Swoorixe Arrray at Origaxs Fiat.—Two
shooting affrays occurred at Orleans Flat last
Sunday night, by which two men who bad no)
part in the difficulties were shot, and one is sup.
posed to be mortally wounded. The first occurred in Julien’s saloon, about ten o'clock in .
the evening. A man named Long got into a)
quarrel with another named Donaldson, and
the former in attempting to draw a pistol from .
behind Long at the time. The ball took effect .
in the calf of the leg, inflicting a pretty severe .
flesh wound,
The other affair, which was of a more scrious
ebaracter, occurred at John Maguire's saloon, .
about twelve o’clock the satne night. It appears that Maguire and a man named Jawes .
Mackay got into a difficulty. Mackay caught
held of a bottle with the intention, it is supposed, of striking Maguire, when the latter
drew his pistol, but before getting it round in
the range of Mackay it accidentally went off
and wounded a man named Mat. Rooney. The
ball entered his right side just below the ribs, .
ranged dowowards through the abdomen, and
has not yet been extracted. The wound was at
first supposed to be mortal, but we learn that
Rooney was somewhat better yesterday morn)
ing, and hopes are now entertained of bis recovery. Maguire immcdiately surrendered bim.
self into the custody of the officers, was ¢xatwined before Justice Caperton on Mouday, aud
discharged.

OVERLAND ITEMS.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14.—Lord Lyons, in his interview with Secretary Cass, expressed confidence
inthe amicable settlement of the North-western
question. However much our Government may be
impressed with the truth that the island of San Juan
belongs to us, there appears to be no doubt that
both the Governments of Great Britain and the
United States will instruct their agents in that quarter to act with the utmost circumspection in view of
satisfactory adjustment of existing differences.
The State Department at Washington has received information from our Minister at Berlin, that
Christian Ernst, an American naturalized citizen,
who had been compelled, by force, to enter the Hanoverian army, has, upon the remonstrance of our
Government, been discharged from the service.

Cask oF A Lost Cu1Lp.—We have just seen a
. private letter from Leipsec, Ohio, which gives an
account of a little child’s wandering off into the
woods and becoming lost The child was six years
of age. Its mother, Mrs. King, living at a little
town called Cuba, started to visit a neighbor named
Crook. The child went a part of the way, but,
meeting Mr. Crook’s children, who were carrying
water to their father in a field near by, turned to go
with them. Some of the children commenced quarreling with it, and one of them picked up a stick to
strike it, but was prevented by the eldest. The
child then turned back for home. It had to go
through a little strip of woods, and in traversing it,
took a wrong path. Search was begun in a few
hours, but no trace being found, the on neighborhood became alarmed and started forth into the
woods. The search was continued for seven days,
and on the seventh a child’s tracks were found in
some low ground, still moist after a rain. Runners
were sent to Findley, Lima, andall through Putnam
county, to raise additional force for a more thorough search. On the tenth day at one o'clock, the
little wanderer was found. It was lying across a
log, quite dead. It had evidently starved. It had
been, too, in the same place for several days; had
beaten a path between two logs, and at the end of it
had made a little bed of leaves and moss. It had
also constructed a playhouse of sticks and poles
. which it had dragged together. The two nights preceding the discovery, rain had fallen, and the little
creature had taken off its clothes and hung them up
on the bushes to dry. Its clothing consisted of a
sun bonnet, a calico dress, a quilted skirt and chemise, all of which were carefully hung up in a convenient place. The little body was entirely naked.
Framing a litter, the melancholy company bore it
homeward. When the mother saw the sad sight,
she rushed forward, fell frantically upon the dead
child and swooned. For a long time she lay insensible, and her grief, upon recovery, was so great
that it was thought she would die.—Marysville .
