«LOCAL MATTERS,
Homicipzs.—A Chinaman named Ah Sing
was shot about seven o'clock yesterday evening,
at the head of Broad street, by aman named
Henry Searls. The bullet took effect in the
right temple, entering the brain, and rendering
him insensible. He continued to breathe until
nearly twelve o’clock, when he expired. As
soon as the shot was fired, Searls started down
Broad street, and was arrested by officer Scott
and lodged in jail. A small sized Colt’s revolver, with all the barrels loaded, was picked
up near.where the Chinaman fell, and a small
derringer, which had evidently just been discharged, was found on the opposite side of the
street. Coroner Henry held an inquest on the
body of the Chinaman to-day, and from the evidence taken, it appears that the difficulty originated between Searls and a Chinawoman.
Searls accused the woman of stealing ten dollars from him, and declared his purpose of not
allowing her to leave the room until a policeman could be sent for to search her. Ah Sing
and other Chinese inmates went to the assistance of the woman and a scuffle ensued during
which Searls drew a revolver and struck Ah
Sing on the head, but the weapon was taken
from him, and he was forcibly ejected from the
house. Searls then drew a derringer and fired .
at Ah Sing, the ball taking effect as above
stated. The loaded revolver found on the spot
was shown to belong to Searls, and it appears .
Ah Sing had it in his hand when he fell.
Liprary Booxs.—Mr. Charles Marsh, du.
ring a recent trip to San Francisco, purchased .
a large number of books forthe Nevada Library,
which were received yesterday, and will be
ready for distribution among the members in
the course of a day or two. Among the works
purchased are the following: Explorations in
Equatorial Africa; Philip Thaxter; Tom Brown
at Oxford, 2 vols.; Buckle’s History of Civilization; St. Clair of the Isles; Seasons with the
Sea Horses; Thier’s History of the Consulate;
Coins, Medals and Seals; Carthage and her
Remains; Prince’s Visit; Counterparts; The
Microscope; Crooked Path; Trubner’s Guide to

.
District Court.—Judge Searls has adjourned the District Court until Friday next, .
the 4th inst., and in view of the probable va.
cancy in the office of Judge, the civil cases .
heretofore set for trial have been postponed in.
' definitely. ‘The murder case of Myersis set for .
Tuesday, the 8th. Judge Searls has gone to!
> Sacramento, it is understood, for the purpose .
ef consulting the Governor in regard to the ap.
pointment of some person to fillthe vacancy. .
_ Mr. J. I. Caldwell, the Union Democratic candidate for District Judge at the last election, .
and T. B, McFarland, who received a majority .
of the votes for the office, are understood to be .
_ applicants for the appointment. There is some
. doubt as to whether the late election for Dis-!
trict Judge was legal. Gov. Downcy was evi-.
_ dently of the opinion that this was not the year
for the election, for in the general election proclamation no mention was made of Judge of the .
l4th District.

A Startiinc CHanor.— When Mayor
Berrett, of Washington, was admitted to Fort
Lafayette, his hair and whiskers were of raven
hue. Since then they have faded gradually,
and now are almost white. At first it was believed that grief had produced the change; but
Mr. Berrett makes the assertion that his altered
appearance is occasioned by the lack hair dye.

on allthe threads. It is perfectly smooth, and con.

Grexnnorn, Aug. 25, 1861.
Terry & InvinG:—Sirs: I was induced to purchase .
some of your Machine Sewed Hose in consequence of
it being cheaper than other hose, and after having
used it for eight months, I am fully satiefieu that it .
is much more durable than that made by hand. This .
is very easily accounted for from the fact that the
. seams being perfectly straight and smooth there is .
less friction. I shall certainly recommend my friends
to purchase that in preference to any other. .
