Ignorance and Happiness.
In the appendix te the second part of Layard’s Nineveh, we find the following letter from
8 Tarkish Cadi, in reply toan application for
statistical information regarding the city and
province in which the Cadi dwelt :
“My Illustrious Friead and Joy of my Liver!
—The thing you oee for is both difficult aad
useless, At u ve passed all my days
in this place. I have neither counted the houses nor have I inquired into the namber of the
inbabitaots ; and as for what ene person loads
on bis mules, and anotber stows away on bis
sbip, that is no business of mine. But above
all, God only koows the amount ef dirt and
confusion that the infidels may have eaten before the coming of the swordof Islam. It were
unprofitable to us to inquire into it.
“O my soul! O my lamb! seek not after the
things which concern ye not. Thou eamest unto us, and we weleomed thee; ge in peace.
“Of a truth, thou hast spoken many words;
and there isno harm done, forthe speaker is
one and the listener is another. After the fashion of my people thou hast wandered from one
place to another, until ye are happy and contentin none. We, (praise be to God,) were
born here, and never desire to quit it. Is it
possible, then, that the idea of a general intercourse between mankind should make any impression on our understanding? God forbid!
“Listen, Omy son! There is no wisdom
equal unto the belief in God. He created the
» world ; shall we liken ourselves to Him in secking to penetrate the mysteries of His creation?
Shall we say, behold this star epioneth round
tbat etar, and this another star with @ tail cometh and goeth io so many years. Let it go, He
from who¢e hand it came, will direct and guide
t,
“ But thou wilt say unto me, stand aside, O
man, for . am more learned than thou art, and
have seen more things. If thou thiokest that
thou art io this respect better than I am, thou
art welcome, I praise God that I seek not that
which I require not. Thou art learned in the
things I care not for; and as fer that which
thou hast seen, I defile it. Will much know!lcreate thee a double stomach, or wilt thou seek
Paradise with thine eyes?
“O my frieud! if thou wilt be bappy, say.
there is no God but God! Do not evil, aud
thus wilt thou fear neither man or death ; for
surely thine hour will come!
“The meek in spirit, (El Fakir.)

A Goop Srony.—A New York letter writer
tells a good story ofa well known journalist
and wit, as follows:
“Ata pleasant reunion the other night, a
story was told of a well-known Kentucky editor, whese squips and equirks are copied from .
Maine to Louisana, Not only famous asa po.
et, lecturer and wit, be is known to be subject, ,
although a baebelor, to am imordinate devotion .
to the fair sex. Heise the most gallaut man .
alive. His paper is the safety-vaive of all the
tesses of his regiou, and bis private desk is
id to contain more perfumed notes, phutographs and ecissored ringlets, than it is often
permitted one manto oollect. Ooly a few
months since the too susceptible journalist
pacsed a few weeks in New York, and fell desad iu love with one of our charming
lies. The lady was surprised at receiving a
letter from bim, which, though not exactly ap
offer, contained such ardent assurances of devotion as made his case seem very hopeless,
Though perhaps not evamored with a geatleman twice her age and never remarkable for
his beauty, she could not but feel flattered by
homage from so distioguished a source. With
pardonable vanity. she showed the billet-doux
to a couple of fair frivuds, also well acquainted
with its author, when lo! the astonishing fact
was revealed that cach of the unfortunate
maidens bad received precisely the same epiatie
verbatim et literatim et punetuatin, A plot was
made for the punishment of the triugsal lover,
Invited to a little party at the first mentioned
lady’s abode, he found himself in the presence
of the injured three, cach of whom drew the
manifold letter from the shrino where damsels
hide such treasures, Then the tallest and most
regal beauty handed him her copy, opened,
with the smilling remark, “Ab, Mr. , 1 was
not aware that this wasa circular !’? From the
ludicrous manoer in which the editor incurred
this expose, it would seem as if, instead of being a master workmon, ho was only a ’prentice
at the love-making trade,’”’
Perivovs Baitoon Voraex.—Two gentlemen, Messrs. Cevor and Dalton, who made ao
balloon ascension at Savannah, Ga., March 9th,
had a perilous voyage, aad narrowly csoaped
drowning. After ascending two or three miles
they struck an eastern current whieh drifted
them rapidly toward the ocean, They then began to descend, and approaching the earth
threw out the grappling anchor which made
fast to a tree, but the wind blowing very strong
parted the cable, and the balloon thus relieved
agaio shot up in the air and was carried with
great velocity toward the sea, They descended
into the water about fifty miles from Savannah, and were rescued by some men iv boat
who happened to observe them. Their journey
occupied just thirteen minutes,

THE GREAT AMERICAN REMEDY,
This preparation iss combination heretofore unknown
in the history of medicine, differing entirely in its character and operations from the various preparations of Sarsaparilla whieh have been at different times offered to the

by any other treatment, even after the disease has baftied
the skill of eminent physicians and resisted all their
means of cure. The medicines prescribed are pleasant,
without oder, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and
free from mercury or balsam. During fifteen years of
ractice in Europe, the Atlantic States and California, I
ave rescued from the jaws ofdeath many thousands,
who, in the last stages of the above mentioned diseases,
had been given up to die by theifpbysicians, which warrants mein promising to the ieted, who may place
themselves nnder my care, a perfect. and speedy cure,
Private diseases are the greatest enémies to health, as
they are the first cause of Consumption, Serofula, and
many other diseases, and should be a terror te the human family. A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected,
a majority of the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only failto cure the disease, but
ruin the constitution, filling the system with mercury,
which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid
consuin ption.
But should the disease and the treatment net cause
death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is entailed upor the children, who are born with weakly constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus
which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions,
and other affections of the skin, eyes, throat and lungs,
entailing upen them a brief existence of suffering and
consigning them to an early grave.
SELF-ABUSE is another formidable enemy to health,
for nothing else in the dread catalogue of disease causes
so destructive « drain upon the system, drawing its thousaudsof victims through a few years of suffering to an untimely grave. It destroys the nervous syste, rapidly
wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the proper developmsnt of the system,
disqualfies for marriage, society, business, and all earthly
happiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and
mind, predisposed to consumption and a train of evils
more to be dreaded than death itself. With the fullest
confidence, . assure the unfortunate victims of self-abuse
that a permanent and speedy cure can be effected, and
with the abandonment of ruinous practices, my patients
can be restored to robust, vigorous health.
Irregularities and all diseases of inales and females, are
treated on principles established by filteen years of practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most remarkable
cures. Medicines with full directions, sent to any part of
the State, Oregon eand Washington Territories, by patients communicating their symptoms by letter, Business correspondence strictly confidential,

Thankfulness ls the Incentive to Gratitude,
(CERTIFICATE. )
The undersigned, desirous of acquainting those whe
may be unfortunate enough to be similarly afflicted,
where a permanent relief of their sufferings may be obtained, feels it his duty to thus publicly express his moat
sincere gratitude to Dr, L. J. Crapkay for the permanent
recovery of his health, Borne down by the distressing
symptoma incident to the vicious practices of uncontrolable passion in youth, depressed in body and mind, unable
to perform even the most trifling duty imposed by the
daily avocations of life, I sought the advice of many physicians, who at first regarded my disease as of trifling importance; but, alas, after a few weeks, and in several instances, months of their treatment, I found, to my unutterable horror, that instead of relief, my symptoms tecame more alarming in their torture; and being told by
one that my disease being principally confined to the
brain, medicine wouid be of little consequence, I despaired
of ever regaining my health, strength and energy ; and as
a last resort, and with but a faint hope. I called apon Dr.
Czapkay, who, after examining my case, prescribed some
medicine, which almost instantly relieved me of the dull
pain and dizziness in my head. Encouraged by the result
1 resolved to place myself under his care, and, by a strict
obedience to all his directions and advice, my head becamo clear, my ideas collected; the constant pain in my
back and groins, the weakness of my limbs, the nervous
reaction of my whole body on the slightest alarm or excitement, the misanthropy and evil forebodings, the selfdistrust and want of confidence in others, the incapability
to study. the want of resolution, the frightful, exciting,
and at times pleasurable dreams by night, followed by involuntary discharges, have all disappeared, and, in fact,
in two menths after having consulted the Doctor, I felt as
if inspired by a new life—that life which, a short time
ago, 1 contemplated to end with my own hand.
With a view to guard the unfortunate from falling into
the snares of incompetent quacks, I deem it my duty to
offer this testimony to the merits and skill of Dr. Czapkay
and recommend him to all who may stand in need of medical advice, being assured by my own experience, that
once under his care, a radical and permanent cure will be
effected.

FROM THE SACRAMENTO STANDARD,
The question is often asked, **Why is it that Dr. Stackpole is so successful; while other advertising physicians
are failing from day to day?’’ The answer must be, or
should be, plainly apparent to all; itis that he understands his profession, and as his practice increases his
a(liicted to call upon him in preference to any other physician. Weare informed that he treats entirely on the
Vegetable system, and willalways warrant a perfect cure:
His office is at the corner of Montgomery and California

There are thousands in this State suffering for want of
scientific medical treatment, and they fear to apply tea
riends have been by some of the charlatans who infest
the country and who publish themselves as good physicians, professors, &c. To all such we unhesitatingly recommend Dr. Stackpole as a physicianin whom all can
place confidence. He isa man of eminentand profound
study, a good surgeon, an honorable inan and one who
can sympathise with persons in affliction, His standing
asa physician anda gentleman are both guaranteed—
the first by his medical works, which are an honor to
their author; andthe extensive and highly successful
course of practice by which he has been honored since
his advent in California, and the latter by his numerous
patrons and large eircle of acquaintances. We say to all

principle—no cure, no pay.
