Prarep Ovr.—Capt. Jonathan R. Davis,
the great revolver and bowie-knife fighter, who
has been sojourning in our town for a month
past, is at last about “played out.” The Captain claims to be the owner of a large tract of
land at Rio Vista, and his business here was to
induce families to migrate to that locality and
settle on his land. He made very liberal offers
to a number of our citizens. To one he proposed giving a new cottage, two or three town
lots and a smail farm : to another, a large farm
ander good cultivation, with good buildings and
well stocked; to another gentleman who had
failed in business, and was involved to a large
amount, he proposed to pay all his debts, and
advance an amount of money sufficient to establish him in an extensive liquor business at
Rio Vista. The Captain was a stranger in these
parts, and having neglected to bring with him
a letter of credit, or coin; he was compelled to
solicit little pecuniary favors in order to pay
his daily expenses, until the money he had sent
for should arrive. Among others to whom he
applied for money was Mr. C., who for the past
two years has been partly dependent upon charity, in consequence of injuries received in mining. Mr. C. had no money of his own; but upon the Captain’s promise to give him an amount
sufficient to place him above want, and appealing to him as a native of the same State—
South Carolina—Mr. C. borrowed seventeen
dollars of a friend, and loaned it to the “chivalric” son of Secessia. For atime, the Captain floated upon the surface of circumstances,
and got along swimmingly; but at length his
landlord wanted his pay; the Chinaman who
washed his shirt, and the negro who blacked
his boots, wanted theirs; and under this pressure—more formidable than the thirteen robbers whom he encountered single-handed and
vanquished in £1 Dorado—the Captain took
his departure. We believe he is now stopping
at Grass Valley.

Oct. 7, 1881. County Auditor,
TRIAL OF Myrns.—The case of Warren
Myers, indicted for tke murder of Valentine
Bran, came up for trial in the District Court on
Tuesday. The first day was occupied in empanneling a jury, the evidence was taken yesterday, and the case is being argued to-day, and
will be given to the jury sometime this evening.
The testimony showed the case to be one of the
most cold-blooded murders on record, and the
only defense set up was imsanity. He killed
his best friend for the most trifling cause, made
no attempt to escape, and when subsequently
brought in presence of his dying victim exhibted such hardened indifference, that his actions
can only be accounted for on the supposition
that he was insane. Persons who had known
him well never suspected that he was insane;
but it was shown that he acted rather strangely
« few hours before the murder, and it appears
that he has had several attacks of epilepsy. .
jury will probably be unable to agree on a .
verdict.
Tuz Arrray at Soutn Fork.—Andrew
Maloney, who was stabbed at South Fork on
Saturday evening last, by Thos. Stakum, died .
on Monday from the effect of the wound. His .
remains were brought to Nevada on Tuesday
evening, and buried in the Catholic cemetery .
at Grass Valley yesterday. Stakum, who was .
$0 roughly handled by Maloney’s friends, is in
a critical condition, but the impression is that .
he will recover. He is closely watched, and .
will be taken into custody as soon as he is able
to be removed.
New Buryinc Gnounp.—We learn that .
the Catholics of this vicinity have purchased
several lots west of, and adjoining, the public
burying ground, to be used as a cemetery for
that denomination. Messrs. Kent & Mackay
have contracted to build a substantial fence .
‘round it, and when enclosed the ground will
be consecrated in accordance with the rites of .
the Church.
Co. G. W. Wurraan left Nevada this mor.
ning, with his family, for Washoe, with the .
purpose of residing there permanently.

READ THE FOLLOWING TRSTIMONIALS FROM WELL KNOWN
MininG CoMPANIRS 1% THIS CouNTY.
Grass VaLury, Aug. 3, 1861.
Messrs. Terry & InvinG:—Gents: I have been
using your Machine Sewed Hose for some time past, .
and I find it works better than any hose I have ever
before used. [ have one hundred and ninety-six feet
pressure, whieh only the strongest and best made
hose is able to stand, The advantage of Machine
Made Hore is that the seams are more regular than
can be made by hand, thereby giving an equal strain
on all the threads. It is perfectly smooth, and consequently will last longer than that manufactured by
hand. R. Toomas,
Greennorn, Aug. 26, 1861.
Terry & InvinG:—Sirs: I was induced to purchase
some of your Machine Sewed Hose in consequence of
it being cheaper than other hose, and after having
used it for eight months, I am fully satisfieu that it
is much more durable than that made by hand. This
is very easily sccounted for from the fact that the
seams being perfectly straight and smooth there is
lesa friction. . shall certainly recommend my friends
to purchase that in preference to any other.
JAMES SOUTHALL, .
Quaker Hitt, Aug. 27, 1861.
Messrs. Terry & IRVING:—Gentlemen: In regard .
to the durabitity of your Machine Sewed Hose, Ihave .
no hesitation in saying that I prefer it to that manufactured by hand. I have been using your hose for
the past year, andin every particular it has given
entire satisfaction. Jacoss & Co,
