~ Tue MORRISSEY AND Heenan Fieutr.—The
gteat prize fight between Morrissey and Heenan, excited unusual interest among sporting
circles, inevery section of the country. Reporters were prescnt from Boston, Cincinnati,
Philadelphia, and from al! the leading dailies
of New York. It is estimated that over halfa
million of money changed hands on the result
—bets having been made in every part of the
United States, and even in Havana. The Baffalo Courier, in describing the fight says:
“So far as the condition of the men were-concerved, Morrissey was infiuitely superior, as
Heenan has been confined to the house of a
friend on Caritun street, in this city, since Saturday fast to Tuesday evening, and under the
care of Dr. Geo. Burwell. To this, and the
breaking of Heenan’s left band in the first
round, Morrissey owes his success. The fight is
admitted to be the most territic of any which
has taken place in thiscountry. Morrissey was
in fact whipped in the first round, bat did not
scem conscivus of it. He isa tremendous fighter, and has experience in the ring, baving
fought with Yaukee Sullivan, while the Benicia
Boy, on the contrary, bas nu acquaintance or
experience of this kind, having not only uever
fought iu the ring. but never seea @ prize fight.
The ability and game which he showed in this
fight, under very unfavorable circumstances,
has convinced his friends of his great power,
and they are now willing to back him against
Morrissey or any other man in the world, for
any sam from $5,000 to $20.000.”"
Another journal says :
“In the first round, Heenan struck a blow
which would bave tinished the fight, bad not
Morrissey dodged, so that Heeuan struck a
stake, breaking his hand badly. A clinch then
took place, and Morrissey was thrown, Heenan
falling heavily on him. Heenan’s blows and
sparring were decidedly superior, bat upon
calling time for the twelfth round, he did not
come up. and Morrissey was declared victor.
The friends of Heenan are contident that he is
a ‘better man’ than his antagonist, excusing his
defeat on the grounds already mentioned.”
INDEPENDENCE OF RePresentaTives.—An idea
of the unscrupulous manner in which the power of the administration was wielded for bad
purposes during the last session of hair, .
may be gathered from the following extract from .
a speech of Senator Douglas, delivered recently
at Alton. We find the extract in the Union:
This Democratic Administration, whom we
brought into power-.-this Administration places
its power and patronage in favor of Lincoln
against the Democratic party. I have no personal differences with Buchanan or his Cabinet.
Mr. Buchanan made a certain position on the
Leeompton question, I disagreed and he told
me if I did nut go with him every friend of mine
should luse their heads—and this warfare was
made on me because I would not prove recreant
to my prineiples and my constituency, in the
Senate of the United States. The Senate and
the President are independent. Whenever you
give to the Pre. ident the power to say to a S-nator that unless be docs this or does that be will .

Hores ror tuk ATLaNtic Cante.—The London Daily News, received by the Europa at Halifax. Oct. 20th, has an editorial upon the cable,
in which strong hopes are expres=cd of its being rendered available in a short time. It says
that Professor Thomp<on has nearly succecded
in neutralizing the effects of earth currente,
which become perplexing when the currents
through the catle are so weak, Professor
Hughes bas so modified his printing apparatus
that a current of voltaic electricity, generated
by a small iron wire being held in one hand,
moistened with water, while a copper wire of
the same size is held in the other, the two wires
being united to form acircuit, is sufficient in intensity to make bis machine print an_ intelligible message. So sensitive is his mew instrument that it will still print correetly, though a
weak current ag weak as we have described is
diminished still more in intensity, by passing
through the bodies of four individuals With
the combined improvements and inventions of
Professors Thompson, Hughes and Henley, we
are not without hope that. as soon as their instruments ean be conveyed across the Atlantic,
electric communication will be once more restored.
Cauirorxta Grapes In New Yorx.—The New
York correspondent of the Boston Journal, writing Oct. 16th, says:
There was a great arrival to-day at the Astor
House of California grapes. Several boxes
came up in the steamer, and the excellence of
the fruit and the good condition in which it arrived indicate that the grape trade must yet be
an important one with the Pacific State, The
grapes were gathered from the open fields, and
for richness of flavor and size are not to be excelled by the best Hamburg grapes in the market.
Tye Tantre.—-A Washington correspondent
of the New York Tribune says the Administration bas not definitely settled on any tariff pulicy. Secretary Cobb resiste the principle of
nrotection, but efforts are making on @ compromise to that effect. Congress to pass a law
authorizing the Seeretary of the Treasury to
raise the duties on certain epecifie schedules as
may be determined on, provided the tariff of

Dear Sin :—In December, 1850, I passed through a very
