The editor of a recent edition of Lady lary Wortley Montague’s Letters gives the Mowing account of the Earl of Pembroke -. great oddity of a hundred years ago: , Marrying for the third time at seventyfive, he maintained strict dominion over a wife, whom other people thought safely arrived at yéars of discretion, aod quite fit to take care of berself. She bad leave to visit in an evening, but must vever, on any account, stay outa minute later than tea o'clock, bis supper hour, Oae night, bowever, she stayed till past twelve. He declined suppiog, telling the servants it could not be ten o’clock, as their lady was not come home, When at last she came ina terrible fright, and began paris a thousand apologies, “My dear,” said he, very coolly, “you are under a mistake, it is but just ten; your watch, I see, goes too fast, aod so does mine; we must havo the man to-morrow to set them to rights; meanwhile let us go to supper,” His example on another occasion might be worth following. Of all the Mede-aodPersian luws established in his house, the most peremptory was, that ony servant who once got drunk should be instantly dis charged, 00 pardon granted and no excuse listened to, Yet an old footman, who had lived with him many years, would sometimes indulge in a pot of ale extraordinary, trusting to the willful blindness whieh he saw assuined when convenient. One fatal day even this could not avail. As my lord crossed the hall, John appeared in full view; not rather tipsy, or a little disguised, but dead drunk and unable to stand, Lord Pembroke weot up to him. “My poor fellow what ails you? you seem dreadfally ill —let me feel your pulee. God bless me, he is in a raging fever; get him to bed directly aud send for the apothecary.”’ The apothecary came, not to be consulted, for bis lordship was physician-general in his own family, but to obey ordera—to bleed the patient copiously, clap a buge blister on his back, and give hima powerful dose of physic, After a few days of this treatment when the fellow emerged weak and wan as the severest illness could have left him, ‘Ha, honest John,” oried his master, “I am truly glad to see thee alive; you have had a wonderful esoape though, andjought to be thankful, indeed. Why, man, if I had not passed by and spied the condition you were in, you would have been dead before now. But Jobat Joho!” (lifting up his finger,) ‘no more of these fevers,” — a aa s Practioan Purosoruy.—A great philosopher says in one of bis letters: “I have told you of the Spaniard who always put on spectacles when he was about to eat cherries, that they might look bigger and more tempting. the most of my enjoyments; and though I do not cast my cares away, I pack them in as little compass as IT can, aud carry them as conveniently as I can for myself, and never let them annoy others,” _— Anorent Famriies.—It is related of the French family of tne Duke de Levis, that they bavea picture of their chateau in whioh Noab is represented as going into the ®k,and carrying under his arm a small trunk, on which is written, “Papers belonglog the Levis family.” here isa family in Wales, whose archieves say, (about the middle of the pediGrea, & ut this time the world was crea Tue Ruuine Passton.—A poor fellow, who must have been an inveterate joker, lately committed suicide in Massachusetts, and left the following note to his wife: “Dear Mary, if I am not at home to-night inquire of Abrabam where I am—if not found in his bosom, he'll kaow where I’ve boys at in the woods, who had heard that secession fore commenced by executio upon himself. vader, and gave a history of himself, concluding by saying: In like manner, I make .
