Pleasure of Picketing, One of the Massachusetts Seventh, thus writes to the Fall River Press, from Yorktown : One of the pleasant incidents of warfare which every one has not the pleasure of witnessing, the members of Company A participated in yesterday. We were detailed to do picket duty ov the outposts, We started with a company of the New York 36th, at 56 o'elock Thursday afternoon, When we arrived at our post, I concluded that we had got into a bornet’s nest by the buzzing of the little messengers by our ears. We were stationed on Warwick creck, and the enemy’s pickets were stationed on the opposite side, about six hundred yards above, They kept a continual fire duriog the afternoon, and the way some of their bullets whistled past our beads if we poked them from bebind a tree, inclined us to believe that they were all armed and understood their use. Our orders were not to fire back, but in violation of ordere a stray shot would once in wv while find its way to the opposite side to let them koow that we still lived, This firing was kept up until dark, when the tongue superceded the rifle. Now came the tug of war. ithets were burled spitefully across. arwick’s turbid waters, The burthen of their song seemed to be, “We will give you Bali Ran.” “What do you think of Corjoth?’” “You can have Yorktown if you can takeit,” “You are five to our one, but you can’t whip us; to which tatter as. sertion one of our boys replied that it was #0, as it took four Yankees to catch one of them, for ove of us to whip. They finally came to the conclusion they could not out talk us in that style. so they tried another tack, wade all manuer of inquiries of how we lived, what State we were from, etc. They ivformed us ‘that they were from South Carolina, and if we would not fire on them in the morning, they would come out and talk with us, Morning came, and with it a friendly conversation ensued at first under cover of trees, and as they gained confidence, either party came out trom cover. They told us that they lived’ principally upon fresh meat and “sponge’’—solt bread; “shingles’’— hard bread had played out with them, Salt was vot within their limite, it being twenty dollarsa rack. Coffee could not be got— it wav a luxury not enjoyed by a soldier. We asked them if they had any “salt junk.’ ae bad not got down to pickled mule ye The Monitor, they averred, was a bumbog, the Merrimac a big thing. She was not injured by tve Mouitor, bat broke off her iron prow by collision with the Cum. berland; bad been on the dry dock and was launched the day before. They bad a large story of our being whipped at Corioth bat eince then their pickets have owned up i they were well used up at that They are not allowed to read anything but the Richmond Dispateh, and they said that lied like b—. l. When the time came for them to be relieved they told us to look out for ourselves, as there was a new crowd coming on, and they would not be responsi le for what they would do, And sure enough ina short time the ball was again opened by whistling bullets from our pecan g friends, They told us that Gen, Magruder war on a drunk the day before, aud was putting on his airs, ar usual, when ia that condition, We were 30 bours on this picket, and ail were well pleased with the novelty of the service, Roeper, Generats.—The mortality among the rebel commanders since the war commenced has been remarkable, Garnett was killed at Oarrick’s Ford; Burton and Bee at Manaseas; Zollicoffer at Mill Springs; ulloch, McIntosh and Slack at Pea ; A.
