A special dispatch from Washington to
the N. ¥. Commercial says that the New
Jersey brigade marched Saturday merning;
they will doubtless complete the preparations for preventing the passage of the rebela over into Maryland under cover of guns
of their Potomac batteries. The same letter says all the regiments of the army of
the Potomac have their camp equipments,
wagons, ambulances, horses, mules and
other appurtenances ready for taking the
field at an hour’s notice. The organization
of wagon trains has been one of the moat
difficult of taske,
The schooner Andromeda, from Savannab, reports that on October 3lst at sundown, off Hatteras, she saw a fleet of thirty
steamers but no sailing vessels bound south.
Six rifled cannon left Washington Nov.
4th for Gen. Sickles’ brigade. Their range
is said to be five and one fourth miles,
Crxcinnati, Noy. 4th.—The Commercial
has advices from Gen. Rosencranz’s bead
quarters up to Saturday evening, Nov. 2d,
On Friday morning at 8 o’clock, the enemy
opened fire with two guns from a point opposite Gauley Ferry and Camp Tompkins,
and a noisy fire of muskets, The object was
evident to cut off the supply trains. They
succeeded in sinking the ferry-boat on the
Gauley and threw about forty shells into
the camp of the llth Obio, but none of our
men were killed and only about balfa doz
en wounded, The majority of the enemy’s
shells did not explode, and their musketry
was wild aud irregular, The ferry-boat
which had been sunk by the enemy’s shot
on Friday was raised that night and comSE nication restored. There wasno firing

Col. Sedgewick of the 2d Kentucky regiment was reported wounded.

Circuit Court this morning, the case of the
pirate Petrel, was called, but postponed
. till next Monday. While the assistant Dietrict Attorney was urging the trial, Judge
Greer said: “He would not consent to have
. the regular business of the Court interrupted. It seemed like a farce to try prisoners
at the time when the country had civil war.
‘The dictates of humanity would counsel
. sea the same as though they were taken on
land, and be could not understand the poli‘ey of the Government holding the former
. rebelion be crushed, and God grant that it
. may be speedily, and then these men can
. be tried for treason or piracy.’”’ He would
assist, no matter how much he might be

Marsvite. Ky., Nov, 4th,—A messenger
arrived this evening, and reports that Geo.

A Gentleman of this city, from Gauly
Bridge, on Saturday morning, reports that
Floyd had cut a road around the hill where
Rosencranz was encamped, and was sbelling his camp. Rosencranz was returning
the fire, and had silenced two batteries, He
bas also sent a detachment up the new road
to attack him in the rear. He says Floyd
is completcly surrounded. No Federals
had been killed when the gentleman lef,
Aupany, N. Y., Nov. 4th.-—Thurlow Weed
aud Archbishop Hughes are about starting
for Europe, probably in the steamer Africa’
on Wednesday, to endeavor to couuteract
the operations of the Southern Commissioners to prevent recognition of the Soutbern
Confederacy. It is uaderstood Gen. Scott
goes out io the same steamer.
Gen. McClellan has been oceupied to-day
in aecertaining the strength, condition and
disposition of the army of the United States,
the command of which hae suddenly devolved upon him. He has called on the
War Department fora statement of the
whole estimate of material and how dietributed. He will be oecopied several days in
systemizing and arranging these matters,
so that the burden of the management of
the military affairs may be safely confided
to the Adjutant General’s offiee, and afford
the General an opportunity to devote bis
attention especially to the affairs of the army
of the Potomac, remaining under his immediate command.
The N. Y. Tribune’s dispatch says the
Resolute arrived at Washington last night,
Nov. 3d,and reports that several of our
soldiers bave been wounded by the shot and
shell from the batteries at Shipping Point.
By order of the War Department the
Provost Marshal of Alexandria bas been directed to suspend the exercise of the civil
functions he had recently performed, and to
dismiss all the civil cases which he has
taken cognieance of.
In the Supreme Court yesterday, the dis
tinguished member of Parliament and
Queen’s Counsel, Edwin James, was admitted to the bar, It is understood that he intends to make this city his home.
Government has contracted with partics
in Philadelphia for the construction of an
iron-clad steamship. and the keel has been
laid. The vessel will be 240 feet long, 78
feet beam, and 30 feet depth of hold—to be
armed with sixteen of the largest rifled
cannon,

. Hant, a prominent citizen of Chariton
/county, has arrived directly from Price’s
. headquarters, He left Price’s camp at Ne. osho on Wednesday morning, Oct. 23d.—
Price and McCulloeh were both in camp,
_haviog united their forces, making an army
. of 30,000 or 35,000 strong. Judze Hunt
thinks that Price had received a large sup. ply of clothing, medicines, etc., and some
arms. His rifled cannon had not reached
him, but were expected on Sunday nigbt.
[27th October.] They were en route under
charge, Gen. G. B, Clark who bad eent runners forward to announce his approach.
The Legislature was in session at Neosho,
but lacked four of a quorum: they were
expected.
Price gives out that he will make a stand
at Neosho, and await Fremont a reasonable
time. He expects to whip Fremont easy,
and then take up the line of march for St.
Louis, or Central Missouri, and go into
winter quarters,

Wasuineton, Nov, 34,—The Common
Council of Philadelphia presented to Gen.
McClellan, on Friday, a magnificent sword.
Gen. Stone senta flag of truce to Gen.
Evans at Leesburg, to inquire after the dieposition of prisoners taken at Ball’s Bloffe.
Evans replied that they were confined at
