Lower CaLirornia.—A correspondent of
the Los angeles Star, writing from San
Diego, October 24th, says:
Warlike prevarations are again being
made iu Lower California, The cause is
said to be a report circulated here about a
week ago, that Eeparsa, late Governor of
Lower California, was iu Los Angeles raising men for the purpose of overthrowing
the present Government, and reinstating
himself in authority down there. An exodus of the people, not unlike that of the
Israelites from Egypt, is now taking place
from that country ioto this and adjoining
They are said to be in a good state of discipline, and well supplied with the needful
sinews of war, under the management of
the present Governor.
Taking these reports as granted, we may
look for some stirring war news from that
section soon,
Tae Coat Freip In Wasuaor.—lIt has recently been found that the coal indications
extend to the north and south of the original Whitman claim, a distance of two or
three miles, making the entire range over
which good signs are met with fully five
miles long, and about two and a balf wide.
Quite a number of claims have lately been
surveyed for different parties along El Dorado canon, thongh we do not hear that any
genuine vein has yet been struck in that
vicinity. The heaviest deposit so far discovered is on Col. Whitman’s grounds, tho’
several other claims adjoining his on the
north gone equally well. The report
of coal having been found in the Flowery
Districs, started a short time since, seems
to lack confirmation ; though the Whitman
coal field evidently stretches that way, and
. the article will probably yet be found in
that district, at a greater depth than on the
elevated lands further south.—(Silver Age,

Port Royal Entrance and Beaufort, .
The latest news tells that our fleets were
bombarding at these two points. Port Royal Entrance is the entrance to Broad River,
between Port Royal Island, on whieh
Beaufort is located, and the main land,
and is also the entrance to Beaufort river,
which empties into Broad river. The town
of Beaufort is located at the head of navigation on Beaufort river, and is about eixteen miles from the sea. Itis the main
town of the Beaufort district, South Carolina—the most southern seaboard district
of that State—and in 1850 bad a white population of 879 persons. There are three
channels over the bar at the mouth of
Broad river, as shown by the Coast Survey
of 1855. The bar is some ten miles from
the headlands, The east channel has seventeen feet of water at mean low tide; the
southeast channel, nineteen feet at mean
low tide, andthe south channel nineteen
feet aleo ; while beyond that, all the way
up to Beaufort, the river has not less than
fifteen feet. This depth would permit the
largest vessels to enter at high water.—
Thereisa fine supply of excellent fresh
water near the junction of Beaufort river
with Broad river. The Charleston and Savannah railroad runs inland about fifteen
miles from Beaufort, and there isa good
country read from Beaufort to it, the distance thereby being some eighteen miles,
The entire length of the railroad from
Charleston to Savannah is 104 miles, and
the Beaufort county road will strike it
about two-thirds of that distance from
Charleston. This railroad links onto all
the other railroads in the South,
Inside the bar the harbor is very fine, and
that, in conneetion with complete possession of Port Royal Island or St. Helena Island, which fe still nearer the sea, might be
made a fine basie of operations against the
rebellious cities of Charleston and Savannah, The news of the fleet hovering on
their coast has startled the South Carolinians and Georgians, and they are running
hither and thither to meet it, not knowing
where it may strike.—[Sac. Bee.

of saltin the South are ineorreet. It is
supposed that the South is entirely dependent upon the North or foreign importation
for its supply of this necessary substance,
but this is not the case, Next to New York
Virginia makes the greatest quantity of salt
annually of any State io the Union, The
amount manufactured by New York is
5,503,447 bushels per annum: by Virginia,
3,650,000 bushels, by Florida, 70,000. Salt
is mavufactured in eleven States, the total
product being 13,388,447 bushels. But as
that is not quite half the amount that is required for use, we import 14,094,227 bushels, of which 10,335,256 came from England.

—A new French pampblet, entitled The

protests that France does not want the
Rhine; that consequently Germany has
nothing to fear from her; but, as regards
the Vistula, it argues that Russia bas designs in that direction, and France merely
watches ber opportunity to guard herself
against Russia. Germany should encourage a reconstruction of Poland. The pamphlet is regarded asan effort to propitiate
the King of Prussia on bis approaching
visit and allay the apprebension of Germapy.
