Lt TE A THE PASSING CLOUD. O cloud, so beautiful and fleet, V’assing where fierce suns burn and beat, O'er hights untrod by human feet! Chameleon cloud, of iris hue, As changeful as a drop of dew, How many shapes in moments few! A car, a globe, a golden gloom, How many forms thou dost assume! A mountain, pyramid or tomb. So many shapes beneath the sun, So many dyes that fusing run; And beauty still in every one. Tinged with the hue the rainbow cast On snow-peaks, where their jmage fast Fades down before the scowling blast. Such golden light the young moon threw Upoa the still drops of the dew, What time the night-wind fresher blew. Such lustre water-lilies throw Upon the brook that lies below, Lipping their blossoms with its flow. T’ would make a brain-sick painter pine ‘Yo win a hue to match with thine To make his martyr’s mantle shine, In such a cloud the angels seek The hermit on the granite peak So pale, so humble, and so meek, Such cloud when Jesus, long ere day, Has sought the mountain top to pray, A halo round him seemed to play. _ aRALEMONUNE NCES MANE ENE RRR: A Drafting Excursion. —bas recently been said of drafting in this State, we are reminded of ap excursion of « couple of members of the late Stockton Blaes—Jimmy R——and a friend almost as ripe as he is for mischief. Some months ago the two, with the Blues’ uniform on, having a large political handbill containing a spread eagle, folded in such a maoner that nothing but the eagle could be seen, started in the country to try their hand at drafting. Where they thought they could make no impression, they said nothing and eoon left, but at one house they met a subject. The eagle part of the handbill was exhibited, and they imparted the important information that they were Government agents and were drafting men for the army. Their victim had heard nothing of ch a eall for soldiers, He was asked if he k the papers. He eaid ‘‘no;’’ and R——said no wonder he “hadn’t heard the news.” cesar nc CCE IO ECT CLE TRC AO The man begged to be let off, and his wife . commenced entreating that her husband should be let alone; that he was the only sopport of the family that would starve without him; and as a last resource pointed to a house in sight, telling them to go there for a soldier for the fellow who lived there was “no account” and would be “no loss to the neighborhood,’”’ R——and bis friend finally pretended to be prevailed upon by the entrcaties of the distressed couple, and took the good woman’s advice and started for the house pointed oat to them. The fellow there was informed that he was thus waited upon to be drafted, and the big eagle was exhibited with considerable display. The wife asked a few questions, and, entertaining no suspicion, she advised ber husband to start! But to this he demurred. She told him, however, that she could get along without him, and ‘‘maybe’’ she “would have better luck after he was gone!”’ —— wrote his name down on a book, and told him they would waita short time for him to get rendy. But be had a thousand excuses, all of which were promptly met by his wife, ina manner to show they were trifling reasons, He finally said he hada sore leg, “That won’t burt him for'a soldier a bit,” said his better half; ‘he’s jest the fellow fora cavalry soldier, for. it won’t . hurt his leg at all to ride.’ The various shifts the fellow resorted to, to get off, and the determination exhibited by his wife that he should go, were finally such that) R—— and his friend had to retreat to hide their laughter that could no longer be re. strained at the ludicrous scene. They started off, promising to call again. The man looked but balf satisfied, fearing another visit, while the wife appeared deeply chagrined that she could not deliver up ber husband to her country’s call. They had not gone far, when they heard the woman coming after them, exclaiming “you had better take my husband along, ee he’ll beat me to death, to-night, if you leave him here!’ They returned to the house, and threatened him with being made a soldier, “gure,’’ if they heard be had whipped his wife. He promised not to “tuuch her.” The difference between the two wives afforded food for reflection, broken with peals of laughter, to the two Blues who were Pre to draft soldiers!”—[Stockton Democra * Tae Unperstanpine or tus Repe.s.— The Shoe and Leather Reporter publishes statistics to prove that the Southerners are not yet as bad off for shoesas has been represented. It shows that during the past three-quarters of the present year a sufficient number of brogans went South to sr ao army of four hundred thousand men for twelve months, and allow three pairs to cach man.
