The London News on Fort Boneisen: The Illastrated London News of March 15th has these remarks on the capture of Fort Donelson: The pressure of the immense force organized by the Federal Government of America begins at length to tell upon the Southern Confederacy, Several minor sueccesses in the southwest have culminated iu capture of Fort Donelson, with nearly its whole garrison, armament, ammunition and stores. General Floyd, it is true, with 5,000 men escaped during the night preceding the surrender, otherwise the victory was complete. The Confederates have abandoned the important strategical poeition which they held at Bowiing Green. Nashville, the seat of the Southern Government, appeared by last advices to be,in immineut danger, Whenever it falls, the relatiou of the Border States to the great struggle betweeu the North and South will bave been virtually determined. Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri will have been recovored for the Union, The army which has so long covered Manassas Ga will be exposed to be taken in the rear, an must retire, Gen. McClellan will be able to clear Virginia, and secession will be shut up io the GulfStates, the slave States roper, to fight for endurable terms of submission, or to bold out to the last for inde. pendence. * * * The recovery of the Border States will enable the Government at Washington to put an end to the war on terms at once honorable and ad vantagous; terms, moreover, which will relieve it from the omaha of dealing » ‘h the difficult question of Slavery, But we fear that this termination of the struggle is not to be hoped for, at least for the present. Posstbly, too, it is only ovr ignorance of the real temper of the South which permits us to wish for it. It may turn out, after all that secession has been mainly the work of ambitious and disappointed politicians, Whose objects, in the hour of misfortune, the majority of the population, even in the slave States, will decline further to the ruin ofall their material interest and prospects, Gen, Scorr ar Cusruttrersc —The New York Chamber of Commerce voted $3,000 for the purchase of Troye’s historical painting of Major General Winfield Scott at Chepultepec, to be presented by the subseribers to Lieutenant General Scott, as a tribute of esteem and veneration, An engraving of it will also be made, and copies distributed to public libraries, galleries, eto, In regard to this painting the New York Tribune says: Two years ago the authorities of the Vir. ginia Military ins:itute requested General Scott to sit for an equestrian portrait, to be placed in their institute, aud employed KE. Troye, the artist of the Dead Sea, and otber well-known paintings, to execute the work. At the same time, distingaished Virginians requested Mr. Troye to paint another picture, to be purchased by the State of Virginia. Gen, Scott, at great personal inconvenience, recalled an intention he had expressed not to sit fora portrait, and not ouly sat but mounted a horse, resembling the one he rode at Chepultepec, and devoted much of bis valuable time, when bis bealth was greatly impaired, to the artist’s studio and labors, Both pictures were completed when the rebellion broke out, and Virginia refased to take them. One of the pictures is in the Rotunda at Washington; the other, a magnificent historical portrait of the General at Chepultepec, about nine by twelve feet in size, is at the rooms of the Chamtcr of Commerce. A Heavy Sprii.—Most of the gold tuken out atthe mills on the Fremont estate, is melted and cast into bare before being sent down, Last week the melte:, in taking a crucible of red-hot melted ore from the furnace tothe mould, it slipped ont of bis immediate possess'on, and the whole of {ts contents, over $11,000, was scattered very promiscuously over the door. The slop over was rather terrific, for it set fire to every: thing it touched, However, that was soon . pat out and the gold recovered, with the . for coin, in this town. loss of a couple of ounces or eo, Tue Mines IN Siskiyou.—The news from the different mining localities of the county, are of the most cheering nature. At no season within the past three years, has the yield of gold been equal to that of the present spring, Gold dust to the amount of about seventy-five thousand dollars per week, is now exchanged When we take into consideration the fact that there are, comparatively, but few miners at work in this county, at present, it will be seen that the yield of dust is unusually large. At Oro Fino, Humbug, Scott river, Cherry creek, and, in fact, every mining section in the county, where they are at work, all are doing well. The mines are here, and there is no Salmon or Powder river probability about their paying. All they want is . work.—[ Yreka Union. he Quality of . borse aud cattle show, and a meeting of . epecd at the Maryeville ee In the space of forty years Mexico has had no few than fifty-five different Governments,
