“NEVADA DEMOCRAT.
WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 12, 185
L@CAL INTELLIGENCE.
MELANCHOLY Accipent—Mr. Joseph S. Harrison, an old and much respected citizen of Nevada, wes instantly killed at his residence near .
the head of Broad street last Friday afternoon.
He was engaged in raising his house to the
grade of the street, and had employed a couple
of meehanics to assist him. They had nearly
completed the job, and were endeavoring to
levél the house when the accident occurred.
The building is situated on a hill-side, the rear)
being some ten feet and the front about a foot
from the ground. Mr. Harrison was lying un.
der the front part of the house, turning one of .
the screws, when some of the blocking in the
rear gave way, and building slid back four or .
five feetand dropped to the ground; the deceased was lying ia such a position that his .
head eame between a rock and one of the sills, .
and was completely crushed by the weight of
the structure. The back part of the house then .
settled to the ground, raising the front, so that .
the body was left clear. Mrs. Harrison was
standing in the yard at the time, and as the.
mangled bedy of her husband was drawn from
uoder the building. she was almost distracted
by the terrible blow by whieh she was so eud.
denly bereft of her earthly hopes. She has)
since been completely prostrated both in body
and mind,
The funeral took place Sunday forenoon at
the Congregational Church, and Rev. J. H.
Warren pronouneed a feeling and appropriate .
eulogy on the character and werth of the de.
cvased. His remains were followed to the
grave by a large number of citizens, Mr, Har.

he was among our best citizens and his loss is .
universally lamented. He was thirty-four years
of age. and emigrated to this country from)

CLEANING up.—A walk to American Hill, a
pleasant afternoon of last week brought us up
on the exteasive diggings of our friend Amos
T. Laird. During a year past he has been en-.
gaged, while the water was abundant in tear.
ing up a small mountain and has pretty nearly
annihilated it. The ground is stripped for a
quarter of a mile along the bed of an old water
course, doubtless the old Coyote lead, and the
work of cleaning up has been commenced. It
will perhaps require the remainder of the water
run to complete the cleaning of the bed rock.
It is believed by those acquainted with the diggings that should be succeed in cleaning the
ground already stripped that he will make the
heaviest draft ever made in Nevada county, in
any one set of claims. Besides these diggings

claims in the fall of 1855 realized the company

act passed by the Legislature was one extending
