THE ARSENAL AT SPRINGFIELD. RY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW. This is the Arsenal. From floor to ceiling Like a huge organ rise the burnished arms; Lint from the silent pipes no anthem pealing Mtartles the villagers with strange alarns Ah what a sound will rise, how wild and dreary, When the death-angel touches those swift keys! What loud lament and dismal misery Will mingle with their awful symphonies! J hear even now the infinite fierce chorus, The cries of agony, the endless groan, Which, thro’ the ages that have gone before us, In Jong reverberation reach our own. On helm and harness rings the Saxon hammer, Thro’ Cimbrie forest roars the Norseman s song, And loud, amid the universal clamor, O'er distant deserts sounds the Tartan gong. 1 hear the Florentine, who from his palnce Wheels out his battle bell with dreadful din; And Artec priests upon their teoeallis, Beat the wild war-drums, made of serpent’s skin. The tumult of each sacked and burning village: The shout that every prayer for mercy drowns; The soldier’s revels in the midst of pillage; The wail of fomine in beleagured towns; The bursting shell, the gateway wrench’d asunder; The rattling musketry, the clashing blade; , And ever and anon, in tones of thunder, The diapason of the cannonadle. Is it, O man, with such discordant noises, With such accursed instruments as these, Thou drownest Nature’s sweet and kindly voices, And jarrest the celestial harmonies? Were half the power that fills the world with terror, Were half the wealth bestowed on camps and courts Given to redeem the human mind from error, There were no need of arvenals and forts. Down the dark future, through long generations, The echoing sounds grow fainter then ceare; And like « bell, with solemn, sweet vibrations, I hear onee more the voice of Christ say “Peace,” Peace! and no longer from its brazen portals ‘The blast of Was’s great organ shakes the skies! But beautiful as songs of the immortals, The holy melodies of love arise. A Reverenp Sea Carrain.—The San Francisco Pacific says: Two or three weeks ago we bad the pleasure of meeting the Rev. C. H. Barret commanding the clipper ship ©. F, Willets, A minister—a sea captain! A rare enough sight. We inferred that he must follow the sea for his health. No, not for his health, but for the gospel’s sake. He follows the sea to preach to the sailors, and to show to the world that when sailors are treated like human beings they act and work, * * * Every Sabbath he holds public service, and preaches to all on board, Every day prayers are held at 4, rp. M., twice a week, meetings for religious conference and prayer; once a week a bible class, of which he ts the leader; a mutual improvement circle twice a week and once a week a seaman’s prayer meeting, conducted wholly by themselves, He takes boys and educates them for the service; teaches them both the theory and practice of navigation, These boys are taken at a certain age, and kept under his special supervision, and room separately from the men, so that the vicious in the forecastle are kept in some measure from exerting their, pernicious influenee over them. On the voyage from New York to San Francisco there were five conversions, While in port he bad more applications from seamen than he needed, and one paid a bonus of $5 to another to let bim go in his ‘stead. Tue Game or Bituiarns.—Mr, Doesticke thus deseribes, in the Sunday Mercury, the game of billiards: I need hardly tell you that the game of billiards consists in punching ivory balls about on a big table, covered with green vloth, that looks like half an ere of meadow land, with an India rabber fence around it; that the batls are punched with long wooden ramrods, with wax on the end to save the wood, and leather put on to save the wax, and ehalk put on to keep the leather from wearing out, You take your ramrod and rub some chalk on the little end; then you lean over the table; then you squint; then you lift up your leg; then yeu tiddle a little on your Jolt hand with your ramrod; then you punch your ball; if your ball runs againet the other man's ball, you've done a big thing, and you poke up a lot of buttons that are strang on a wire, This is all there is of the game of billiards, Anybody can punch billiards—I can, and maybe you could, NSOLVENT NOTICH.—In the District Court of the 14th Jadicial District of the State of California, in the matter of the petition of CLARK GREGORY, an Insolvent Debtor: Pursuant te an order of the Hon, Niles Searls, Judge of the said Diatrict Court, Notioe is hereby given to all the ereditors of the said Insolvent, Clark Gregory, to be and .ppear before the Hon, Niles Searls, “aforesaid, in open Court, at the Court room of said Court, in the city and county of Nevada, on the 14th day of Dee. s. Private diseases are the greatest enemies to health, a= they are the first cause of Consumption, Serofula, and many other diseases, and should be a terror to the buman family, A permanent cure is scarceby ever effected, a inajority of the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, Who. not only fail to cure the disease, but ruin the constitution, filling the system with mercury, which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a yapid consumption. Bat should the disease and the treatment not cause death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in acrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, throat and lungs,, entailing upon them « brief existance of suffering, and consigning them to an early grave.
