t : } NUTTING TIME, The nuts are ripe and the day is fine, The purple hills in the sunlight shine, And the brown nuts redden the trembling tops Of each gnarled tree in the hazel copse. The copse is filled with the happy noise Ot laughing girls and climbing boys, ‘And the beaten branches yield their fruit That heavily drops at each old tree’s root. Under the brow of the copse-crowned hill, Ethel and I sit silent and still, ‘And [ hold in mine her small white hand, The smallest and whitest in all the land. Gather your fiuit, ye lads above, And fling the nuts at the girls you love; The only fruit that to me was dear I have gathered to-day in the white hand here. Wuar was Leatxep From THe Late Ecuirse,—The solar eclipse ot July 17th, 1860 was more thurougbly observed than any other that ever occurred, In addition to the great number of trained observers who were scattered along the line of its path, from the State of Oregon to Egypt, the new art of astronomical photography: Jent its powerful aid towards obtaining a complete history of the phenomena, In former total eclipses, when the sup was completely hidden by the moon, while still brighter objects, appearing like protuberances, were seen extending into the corona, there bad been much discussion among astronomers in regard to these appearances, some believing that they were produced by the action of the earth’s atmosphere on the son’s light, others attributing them to the moon, and others still to the sun. Hopes had been for some time entertained that the eclipse of this year would afford observavations which would settle these questions, There hopes have not been disappointed. The corona is a luminous atmosphere of the sun, brighter than the face of the moon, gradually becoming fainter as the distance from the sun increases, till it fades away io the sky without any defined limits, bat vis. ible at least 500,000 leagues from the body of the sun, The red protuberances are luminons floating clouds, floating in the shining atmosphere, all of them pretty near the surface of the sun, It fs a curious fact that some of these clouds impressed their image . on the photographic paper, though they could not be seen through with powerfal telescopes. This fact is explained on the supposition that they may have emitted a deep violet light mostly composed of chemical rays. The application of photography to observation of the heavenly bodies was first made by our American astronomers, & fact admitted by the English and Freach. Curiosities FROM OREGoN.—On the ocean beach of Oregon, between Port Orford and Coove Bay, the eurf is continually casting up little rows of variegated stones, prettily rounded by the action of the sand and water and exhibiting all the hues of gems, They average the size of common beans, and are generally transparedt, scintillating in the sunlight with the colors of the ruby, the sapphire,-the amethyst and the emerald. Sometimes a perfectly round one is found, of an amber color, and clear as glass. After a beavy gale they may be gathered by the bushel, It is somewhat singular that these stones are only to be found along a stretch of coast about twenty miles in length. Ina glass dieh, partly filled with water, and placed where the sun can strike obliquely upon them, they reflect a variety of beautifal rays, and create s miniature rainbow, or a combination of light resembling one, in their effects. Most of the beach minersin the locality referred to bave gathered quantities of them, among which, with the bope ever inseparable from the life of the miner, they are willing to imagine that gems may yet be found. At any rate, these may hereafter become rivals of the agate. and stones of that class, generally used for inferior jewelry. Preyrice on uts Aae.—-Prentice, of the Louisville Journal, in noticing an article which recently appearedin the Philadelphia Press, on the Veterans of American Journalism, takes occasion to say: ‘Our friend is right in saying that we are not an old man. We are not yet in the winter of life, nor even in the late autumn, but somewhere, we should say, in the early part of September. Reckoning lifeas a day, instead of a year, ours is about 1 o’clock, P. Irregularities, and all improper diseharges ot both . sexes, It matters not from what cause the disease originated, however long standing or obstinate the case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has baffled the skill of eminent physicians and resisted all their means of . cure. The medicines prescribed are pleasant, without odofyentirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and free froma mercury or Balsam. During fifteen years of practice, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many thousands, who, in the last stages of the above men tioned diseases, had been given up «odie by their physicians, which warrants me in promising to the affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, a perfect and speedy cure, Private diseases are the greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause of Consumption, Scrofula, and many other diseases, . and should be a terror to the human family. A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected, a majority of the eases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but ruin the constitution, filling the system with mercury, . which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid consumption. / But should the disease and the treatment not cause death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble . constitutions, and'the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, . throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief exis tance of suffering, and consigning them to an early grave. Seur-Apvse is another formidable enemy to health, for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes so destructive a drain upon the system, drawing its thousands of vietims through a few years of suffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the proper developement of the system, disqualifies for marriage, society, business, and all earthly happiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train of evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims . of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy cure can . be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous . practices my patients can be restored to robust, vig. orous health. .
