NEVAD
WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 16, 1860.
—_—————
RELIEF MEASURES AT NEVADA.
The Washoe Expedition.
The dispatches received on Sunday afternoon,
from Virginia City, stating that some seventy-five
Americans had been killed in an Indian fight, prodced an intense excitement in Nevada. Crowds of
people collected on the street corners, and a rush
was soon made for the Court House, On finding
that religious services were being held in that building, the crowd started for the Theater. The drums
were beat, and in a few minutes the Theater was
packed full of people. A meeting was organized by
appointing T. H. Rolfe chairman, and H. B. Thompson Secretary. The chairman then briefly stated
‘the substance ofthe telegraphic dispatches, and
that the object of the meeting was to take measures
to send assistance to the people of Western Utah.
Volunteers were called for, and Messrs. Birdseye,
Gregory. Hagadorn and Tower, were appointed a
committee to collect subscriptions and fit out the
Company with arms, amunition and provisions.
The meeting then took a recess for two hours, and
the Committee went to work. A subscription paper was started, headed by Birdseye & Felton, who
put down $500; Messrs. D. Crittenden, H. A. Hagadorn, Wm. Maltman, J.S. Lambert, C. H. Seymour, A. E. Head and Jas. Whartenby, subscribed
$100 each, and a large number of others gave from
$25 to $75 each. Our citizens, with few exceptions
subscribed in proportion to their means, and in the
course of a few hours the committee reported that
$2,245 had been paid over. In the meantime Johnson & Sale’s pack train of thirty mules had been
-engaged, and a large quantity of arms and amuni‘tion were dispatched im charge ofa company of
twenty men. They took with them 60 rifles, 49 of
which belong to the Nevada company, 125 pounds
of powder, 100 pounds of lead, 60 pounds of rifle
balls, 1200 cartridges, and 18,000 caps. The cartidges were manufactured by Mr. Z. P. Davis during the afternoon and evening, auda quantity of
caps to fit the U. S. Rifles were brought up from
Sacramento by O. T. Ganong, who rode the distance in five hours. The following are the names
of the company :
J.B. Van Hagen,
D. Webber,
William Bradley,
J. L. Newman,
J.R. Gray, A. W. Potter,
O. S, Stevens, Jchn Gray,
David Reed, hos. Marsh,
Kepner Carnes, J. Price,
H. A. Kelley, S. Miller,
J.R. Parker, Thos. L. Ford,
J.N. Miller, Thos. James.
W. VY. Griffin,
The company started about two o’clock on Monday morning, taking with them everything needed
for their own use, together with allthe arms and
amunition that could be procured on so short a notice. It is understood that there are plenty of men
in Washoe, but they are destitute of arms and munitions.
Yesterday afternoon, a dispatch was received from .
Downieville, stating that there was a large body of
Indians in Long Valley, and that the settlers in
Sierra Valley, fearing an attack, were leaving their
homes. Long Valley is not far from the Henness
trail, and fearful that Van Hagan and his party
might be surprised and cut off, Messrs. Roberts and
Johnson started immediately, on horseback, to overtake the company and warn themofthe danger.
Another meeting was also held, on recéipt of the
news, and measures taken to send re-inforcements.
The company is being organized as we go to press,
and they design to keep on traveling until they overtake Van Hagan’s company.
We learn that nine persons joined the company
at Eureka, making twenty-eight in all. Besides
their riding horses, they have thirty mules packed
with provisions, arms and amunition; they cannot
travel very fast, and it is believed that Roberts and
Johnson will overtake them at Maples’ ranch.
Benerit Batt.—The friends of Con. Murphy,
who was disabled last August, while engaged in
firing a salute to the late D.C. Broderick, have
made arrangements to give a ball for his benefit.
The ball comes off at Sullivan’s Ball Court, Broad
street, on Friday evening May 25th. Con. Murphy
was an industrious, energetic young man, but was
quite disabled by the sad accident, and is without
means for his support. He isa worthy object of
charity, and we trust that those who feel an interest in his welfare will respond tothe call, and aid
in making up a handsome sum for his benefit.
“RicBarn CHaMpaion.”—Mr. Worthington
brought us yesterday a bottle of wine manufactured
out of the rhubarb plant, at his garden near Grasse
Valley. He calls it “Rhubarb Champaign.” It
tastes very much like new cider, but as it acquires
age it is saidto very much resemble champaign.
We learn that Mr. Worthington manufactured
about thirty gallons of the article, the most of which
he has given away. It is certainly a very fine tasting article. We are also indebted to Mr. Worthington fora quantity of pic-plant, raised at his
place this season.
Postronsp.—The presentation raffle of Mons.
A. Liebert has been postponed until next Tuesday
evening. The postponement was rendered necessa.ry, in consequence ofa larger number of tickets
having been returned than expected. The few tickets remaining on hand will be disposed ofin a few
days, and the prizes will be drawn next Tuesday,
without fail.
Fine ALARM.—Quite an excitement was created
in town, Sunday afternoon, by an alarm of fire proceeding from the upper end of Broad street. The
alarm was occasioned by the burning of a bed in
some sleeping-room, but the fire was soon extinguished and the excitement subsided.
: Special Notice.

account, are particularly requested to make immediate
payment, without further Notice.

QUINCY HALL,
Nos. 149 and 151, Washington street,
The reputation of this establishment is known to moat of
our readers throughout the State, as well asin Oregon
and Washington Territory ; nevertheless, for the benefit
more particularly of strangers, it may be proper to say
that at Quincy Hall, every style and quality of
Men and Boy's Wearing Apparel,
Comprising, at all times, the largest stock in the line on
the Pacific Const, is to be found at prices absolutely lower than any other house in the country can afford—na
low, in fact, as the current ratos of thé leading retail establishments of the Eastern cities. This is no humbug,
buncombe assertion ; on the contrary, it ia simply the
truth, which is proven every day and every hour by all
classes of the community. The miner, the farmer, the
business man, the laborer, men in all the varied cireumstances of life—the rich alike with the poor—all patronize Quincy Hall. andallare surr-ed to their taste and
their purse. You can buy the finest articles,or you
can buy the coarsest, and the price, if you are not utterly unreasonable, will be certain to give satisfaction,
