The two Hose Companies of this place, and the Grass Valley . and Nevada Hook & Lsdder Companies, paraded the streets this afternoon, in their uniforms, . and with their hose carriages etc., making a fine appearance, and eliciting the plaudits and admiration of the citizens. The occasion of the parade was to dedicate the new house re. cently erected on Broad street, by the Protection Hook and Ladder Co. The Companies met on Main street, and preceded by the Ne-. vada and Grass Valley Bands, marched up Main and Commercial streets to the junction of Broad, down Broad tothe Protection Co’s. house, where photographs were taken from two different points by Mon. A. Liebert, the daguerrean artist. The carriages, and truck of the Hook and Ladder Co,, were beautifully decorated with wreaths, bouquets and flowers, and as the procession passed down Broad sttect a magnificent wreath was thrown to Pennsylvania Hose Co. No 2, from the baleony of the Democrat office, which was received with! cheers by the Company and soon added to the decorations of their carriage. After marching through the principal streets, the procession repaired to the Protection Co’s. house, where they were addressed by Judge Searls, of the Nevada Hook & Ladder Co., and A. B. Dibble, of the Grass Valley company. They then repaired to the Bailey House, and partook of a collation of crackers and champaign, and made themselves hoarse by cheering. The machines have been newly painted and lettered, and make a splendid appearance. Everything passed off pleasantly, and the people of Nevada have just cause to be proud of their Fire Departmen}. Lectvunes.—Mrs. Adaline M. W. Weed gives notice that she will deliver a course of three lectures at the Methodist chruch, in this place, on “Woman.” ‘The first lecture will be given on Friday evening next, to which both gentlemen and ladies will be admitted. The other lectures are intended for ladies alone, and will be delivered on Saturday and Monday next, at half past two p. M.—admittanee, fifty cents . each, Mrs. Weed’s lectures have been highly complimented by the press in different parts of . the State; she is said to be a lady of great intellectual ability, and thoroughly educated in . medical science. The lectures will be illustrated and rendered entertaining by a splendid set of physiological plates, life size. County Hosrtran.—By the report of the . County Physician, for the quarter ending November 4th it appears that the whole number of patients treated during the quarter was 64. . Of this number, twenty-six were discharged cured; seven were discharged relieved; one left . of his own accord, one was removed by friends, and three died—leaving twenty-six in the hos. pital at the date of the report.. This number . has been reduced to twenty-three since the re. port was made out. The total expense of the . hospital for the quarter was $2,540, which is some three or four hundred dollars more than . the average cost per quarter. . County Suprervisors.—The Board of Supervisors completed the canvass of the election returns yesterday; were engaged to-day in ex. amining and auditing accounts, and will act on . petitions to-morrow. They will finish up the . business of the term to-morrow or next day. . The next regulas session of the Board will be . held on the first Monday in February, at which . time Mr. Sheets will take the place of Dr. Davis, as Supervisor of the second district, and . Mr. Everett will succeed as President of the Board. Brancu Jari.—The citizens of North San . Juan have petitioned the Board of Supervisors . to establish a branch jail in that place. It is. alleged that such an institution would be a/ great convenience to the officers, and save the county considerable expense. ‘The petition has not yet been acted on. deeninniegiiaseittinbiiinb~entepaaietatnicstte A Pacivic Rerosiic.—The Placerville Galiforniansays : It is not known to many, that the subject of a Pacific Republic is being daily discussed iu private circles, aod even favored . by those who have held and who now bold . high official positions, Some of these latter, bave declared openly in the presence of . the writer— First, That since the election of Lincoln by one section of the Union, the South will, aud ought to secede. Second, . That they, as Catiforuians, desire the seces. sion, and in that connection, openly declare for a Pacilic Republic. These expressions may be attributed somewhat to the excitement of the moment, but we hear them announced as the deliberate sentiments of prominent meu who have not that excuse, Iu view of what is now transpiring in the Cotton States, these expressions assume a magnitude, which otherwise they would not possess, Pixe’s Peax,—Clark, Gruber & Co.,. bankers at Pike’s Peak, estimate the gold yield of that region for the current year, at about $5,000,000. Great numbers of miners were leaving for the States and Mexico.to pass the winter. Gen, Jo. Lanz.—A New York letter writer, passing along the streets of Baltimore, a short time ago, saw a haggard, care-worn looking old gentleman sitting on a door step with his head resting on his hands, and weeping mest bitterly. Being of a tender heart, be kindly approached the old man and asked him why he sorrowed and wept. Raising his bead slowly, the old man developed to our astonished newspaper ‘cuss’? . the venerable head and wrinkled visage of General Lane, “A! my poor country! oh, my suffering country!” eaid he, and again he boobooed and went off into anothem paroxysin of sorrow, Bie Trees.—In 1542, Gonzalo Pizarro, exploring the equinoxial region of South America, discovered trees so large that sixteen men could barely encompass one of them with extended arms. Allowing six feet for the spread of a man’s arms, this . would make the tree 96 feet in cireumferevee and 32 feet in diameter, four feet from . the ground—as large as the Calaveras Big . Tree. Humboldt mentions a tree at Oaxuca which was 112 feet in cireumference— . So our big trees . over 37 feet in diameter, are not the largest in the world.
