I9 THIS A FACT? The officers of the regular army, bowever much they may love the Union, do not, as abody, love the present Government. Oa the contrary, they regard the greatest number of the Cabinet with aversion, and detest their principles, It is hard for men to fight for a cause with a good heart, and at the same time hold in contempt those who have that cause in band for the moment. M’CLELLAN’S POPULARITY WITH THE ARMY, To-day there were two alarms, the first about two o’clock. One wascreated by firing across the river, which died away, and proved to befrom the guns in the works, which it wasdeemed desirable to reload. About 4 o’clock the noise of a cannooade upthe river toward the Chain Bridge roused every one again, and, in spite of therain and the threatening weather, the people got on the house-tops, Gen. MeClellan and his staff rode at full speed to the bridge, which is about five miles distant, but before they arrived the affair was over, and the General arrived only to hear the cheers of the troops returning from the field. I never heard in America more enthusiastic and vigorous cheering than marked their return tocamp, and their reception of the General, who has evidently become most popular with his men in spite or in consequence of his strictness. THE STAIN OF MANASSAS, It would be a curious but not a gratefal task to cull the flowers of rhetoric in the wide-spread garden of abuse, accusation and invective, thatspring upall over the States in reference tothat same retreat from Manasgas, When the stain is to be effaced it is not possible to say, but I am diepoeed to think Gen. McClellan will do it when he does move, if his troops are properly led by their regimental officers.
