KiLitep BY Proxy.—A difficulty occurred .
this morning, in a blacksmith’s shop at Quaker .
Hill, between two men named Lewis and Hall.
It appears that Hall had chopped some cord .
wood for Lewis, and the latter accused him of .
cording up a large quantity of chips with the .
wood. This led toa dispute in which Hall
told Lewis he lied. Lewis had a pick in his
hand at the time, which he threw at Hall as
soon as the lie was given. The point of the
piek struck Hull in the back, but it was turn.
ing at the time, and inflicted but a slight flesh .
wound, though it bled pretty freely for a time.
One of Lewis’ hands was badly cut, by the
rough iron, as he threw the pick. At first .
it was supposed that Hall was badly hurt, and
Geo. Jacobs, with whom he had been living,
immediately sent a Mexican to Nevada for Dr. .
Hunt. The Mexican told the story in such a
way that the news soon spread that Jacobs had .
had a pick run through his body and was bleeding to death. The Doctor, of course, hurried
up as fast as horse flesh would carry him, only .
to find that his services were not needed, and
the Sheriff started in pursuit of the murderer, .
but has not yet caught him.
Casz oF Myxnrs.—The counsel in this case .
having concluded their arguments, it was giv
en to the jury on Thursday evening, and a ver.
dict of “murder in the second degree” was re.
turned on Friday forenoon. The jury, on retiring, stood six for murder in the first degree,
and six for acquittal, but one of the latter soon
changed his mind, and for over twelve hours
they were seven for conviction and five for ac.
quittal. The verdict was evidently the result .
of a compromise among the jurors, and as .
there is a possibility that Myers may be insane, .
it is perhaps as well that he should be sent to
the Penitentiary. We are confident that a
commission of physicians would never grant a
certificate of insanity in his case, nor would he
be received into the asylum. He was ordered
to be brought before the Court on Tuesday
next for sentence, and the Judge will probably
sentence him for life.
Suootinc Matcu.—We learn that a shoot.
ing match, for turkeys, chickens, pigs, etc.,
comes off at the Six Mile House, on the Wash.
Persons, who, from ington road, to-morrow.
the force of circumstances, are compelled to .
obey the Sunday law, and who are not inclined
to attend church, will have an opportunity for
a pleasant recreation by attending the shooting .
match,
DIsaGreep.—In the ease of A. R. Jenkins,
tried this morning before Justice Kendall for
violating the Sunday law, the jury disagreed,
were discharged, and the case set fortrial again
on Monday. Jenkins keeps a saloon in the .
same building with the National Exchange, but .
his bar is not connected with the hotel, and the
case hardly comes within the exceptions of the
law.
Removat.—Charley Irish has made ar-.
rangements to remove the Fashion Restaurant .
from Commercial street, to the building on .
Broad street, known as the St. Leon Restau.
rant, a few doors above Pine.

TerriroriaL Seau.—Secretary Clemens,
of Nevada Territory, in a communication .
to the Legislature, submits the following .
desigu fora Territorial Seal :
Mountains, with a stream of water coursing .
down their sides, and falling on the overshot .
wheel of a quartz-mill at their base. A miner .
leaning on his pick and upholding a United .
States Flag. A motto expressing the two ideas .
( hay gp to the Union and the wealth to sus.
tain it, Volens Et Patens.
The Silver Age remarks as follows upon
this design :
We think that the design is a very elegant
one, with one exception. The idea of a miner,
standing with an American flag in his hand, is
very patriotic, but hardly in keeping with his
avocation. It would be much better to repre.
sent him coming out ofa tunnel with a rock
car before him. Then, too, we think that the
design would be greatly improved, and fully as
patriotic, by making it a night scene, with thirty-four stars in view. It is well known that
our Territory, no matter how we may seek to
disguise it, looks better by moonlight and starlight, than when seen through clouds of dust,
under the scorching rays of the sun.
Suarrs’ Riries.—'The Sharps’ Rifle Company, at Iiartford. Ct., bas ween running
its works twenty hoursa day, turning out.
live hundred finished rifles a week. The
demand for the rifles hus become so great,
however, that the establishment has latterly
commenced on twenty-four hour time. which
ig about as much as can be “got out of?
one day, even in Connecticut.
Dartxe Exprioit.—E. S. Garrett, of Con-,
cord, Mase, recently sucveeded in reaching
the profile roek, known as the “Old Man of
the Mountain,’ on the White Mountaias, .
aud safely planted a flag upon the crest of .
the rock whieh forms the cap. This feat. a.
very perilous one, has been successfully .
achieved but once before.

READ THE FOLLOWING TESTIMONIALS FROM WELL KNOWN
MINING COMPANIES IN THIS COUNTY.
Grass VALLEY, Aug. 3, 1861.
Messrs. Terry & IrnvinG:—Gents: I have been
using your Machine Sewed Hose for some time past, .
and . find it works better than any hose I have ever
before used. I! have one hundred and ninety-six feet
pressure, which only the strongest and best made
hose is able to stand, The advantage of Machine
Made Hose is that the seams are more regular than
can be made by hand, thereby giving an equal strain
on all the threads. It is perfectly smooth, and consequently will last longer than that manufactured by
R. Taomas,
.
Greennorn, Aug. 25, 1861,
Terry & Invinc:—Sirs: I was imduced to purchase
some of your Machine Sewed Hose in consequence of .
it being cheaper than other hose, and after having
used it for eight months, Iam fully satisfieu that it .
. is much more durablethan that made by hand. This .
is very easily accounted for from the fact that the .
seams being perfectly straight and smooth there is .

Messrs. Terry & IkviNG:—Gentlemen: In regard .
to the durabitity of your Machine Sewed Hose, Ihave .
no hesitation in saying that I prefer it to that man.
1 have been using your hose for
the past year, andin every particular it has given
entire satisfaction, Jacons & Co,
