Runaway.—One of the attaches of Cheap
John’s establishment was taking a short ride
‘in a sulky this morning, and was accidentally
*hrown out near the junction of Main and Pine
streets. The animal took fright and run at
full speed into town, and making a dash for
the Broad Street Book Store, was brought up
flat on his side, upon the sidewalk. One of the
sulky springs was broken, but the horse was not
injured. *
Stwy ‘or PRrockeEDINGS.— Mr. Waters,
counsél for Burke, now under sentence of
death, wert below some days ago to procure an
order from the Sepreme Court staying the execution. We are informed that a dispatch was
received from Mr. Waters yesterday, stating
that the Supreme Court had granted a supersedeas, but the officers have not yet been notified
of the fact. The order will probably be up this
evening.
Pic-nic.—The children connected with the
Baptist Sabbath School give a pic-nic on Thursday next. The affair comes off at Sutton’s ranch,
on the Grass Valley toll-road. The children,
and all others who may wish to join in the procession, are requested to meet at the Baptist
church at half-past eight o’clock Thursday morning. The Nevada Cadets will turn out on the
occasion, and escort the children to the pic-nic
grounds,
Business CHANGE.—We learn that Messrs.
Spence & Wickes have purchased the drug
store of Dr. H. Hunt, and leased the brick
building on Pine street, next adjoining Cheap
John, where they purpose opening ina day or
two. Their drug store on Broad street will
still be kept open.
Warm WeatTHER.—To-day has been the
warmest of the season. At seven o'clock this
morning, the mercury in a thermometer hanging on the north side of a brick building, stood
at 59 degrees above zero, and from twelve to
‘three o’clock it stood at about seventy-four degrees.
Union Satoon.—This saloon, on Pine
‘street, lately kept by John Grimes, and which
wae closed last week, has been re-opened by Mr.
McCarty. We refer to his advertisement in
another column.
Benerit.—The Nevada Hose Co. realized
$150 from the lectures of T. Starr King, delivered on Wednesday and Thursday evenings,
for their benefit.
Mitirary BALL.—The Nevada Cadets purpose giving a military ball next Thursday evening. The affair comes off at Temperance Hall.
THANKS, to Pattison of the Pioneer Express
Co., for late Downieville and Nevada Territory
papers,
Scarcity or Trovut.—The Mariposa Gazette says that the streams in the mountains
are entirely cleared of trout—so say mountain
men and Indians. The great mass of drift
which has accumulated upon the banks of these
‘streams, above the highest water for years past
when swept away by the flood, either killed or
‘swept the fish away with it.
Jas. McCang, of San Francisco, offers a reward of $100 to any ene who can furnish satisfactery evidence and informatiou as to the
murder of Sylvester Rees, formerly of Battle
Creek, Michigan, supposed to have been murdered by the Indians tn 1852, while packing between Shasta and Pitt River.
CHALLENGE.—Pedro Selaya, it will be remembered, was beaten in a foot race, last year,
by David Carr. Selaya suys he was not ina
condition to run well last season, but is willing
to try it again with Carr, at San Jose, on July
the 4th, for any sum from one to four thousand
dollars.
Hay.—The Stockton Independent says that
new hay begins to arrive in that market, and
that farmers generally throughout the country
are beginning to mow.

Parties who are about erecting bridges will find it
greatly to their advantage to give usa call before

floods throughout the State have proven them to be
wholly unsafe and unreliable, A number of our wire
