Set Seer t ee ~ 7 Give me back the days of old— The days ar honest Inbor When man to man was frank and free, ‘And would not wrong his neighbor. hen men were not ashamed to work Viel cultivate the noil Seeking no other boon than that Which follows evrnest toil. AVhen truth and right and honest real Gave all their proper station; And justice weighed in truthful scales, ‘And wisdom ruled the nation, yur soldiers they were brave and true, And neither crest nor shield Was needed then, to make them men, In bivoune or in field. But let us not forget to pay ‘The tribute due to others; Aud while we sing of men of old, God bless our ancient mothers, And let us pray that come what may, The charming days of old, When right was might, and honor bright Was valued more than gold. Tux Course ov Tavs Love, ere.—The Sau Andreas Independent farhisbes the following romance io real life : Jose Oustro, a descendant of the Aztecs, aud wnother Castro, descended from the rich blood of Peru, bud been quarreling for several weeks about a dark eyed daughter of Chilé, named Mercedes, who lodged and boarded with Castro No, 1, at Columbia, It appears that Castro No, 2, by some iusinuating arts had worked upow the affections of the woman, aod induced her to abscond from the domicil of No. 1, and take refuge at Mokeluinne Hill under tke protection of No, 2, whereat Joe first waxed exceedingly deepondeat, taking broken doees of stryebuine, to oppose and end bis troubles, But the doctors interfered and death was cheated out of a victim, ‘ On recovering, the indomitable spirit of the Aztec blood showed itself, and Castro number one swore that be would sacrifice his rival and the false Mercedes at one aod the sawe time, To thisend be prepared himself with a six-shooter, and watched bis chances, Last Monday he started out from Upper Calaveritas with the avowed inten tion of making a riddle of the Peravian’s carcase “on sight.’ ‘I'be latter being luckily forewarned, was of course forearmed, aud as soon as the twain met, which wae on the road vear Calaveritas, the campaign opened briskly. Five or six shots were fired, Disconsolate Aztec was strack io the neck, whereby his windpipe was severed, and blood flowed like water; but still he advanced upon ouinber two, shooting as long as he could see the enemy, who retreated rapidly, receiving only a slight seratch on the arm, The wounded man is ina fair way not to recover, and number two, who gave himself up, was, of course, acquitted. Tae Siciwtan Nosiniry,—A_ singular illustration of Sicilian pride and poverty, with its incidental aod inseparable meanness, once occurred to the writer of this article. He was walking with a brother officer on the Marina, at Palermo, during the high tide of the fashionable promenade in the cool of the evening. A nobleman of high ravk drove down ina very ancient and cumbrous vehicle, drawo by two patriarchal horses, with a coachman and three lacqueys of similar date, The whole turnout bad a most antedcluvian aspect; their chronology baffled calculation, The Dnke stepped ont, came up to us, took off his hav and literally begged for a dollar. As soon as we were recovered from our surprise, and clearly understood what he meant, and that he was applying on his own account, not as the agent of a charity, the general pretence when English milords are addressed, entered into conversation, The “illustrious prince” then became quite confidential, informing us frankly that he had a palace and establishment in addition to the equipage we saw, but no ways and means; not even ready cash enough to supply macaroni and water melons, He gave us so many “Kocelenza,’’ and so many complimente to England in general, and King George in Le garded that we in return bestowed on hima dollar each, our companion declaring that he didit for the fun of the thing; whereupon the noble mendicant skipped into his carriage, and vanished with the alacrity of the ghost of the disconsolate Miss Bailey in the song, when gratified with the unexpected one pound pote, We saw him again, soon after, in the Mall, exchanging bland salutes on all sides with hondreds of his order, many of whom had similar eqnipages, and revenues pervaps in the same flourishing condition. Joun M. Borrs, in his Richmond speech, rigged op the right of the States to secede as follows : If this power be admitted, Cuba can at once be purchased of Spain for three handred million do!lars; but after the purchase and the formation of a State Govern: ment, suppose Cuba secedes---what becomes of the three hundred millions? Tue Export or Corroy.—It is stated as a historical fact that the first export of cotton from this country to England, was in 1784, when a@ vessel arrived at Liverpool with eight bags of cotton, as part of a cargo. So unexpected was the arrival that the cotton was seized by the Customhouse off. cers under the conviction that it could not have been the growth of America. Democratic Parers.—In M issourl fortythree papers support Douglas and seventeen Breckinridge, decided to go with the first. Deata of a Texsvasee Heumir.—The MeMinville (Tenn.) New Era announces the death of Daniel West, the well known hermit of the mountains, atthe age of seventyeight. He had lived for a namber of years in the hollow of a large American poplar tree, ia the opening of whieh’be bad titted a rude door, In the centre of this bollow be would build bis fire in winter, aud for cooking bis plain meals, This hollow also served as his sleeping apartment, and it is said he slept in a sitting posture, reclining against the wall of bis house. ‘ae or near to this tree he bad a rade 6 which be used asa work sbop, where he manufactured cbairs, boxes, cider presser, &c. He was a North Carolivian by birth, and wag a soldier in the war of 1812 He was at the Mobile station when the battle of New Orlvang was fought, and heard the booming of the guns when bis old General was whipping the British, He married, it is said, in early life, a womau whose busband bad left her, and who was by her considered dead. They had one child, and lived together ingreat happiness and harmony. After the lapse of years the former busband returned aud claimed his wife. He told ber to make ber own choice; if sbe loved him mostto remain with him, and ebe should never repent il; if, however, she loved and preferred to go with ber . first busebaod, to do so, and be would never, blame her. She Daniel West was at that time in comfortable circumstances, bad a quantity of stock, and was adding to hie substance every year, After the desertion of the woman be loved, he became dejected, let bis property ron to roin, and finally adopted the strange and secluded life of a hermit in his tree. He lived in this way many pears, He did not do so from necessity (fo bad friends who besought bim to make their home his own) but from Rhoice. When questioned as to why he preferred such a mode of life, he only answered that “the world had not used him well.’ And yet be did not appear to be soured in bis disposition or embittered in his feelings towards it, Prentice on Yayory.—An Alabama paper expresses its belief that Mr. Yancey’s whole political life bas been a curse to the country, We believe so too. We don't wish Yancey dead, but we are sorry his mother didn’t refuse to have bis father, LOUIS CELARIE, JEWELLER & WATCH MAKER, COMMERCIAL STREET, NEVADA. Irregularities, and all improper discharges of both . sexes, It watters not from what cause the disease originated, however long standing or obstinate the . case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has baffled the skill of eminent physicians and resisted all their means of cure, The medicines preseribed are pleasant, without odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and free from mercury or balsam, During fifteen years of practice, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many thousands, who, in the last stages of the above men tioned diseases, ad been given up to die by their . physicians, which warrants me in promising to the affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, 4 . perfect and speedy cure. Private diseases are the . greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause . of Consumption, Scrofula, and many other diseases, and should be a terror to the human family. A _permanent cure is mae ever effected, a inajority of . the cases falling into the hands of incompetent per. sons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but ruin the constitution, filling the system with mercury, which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid consumption. But should the disease and the treatment not cause . death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is . entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble . constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, . throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief exis. tance of suffering, and consigning them to an early . grave. aif SeLr-Anuse is another formidable enemy to health, . for nothing élse in the dread catalogue of human Cis. eases causes 80 destructive a drain upon the system, . drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years . oft guffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys . the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the . proper developement of thé system, disqualifies for . marriage, socicty, business, and all earthly bappiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and . mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train ot evils more to be greaded than death itself, With the . fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate victims of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy cure can be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous practices my patients can be restored to robust, vigorous her lth, 1 larities, and all diseases of males and females, treated on principles established by fifteen years ol practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most . remarkable cures.
