Vessels—Op. Bw THELECRArE. We have intelligenoe from McClellan’s of the Monitor and Galena, in the late en gagement on James river, though it has delayed for a time the capture of Richmond, will, ia one respect, be a great advantage to the Government, It demonstrates that iron-clad vessele like the Galena can not resist shore batteriey at short range, and of course, bo more vessels will be armored like her. Of twenty-eight shots which struck the Galena, it is stated that eighteen penetrated her armor, while the Monitor, which was subjected to the same test, was uninjured. The two vessels cost about the same amount of money, and we believe have the same thickness of armor. But the Galena’s armor consists of solid four-inch iron. plates, while the Monitor is protected by four eeparate plates, each an inch thick, The latter plan,as may readily be supposed, with the the same thickness of armor, has a much greater resisting power.
