The introduction of common writing paper rendered necessary pens of a finer character nd caused a demand for goose quills. A great trade grew up in these articles, which even the more recent introduction of steel and gold pens has uot materially diminished, Poland and Russia ave largely engaged in it, In asingle year St. Peters burg bas furnished Bogland over 27,000,000 of quills, Within the last fifty years steel pens of various kinds have bven maoefactured in Great Britain, avd the oumber made anoually io Birmingham bas heen estimated at one thousand millions. Several attempts have been made tu establish this manufacture ia the United States, but it bas een found almost bopeless to compete with the manufacturers of Birmingham. The art of making gold pens bas, however, been carried to the bighest perfection in New York, #0 that the only really excellent pen ased in Europe is obtained in this country, The machinery used for this parpose was invented by Mr. Rendell, and improved by Mr. Fairchild, and ie carious aud elaborate— more than twenty @ stinct operations being required in the production of a single pen, There are seven or eight factories for this manfacture io the city of New York; one in Brooklyn, N. There are thirty persons bearing his name, and related to bim, now in the United States service decendants of Ephraim Lyon, of Connecticut, a lawyer by profession, anda Lieutenant inthe Revolutionary war, These are all in the Counecticut regiments, aud many of them from the same county. A young nephew of General Lyon, a boy of fifteen oe old, named Arthor, eulisted in the inth Connecticut regiment immediately after the General’s remains were taken home and buried in bis native town. Arthur was at school, whch he left the next day after the burial to join the regiment, He had no idea of jJeaving his school to fight until he saw his uncle Nathaniel low. ered into tne grave. From that moment he was seizod with a desire and a purpose to enter the army and avenge bis death. Krencu Gaisty.—A strange instance of that French gaiety, which Goldemith describes as making the gay grandsire to frisk ia the mirthfal mages of the village dance, beneath the weight of 70 years of age, has lately been exhibted at the Commune of Moniesque Volestre. where the your de fete of two old women, vamed Jeanne Cbristine Merre and Marie Lacombe, was celebrated by the commune in honor of their great age. The former was born on the 18th of September, 1760, and the latter in 1757, on the same day of the month, The first was, consequeatly, 101, and the second 104 Years fold, Seeing several of the villagers dancing to the music of a wandering harp player, both started up, declaring their in tention of joining in the amusement, as it might be the last time they would have another chance of doing so. Their forebod ings were speedily faltilled; the next morning Jeanne Christine Merre was found dead beside the fire, and a few days later Marie Lacombe breathed her last. neni Piva vor tuk Use or Tosacoo.— Dr Gulick, who is lecturing in this state, on the islands of the Pacific, states, that among the cannibals the flesh of while men, who use tobacco is regarded as unpalatable. YOUNG, Late Professor of the University of Pennsylvania, CAN BE FOUND AT HIS Private Medical Office a1 Hospital, NO. 751 CLAY STREET; 0; posite the southwest corner of the Plaza, SAN FRANCISCO, HERE HE CAN BE CONSULTED privately, and with the utmost confidence by the afflicted, at all hours daily, from 94. M. tod P.M. DR. YOUNG addresses those who are suffering under the affliction of private disease, whether arising from impure connection or the terrible vice of self abuse. Devoting bis entire time to that particular braneh of the medicai profession, he feels warranted in GUARANTEEING ACUREIN ALLCASES, whether of long standing or recently contracted, entirely removing the dregs of disease from the system, and muking a perfect and PERMANENT CURE. He would call the attention of the afflicted to the fact of his long standing and well earned reputation, furnishing sufficient assurance of his skill and suecexs, Upwards of five charged cured in the showing a record surpassing any United States, CONSULTATION , thousand cases have been disyear ending July Ist, 1860, by letter or otherwise, FREE, ~—_ Caution to the Public. Every intelligent and thinking person must know that remedies handed out for general use should have their efficacy established by well tested expe rience in the hands of a regularly educated physi cian, whose preparatory study fits him for all the duties he must fulfill; yet the country is flooded with poor nostrums and cure-alls, purporting to be the best in the world, which are not only useless, but always injurious. The unfortunate should be Par TICULAR in selecting his physician, as it is a lamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic patients are made miserable with ruined constitutions by mal-treatment fromm inexperienced physicians in general practice; for it is a point generally conceded by the best syphilographers, that the study and man. agement of these complaints should engross the whole time of those who would be competent and successful in their treatment and cure. The inexperienced general practitioner, having neither opportunity nor time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with their pathology, comonly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an indiscriminate use of that antiquated and dangerous weapon, Inercury. More caution, however, should be used by the syph ilitic patient, in cousulting nominal physicians of the advertising elass, as nine-tenths of them are imposters, who assume German, French, or other naines, and are without any claims to medical knuwledge. These knavish rascals infest all large cities, and, by means of their lying advertisements and posters, they induce the unwary to enter their Peter Funk ‘institutions,’ and unmercifully fleece them and poison them with mercury. Persous living ata distance in the country are more apt to be duped by the lying notices of quacks than citizens. In view of the above facts, Dr. J. C. YOUNG would say that he is the only regularly educated physician in Catifornia now advertising, who devotes his whole time to the treatment of venereal diseases, Office, 751 Clay street. opposite the Plaza, Hours from 9 A, M., to 3 P. M. cece Queenan HAVE CONFIDENCE, DR. YOUNG will guarantee a perfect and permanent cure in the following cases, or he charges nothing for his services: Syphilis, Gonoerrheea, Stricture of the Urethra, Affection of the Prostrate Gland, Weakness of the Genital Organs, Impotency, Sterili ty, both in the male and female, Spermatoria, or Semlnal Weakness, Noctural Emissions, Rheuma tism, Dyspepsia, indigestion, Fever and Ague, Incip ient Consumption, and all Irregularities in Females, together with all diseases of Women and Children; also, Nervousness, Palpitation of the Heart, ete. Persons afflicted with syinptoms after being treated should consult Dr. Young at once, as no disease . iscured unless the patient feels perfectly well. If there is a particle of disease left in the system it will break out some future time, when least expected, or be handed down to an innocent offspring. Persons who have been treated with mercury should be very cautious in believing that they are well, for it is a scientific fact thatt he mercury wil! mingle with the venereal, and form a disease a great deal worse than the original. All those who bave reason to think, by bad feelings, that they have been treated thus, should consult Dr. Young, and he will examine their cases and tell them at once how they stand, — TAKE COURAGE—NEVER DESPAIR. Neson CreEK, Sept. 30, 1861, Dr. J.C. Youna,—You will remember what a poor wreiched erea'ure I was when . last saw you, and the result has astonished me as well as my friends. Your invaluable prescription and excellent advice have completely overcome ailments such as, it seems to me, never afflicted mortal before. 1 never wrote a letter with greater sati<faction than J pen this. Ishall remember you with gratitude as long asl live. That you may live long to alleviaie the sufferings of others as you bave mine, is my earnest prayer. Please accept my heartfelt thanks that you have brought this almost hopeless case to so happy a termimation. Yours, truly, JAMES HALSEY. STRICTURE. This terrible disease is alarmingly on the increase in this country, and should be attended to in season for there is no complaint more dangerous, and attenced with more suffering than this fatal disease. Any person who has been troubled with venereal, seminal weakness, or any other private disease, should watch very closely for this trouble — Its first symptoms is generally an unpleasant sensation in the parts, sometimes of a tickling nature, an uneasiness of the mind, an undefined dread of something you know not what. and if net attended to the urine becomes affected, and then follow all those dreadful . syinptoms which so often result in a miserable and disgusting death. But the suffering, before death comes to relieve the patient, is dreadful; sometimes. plunging the sufferer into that living death—Insanity. Dr J.C. Young’s mode of treatment is a new discovery, made within a few years by M, Ricord of the French Venereal Hospital; and is sure, safe and speedy All afflicted should call on Dr. Young at onee, and . they will be sure of a permanent cure without an operation. P.S.—DPr. J. C. Young’s Medical Works give a more detailed account of the above awful disease, Der. J, €. Young’s Office is at No, 751 Clay street, opposite the the Portsmouth House, San Francisco, California, DO NOT BE DECEIVED. Tn consequence of the wide spread celebrity of Dr, J. ©. Young, certain pretenders have palmed themselves upon the unsuspecting, as being the veritable . Dr. Young. Persons wishing to avail themselves of D. Y’s skill should be very careful and call at his office, or send some known triend that will not deceive . them, as the landlords of some disreputable hotels . have been in the habit of keeping loungers on at their places, and when requesied to call Dr. Y., have . yalmed such persons upon the invalid as being Dr. Young. The Doctor will always be ready to attend on cases where the patient is not able to call, His medicines pannot be obtained at any other place in the country, as he has no agents. Therefore, be careful, and not be deceived by any of the quacks and imposters of the State. J. C. YOUNG, M. D. Office, 761 Clay street, opposite the “Portsmouth House.”’ Office hours from 9 a.
