LOCAL MATTERS.
BreckinripG# Meetine.—Dr. Gwin, F.
Tilford and Judge Searls addressed the Breck~
inridge meeting on Saturday evening. The
meeting vas held in front of Grimes’ Saloon,
on Pine street, and a large crowd was in attendance. Dr. Gwin took the stand amid profound silence, and was greeted with neither
cheer nor groan. He spoke about an hour,
and the speech was precisely the same he has .
been delivering in other plages—being devoted
almost exclusively to defending himself. Tilford undertook to demolish the Little Giant,
and made a signal failure. Judge Searls gave .
a luminous exposition of the Dred Scott decis.
ion and the rights of the people in-the Territo.
ries. In the course of his remarks, he likened
the Breckinridge party to a drove of well-known .
long eared animals, and it must be admitted .
made an apt comparison. The meeting was .
the dullest one of the campaign. There was .
no enthusiasm, and no attempt to cheer the .
speakers. At the conclusion of the speaking .
some one proposed, “Three cheers for Breckinridge and Judge Searls;” which excited some
laughter but nary cheer. Col. Crenshaw, who .
acted as Chairman, then proposed three cheers
for Breckinridge and Lang, which were given,
and followed by nine hearty cheers for Douglas .
and Johnson. No attempt was made to raise .
a cheer for Lincoln. There were some five or .
six hundred persons present, and judging from
the cheering at the close of the meeting, twothirds of the crowd were Douglas men. .
ELECTION PRECINCTS.—We learn that some .
dissatisfaction has been occasioned by the ac.
tion of the Board of Supervisors, in discontin.
uing the précincts of Poorman’s Creek, in .
Washington township, and Sailor Bar, in Eureka. Had there been any names sent in from
those points for Judges and Inspectors, pre.
cinets would doubtless have been established;
but the people interested having neglected to
recommend any persons for election officers,
and the members of the Board being unacquainted at the places, the precincts were discontinued for this year. There are few places .
in either Washington or Eureka townships
where any considerable number of voters will
be compelled to travel over two miles to a vo-.
ting plaoe; while in Nevada and Grass Valley I
townships many voters are compelled to go six .
or eight miles.
OAKLAND Scnoo. District.—Mr. Boynton, who has just completed the school census
of Oakland District, furnishes us the following .
figures : Total number of children in the Dis.
trict under twenty-one years of age, 126, of .
whom 68 are boys and 58 are girls, and only .
one,is over eighteen years. Number of school .
children between the ages of four and eighteen,
79; under four, 46; born in California, 86. By .
adding to the above the number reported for
the Nevada District, we find there are 855 chil.
dren in Neyada township under twenty-one,
483 of whom are school children, and360 under
four years.
Snow on tHE HenNess Rovrr.—Mr. H. .
A. Kelley, who has lately returned from Wash.
oe, informs us that nothing like as much snow .
fell on the Henness road as was supposed. It .
was reported that the snow was from two to
three fect deep on the summit; but Mr. Kelléy, .
who crossed on horseback the next day after .
the heaviest storm, took the trouble to measure
the depth of snow in several plaees, and did
not find it over eight inches deep at any point
on the road. There was net enough to inter-.
rupt travel at Ko time, and we learn that it .
has nearly all melted off. .
.
1
Corner Stone.—The Pennsylvania Hose .
Co. No. 2, will lay the corner stone of their .
building, on ‘Broad street, at four o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Judge Belden will deliver .
an appropriate address on the occasion. A
hole about six inches square has been cut in!
the stone, in which will be deposited a copy of .
the Constitution and By-laws of the Company,
one of each of the loeal papers, a copy of the .
San Francisco Fireman’s Journal, some American coins, and other articles. ‘lhe ceremo.
nies will no doubt be interesting. .
PArp IN—We6 learn that the Sheriff paid
over to the County ‘Freasurer, yesterday evening, $30,000 collected on the property tax.
About $15,000 more will be paid at the month.
ly settlement on the first of November. There .
is now money enough in the general fund to
ag scrip registered ‘prior to December Ist, .
Whe
ASHMORE’S MELODEON—We learn that this .
building will be fixed up im the course of a few j
days, and the first ‘performance will be given
next Saturday evening. Ashmore has secured
the services of a talented company of voealists, .
dancers, .musicians, etc., and the entertain-.
ments will no doubt be interesting and amusing.
Benerit Batxr.—A ball will be given on
Thursday evening next, at Temperance Hall,
for the benefit of Mr. M. Sullivan. Some
months ago Mr. Sullivan lost his all by fire,
and we trust will receive a substantial benefit.
}
.
A Lance Loap.—Mr. Lambert, who has .
just returned from a trip over the Henness .
road, informs us that he met a teamster on the
way to Virginia City, with etghty hundred
pounds—four funs—on his wagon.
Chatelaines, Bracelets, Gold Cane Heads, Silver Cups,
‘And Goblets. .
A Busy Day.—Saturday last was a busy dav
at the Sheriff’s office. From seven o’clock in
the morning until nine o’clock at night, the
office was besieged by a crowd of tax payers,
who waited until the last day of grace before
squaring up.
Rarrie.—tThe large and magnificent painting, on exhibition at Harrington’s saloon, will
be disposed of by rafle next Saturday evening.
It was painted by a Nevada artist, and is valued at tickets one dollar each. We learn
that the tickets are nearly all sold.
.
WE are indebted to Geo. Stone for sundry
favors in the newspaper line.

Sands’ Sarsaparilla—For Purifying the blood
—Health depends almost entirely upon the state of
the blood. If the vitalizing fluid which pervades every tissue membrane, fibre, filament, gland or other
organ, primary and subsidiary, be charged with the
elements of disease, sickness must be the conse.
quence, and until the cause is eradicated, no permanent relief can be expected. It is here that the
powerful health restoring properties of SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA are manifested ; its searching operation
reaches the germ of disease, and the cures it _performs are therefore fadical and thorough. Read the .
testimony in another column.
