parties who lost the gold, and whose evidence was absolutely necessary to establish the fact of the robbery, failed to appear, and the prisoner was consequently discharged. Had the witnesses appeared, there is not much doubt that sufficient evidence could have been procured to warrant the magistrate in holding the accused to answer for the robbery; but we are informed by those having a full knowledge of the facts that the evidence against him is entirely circumstantial, and not of such a character as would justify a jury in convicting him. The residents of Emory’s Crossing have no doubt of his guilt. Couxty Coxventiox.—The Democratic Central Committee for Nevada eounty, met at this place on Saturday, and transacted the business preliminary to the calling of the County Convention, The members of the Committee were nearly all present, and the utmost barmony ptevailed during their deliberations. The gentlemen from the different sections of the county express the utmost confidence that their respective districts will give an increased Democratic vote in September next, and all are sanguine of success. By the proceedings of the Committee, which will be found in another column, it will be seen that the County Conven tion is called for the first day of June. and the primary elections are to be held on Saturday, the 28th inst, Burerary.—About three o’clock last Monday morning, a burglar broke into a bakery on Broad street, adjoining the El Dorado Saloon. The inmates of the house heard him walking about the rooms, and succeeded in taking him a prisoner. The fellow represented that he had been drinking during the night, and was trying to find a place to sleep. He told such a reasonable story that he was suffered to depart. The next morning, however. his boots and an ax were found at the back door of the building. He had evidently pulled off his boots to enable himto walk about the house without being heard. and the ax had been used to pry open the door, Faran Accipest.— Mr. Thos tive of Waterford connty, Ireland, was accidentally killed at Moore’s Flat, last Saturday morning. .The tunne) in the claims where he was at work had become choked up, and be went in to clear it out. He had scarcely commenced his work when the earth with which the tunnel was choked gave way, and the water rushed ont with euch force as to carry him out of the tuunel, landing him in a canon some distance below, and killing him instantly. Mr. Killgrove hag resided in this county several years, was an industrious and enterprising young man and much respected by his acquaintances and friends, Killgrove, ana TurarricaL.—Misses Emma and Ada Webb are announced to appear at the Nevada Theater to-night and to-morrow night. The Webb sisters are pleasing young actresses, and being supported by a good stock company, cannot fail to entertain the theater-going public. On their first appearance at Nevada they were received with much favor, and we have no doubt they will again attract good housee. We learn from their agent that they design giving one or {wo entertainments at Grass Valley during the latter part of the week. May Day Cevesration.—The Sanday School children of Nevada held their May Day festival on Friday last. The place selected for the festivities was near the west gap of the Sugar Loaf, on the sunny side of the hill, but unfortunately the eun was obscured most of the time, and the day was uncomfortably cool. Not belag present, we are unable to state what occurred on the ground, but we are told that the young folk enjoyed themselves as they always will on such occasions, and every thing passed off pleasantly. Quartz Mit.—The quartz mill of Messrs. Anderson and others, erected on Deer creek, near the Oriental Mill, has been completed and was running last week. The engine was built at the foundry near Grass Valley, and we learn that the machinery works to perfection, The mill was erected tocrush the rock from the Deadwood Lead, and from the known richness of that ledge, we bave no doubt the proprietors will do a good business. Accounts ALLoweD.—The acconnts agaist the county, audited by the Board of Supervisors at their late session, amounted to $6,829 02, on the following funds : General fund $3.035 22 Special fund 1,620 20 Road fund 400 00 Indigent sick fund 1,773 60 Total $6,829 02 Accrpent.—Daring the May Day celebration, on Friday last, a carriage containing three or four persons was accidentally upset. Miss Black, one of the occupants of the carriage, fell on her face, cutting a severe gash on the chin and loosening several teeth. The others eseaped without injary. Aruaxtic Parers.—J. W.
