THE VOICELESS. BY OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES, “We count the broken lyres that rest Where the sweet = ling —— slumber, jut o’er their silent sister's breas : The wild flowers who will stop to number? ° A few can touch the magic string, And noisy Fame is proud to win them; Alas! for t that never ning, But die with all their music in them! a jeve not for the dead alone, “+ song has told their heart’s sad story— ‘Weep for the voiccless, who have known The cross without the crown of glory! Not where Levcadian breeres sweep O’er Sappho’s memory-haunted billow, But where the glistening night-dews wee O’er nameless sorrow’s ehureh-yard pillow. O, hearts that break and give no sign Save whitening lip and nor . tresses, ‘Till Death pours out bis cordial wine, Slow-dropped from Mixery’s crushing presses— If singing breath or echoing chord To every hidden pang were given, “What cndlone melodies were poured, ‘As sad as earth, as sweet as heaven! A Royvan “Svankino.’—A gentleman of Rochester professes to have been an eye witness to the following scene: Some 13 or 14 years ago, her Majesty, accompanied by the Prince consort, and the royal children, visited Scotland in the roy al yacht, and called at Aberdeen, and of course the loyal inhabitants of that city ‘turned out in large numbers. A guard of honor formed, and in all the glory of black ‘proadcloth aod white kids, paraded on the edge of the dock, while thousands were assembled a little further back, to gaze on fhe spectacle of an annointed queen, Her Majesty good nataredly remained on deck to gratify tbe curiosity of the bonny Scots, accompanied by the Prince of Wales, then achild of five or six years old, The Prince like other boys of his age, being of a destructive turn, began to pull at the tassel of a splendid sofa on the deck, in a manner that threatened to detach it, His mother observed the act, and ordered the boy to desist, He did so, but as soon as her back was turned, seized the tassel again and gave it another jerk. In an instant the queen turned, and seizing the luckless heirapparent of England by the “scruff of the neck,’? elevated one of her feet upon the sofa, hoisted the youngster over her knee, adjusted him in the position-mutually familiar to parents and children generally, when such ceremonies are performed, and gave him a sound spanking. It is an interesting fact that the iliustrious sufferer kicked and bellowed under the afflictive dispensation, uite ag lustily os children of lowlier birth, he amazed silence with which the spectators witnessed the example of royal discipline, was suddenly broken by a tremendous roar of laughter, which could not be suppressed by any thought of decorum, re@pect for the queen or bai ap for the vice tim of her displeasure, The explosion recalled the royal mother to a sense of her position, and having turned toward the crowd for a moment, ber face suffused with erimeson,, she hastily descended into the cabin, and was seen no more by the expectant population. Anoruen Frencu Ipga,—The Roman correspondent of the World says that an idea has been thrown out at Paria that the French intervention in Syria will RY an opportanity for the Pope’s leaving Etaly altogether, and fixing the Holy See at Jerusatem itself. Palestine having been previously wrested from Turkish dominion by the victorious Gallic legions, This plan would leave the Italian peniosula to unity and freedom, and tare the holy sepulchre, under the immediate custody of the Supreme Pontiff; but those who approve of this soution must reflect in the first place .that Pio Nino would hardly accept the soverelgnty, even temporal as well as spiritual, of Palestine, a8 an equivalent for his fair slice of Italy, and that in the second place the jealousy of the Greek and Latin churches la so great that although Napoleon, as successor of Charlemagne, and therefore protector ex officio of the Latin cburch. may wish to sce Jerusalem restored to Christianity under the sovereign rule of the tiara, the Emperor of Russia as head of the Greek church, so powerful ia the East; would never consent to place the holy sepulchre under the supreme protection of the rival sect. . : Waking on THE Warer.—Lewie C. Welsh, a lecturer on Spiritualism, announced that the spirits had informed bim that he should walk on the water at Fall River the other Sunday. Accordingly, in the presence of a crowd, he was rowed to the middle of the river and stepped overboand. Of course the spirits were not only viewless but sadly deficient 1n buoyancy, and the fellow went down go far that even his ears were submerged, When he came up to the surface, he employed the boatmen to set him ashore on the opposite side of the river, and he started for Providence, cogi+ tating upon the difference between a crazy . man and a fool. The News thinks waterwalking still in its “primal upfolding, and has not yet soared iuto its ulterior development of a normal cundition, and attained a sublime altisude of trahscendal quintessence, Mestine at La Granax.—The Sonora Age is informed that a large and enthusiastic Democratic mecting was held at La Grange, Stanislaus county, on the 3d inst. Judge Quint, candidate for the Senate from that District, was one of the speakers. The Age is assured that the Judge is all right in Stanislaus, and that he will come out of thatcounty with from two to three hundred _—. Well done for Stanislaus! Keep the in motion, ‘. of medicines at different times without the slightest Taxiva Him at His Worp.—A man late. ly bought a gownpiece at a sale by auction, not a hundred miles from San Francisco, . and jestingly said that the first woman who . would give him a kiss should have the dress asa gift. A woman immediately stepped forth, kissed bim and carried off the gownpiece, to the utter diecomflture of the confounded joker. . Medical. Of all Diseases, the Great First Cause Springs from neglect of Nature's laws. SUFFER NOT! When a cure is guaranteed in ull stages of . SECRET DISEASES. ] Selfabuse, Nervous Debility, Strictures, Gleet, Gravel . Diabetes, Diseases of the Kidneys and Bladder, Mercurial Rheumatism, Scrofula, Pains in the Bones and Ankles, Diseases of the Lungs, Throat, Nose and Eyes, Uleers upon the Body or Limbs, Cancera, Dropsy, Epileptic Fits, St. Vitus’ Dance, and all Diseases arising from a derangement of the Sexual 8. Such as Nervous Trembling, Loss of memory, Loss of Power, General Weakness, Dimness of Vision, with veculiar spots appearing before the eyes, Loss of Sight, Wakefulneen, Pyspepsin, Liver Diseases, Eruptions . upon the Face, Pain in the Back and Head, Female . Irregularities, and allimproper discharges of both sexes, It matters not from what cause tho disease originated, however long standing or obstinate the ease, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has batfied the skill of eminent physicians and resisted all their means of cure. The medicines prescribed are pleasant, without odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and free feom mercury or balsam. During fifteen years of practice, in Enrope, the Atlantic States, and California, I have rescued from the jaws of death many thousands, who, in the last stages of the above men tioned diseases, kad been given up to di@ by their physicians, whick warrants me in promising to the affiicted, who may place themselves under my care, a perfect and 5 y cure, Private diseases are the greatest enemies to health, as they are the first cause of Consumption, Scrofula, and many other diseases, and should be a terror to the human family, A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected, a tnajority of the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fail to cure the disease, but ruin the constitution, filling the system with mercury, which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid consumption, But should the disease and the treatment not cause death speedily, and the victimemarries, the disease is entailed upon the children, who are born with feeble constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief existance of suffering, and consigning them to an early rave, . Sx.r-Anuse is another formidable enemy to health, for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes so destructive a drain upon the system, drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years of suffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys the nervous system, va pe wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the proper developement of the system, disqualifies for marriage, society, business, and all earthly happiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train of evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the fullest confidence 1 assure the unfortunate victims of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy cure can be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous practices my patients can be restored to robust, vigorous heslth, Irregelarities, amd all diseases of males and females treated on principles established by fifteen years o practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most remarkable cures.
