*P3a. Description:
The property consists of a two-story, painted brick masonry, Classical Revival storefront. Character defining
features of the building include a stepped parapet roof with sheathing or coping across the top of the parapet, a
row of brick dentils running horizontally below the plain friezes in the parapet, followed by another row or belt
course of brick set on edge forming a zig-zag pattern, and beneath the belt course three rectangular windows
having 1 over 1 light in a wood frame and a simple lintel above the window, followed by a replaced veranda
supported by steel poles at the appropriate elevation. Below the veranda the storefront features a wooden and
lighted double door entrance flanked by angled walls with display windows, what appears to be clerestory windows
covered with panels, two original cast pilasters on the end walls, and a more contemporary marble paneled skirt. A
bronze plaque affixed the sidewall of the building reads "GRASS VALLEY HARDWARE" Through the years the
prospecting hydraulic and hardrock mining. This hardware business, one of California's oldest, has served the
community.. in continuous operation at this site since 1854."
