Gen. Walker's Designs,
The real designs of General Walker are
the subject of quite an agitation, both South
and North at this time. it may be asked
of what use is it to discuss the intentions of
. & dead man; but the recent falmination of
. General Henningsen in New York, who de. Clares that Walker’s aims will yet be ac
complished, makes it more interesting than
at first glance appears,
The Times’ Washington correspondent
telegraphs that the Nicaraguan Minister no. tified the State Department that a plot exists in the Southern States to invade Cen. tral America, for the purpose of extending
. . Slavery, ander the auspices of a powerfa!
. combiuation, of which Walker was simply
. @n agent,
. A farther instalment ofthis news is sup. plied by the Diario dela Marina of Havana.
. It will be taken cum grand salis: Walker
. Was not working on his own aceount. in
. Honduras, but was the agent of an Ameri. can association, whose motto is the “Knights
of the Southern States,’ and with which he
. Was in constant communication through a
. Mr. Fayssoux. His project was to form.
with the help of a few inhabitants of Ruatan, known already to the inhabitants of
Truxillo, an independent State of the part
of the Republic of Honduras, and to annex
it tothe American Union, The new State
would have contained the Bay Islands, and
the whole part of the coast ‘of Honduras.
from Panta Catilla to Omoa. Walker would
have been, of course, placed at the head of
the new Government. And if, by the intervention of the Britishers, the plan was to
fail, Walker did not think that all expenses
incurred should be lost on that account, for
he hoped. that in a few hours, he could capture on the Bay Islandsand on the northern
coast of Honduras, from three to four hundred negroes, and send them to New Orleans and other Southern cities, to be sold
there as slaves, and indemnify persons who
had advanced money for the expedition,
It is stated by a correspondent of a southern paper that several United States Senators were implicated in the plot, to regain
possession of Nicaragua, and thut subseriptions have been privately collected in al. mostevery Southern city for Walker’s aid,
Lately it has leaked out that Walker had
an agent in St. Louis, enlisting men and
trying to collect money, The want otf
money was the principal cause of failure,
probably. Any number of men could have
been enrolled in the South West, bat the
lack of means to take them to Honduras
was an obstacle that could aot be overcome.
Walker’s ultimate intentions are not prob. ably known,
tial pilcet
TvoLumne County.—By the reports of the
County Assessor it appears that there were
. taised in that county during the past year
3,440 bushels of wheat; 1,985 busbels of
. barley; 210 busbels of oats; 68 acres of
coru; 7 acres of peas; 21,941 bushels of potatoes; 5 acres of onions; 2,019 tuns of
hay; besides all the products of 67,029 fruit
trees, and 171,172 grape vines, inclading
4,280 gallons of wine, and 1,800 gallons of
brandy, on all of which no tax was levied!
Surely the farmers and ranchers have little
to complain about, when all their products
go free _of taxes, while ditches, fluming
companies and miners pay so heavy a tax
upon all they possess, inclading the gold
the miners have taken out of their claims.
I, also appears that the total number ot
tom streams farnished by all the ditches in
the county, amount to 1098, and that the
ditch property is assessed at $375,700.
Showing that each tom stream is assessed
