Moore and Northup, indicted fer the murder of Reynolds, were aryaigned, the indictment read, and they were given until Tuesday to plead. Wm. Hunt and Michael Doran were admitted to citizenship. The calendar was called over and the following cases set for trial: May 19th—Havrick & Ferguson vs. Ferguson. May 24th—Makcer & Dibble vs. Boring et. al. May 26th—Nancy A. McGrath vs. McMurray; Hepbura vs. Day. May 27th—Lobdell vs. McPutney and Arm-. strong. May 28th—Goldworthy ve. Mt. Hope Mining Co, ay 29th—Rogers vs. Holloman. Ann Von Poellnitz vs. Nicholson, Lachman . and Caia, The cases of Moore and Northup were called up yesterday, and each plead ‘‘not guilty” to . the crime as charged in the indietment. The . case of Moore was set for trial on the 3d of . June next. The case of Northup was postponed to evable counsel to procure important witnesses supposed to be out of the State. Demurrers were submitted in six cr seven cases, . argued by counsel, and the questions raised taken under advisement by the Court. Terris AccipeNT.—Mr. Samuel N. Palmer, the principal owner of some mining claims at . Junction Bluffs, near Sebastopol, was killed last Saturday forenoon. A deep shaft had heen . which was nearly full of . sunk on the claims, water, and a tunael run in several hundred fect to near the bottom of the shaft, Mr, Palmer went into the tunnel to tap the shaft in order to let the water out through the tunnel. Ie had previously made every preparation to save himself. by running a side drift frem the tunnel, into which he intended to dedye as the water came out. As the shaft was tapped, ib is supposed that the water rushed out with such sad. den force that he bad not timo to save himeclf . ly jumping into the drift. He was cauglit by the water, which fureed him out of the tannel! and earried him several hundred feet down the . hill. The force of the water, by throwing him . against the timbers of the tunnel and rolling . him over the rocks, bad broken nearly every bone and crushed his body to a jelly; bis skull was broken open, and the cavity of the brain filled with sand. The deccased was formerly from Devonshire,England. He was auintelligent and industrious man, and highly esteemed by those who knew him. His funeral took place last Sunday, at San Juan, and was attended by vearly al) the citizens of that place. Nevapa Fouxpry.—Messrs. Thom & Williams have recently manufactured at their foundry and machine shop on Spring street, a tweaty. live horse-power engine, which is designed for . } as ' a crushing mill at Hants Hill. The boiler and stamping, battery was alse made at this foun. dry. The engine is complete in all its parts, and would do credit to the They employ constantly . and orders for well-finished, best foundry in the State. some ten or twelve workmen, castings are accumulating so fast upon thein that they have determined to enlarge their estublisbment. Their business has been steadily increasing for the past year, and they are now prepared to execute all kinds of castings which are used in the State, at cheaper rates than the same articles can be purchased below and hauled to Nevada. Lovurs Go _opere.—An effort has been made to procure a pardon for Louis Goldburg, convicted at the late term of the District Court of manslaughter, for killing John Enders. A pe. tition for pardon numerously signed was forwarded to the Governor, but he refused to . comply with the request of the petitioners. . Geldburg is a harmless, inoffensive man, and . when he stabbed Enders probably supposed he . was defending his own life. Many were of the opinion he should have becn acquitted. It is not contendea, however, that any improper in. fluenees were used to procure a conviction, and the trial was in every respect fair end impartial. Mixing Accipext.—Mr. James Freeland was killed last Friday, near Wolscy’s Flat, while at . work in his claims, @y being buried beneath a. slide. He was holding the hose at the time, and as the bank caved down he called out to, the other workmen to get out of the way, and started to run himself. On crossing a ground sluice hefell, and was caught by the sliding earth and carried some thirty or forty feet. His body was soon taken oyt, byt life was extinet. One of his ankles was broken, but oth. erwise his body was apparently uninjured. The . deceased was formerly from Michigan. Circus.—Lee’s National Circus and Hippo. drome will visit this town for the purpose of . giving an equestrian performance, next Wed. nesday evening. Mr. Pridbam, the agent of the company, started up country last Sunday morning tomuke the necessary arrangements for their appearance in the towns above. TaxatTer.—Mr. and Mrs. James are announced to make their first appearance at the Nevada Theater next Saturday evening, on which occasion the celebrated drama of the “Tron Mask’’ will be presented for the first time . in this place. The piece is one of great intrinsic merit, and the character of Leon, demanding as.it does all the great and varied . abilities of an acedmplished actor, is caid te be sustained by Mr. Wallack with powerful effect. Mrs. . Wallack, as Hortense has been much commended. Leo Brokey.—Pat Corbitt in company with . several others, started for Grass Valley, last Sunday evening, in a two-horse buggy. Soon after leaving town they met the Grass Valley stage and turned out of the road to let it pass. By some means the buggy was upset, and Corbitt being thrown on a pile of rocks had the bone of his left leg fractured below the knee. The limb was swollea so much that the physicians . had not been able up to yesterday afternoon to Donation Suprer.—The ladies of the M. E. Chureh are making preparations for a Supper, They design having it come off at the Virginia House, on Wednesday evening May 26th—tickets admitting a lady and gentleman, five dol. lars, and can be had at the book steres, and at Spence’s drug store. No pains will be spared to. make the supper a good one and the cvening’s entertainment agreeable. For Frazer River.—Quite a number of miners have left Nevada county within the past week or two for Frazer river mines.
