: 3 § © g } ke bs a eer SS ict tl a NEVADA DEMOCRAT. _ eee eas ——— Soe =a MORNING, OCT, 21, 1857. “WEDNESDAY =: ‘A New Quartz Cavsuer.—The traveling gorrespondent of the Bulletin, gives the annexed description of a new quartz crusher, which has recently been put in operation on the Pecahontas lead, some three miles from the town of, El Dorado, in the county of that name; “The stamps are of the ordinary kind and weigh seven bundred pounds each, rere they may be made of any required weight. Instead of being lifted in the ordinary muaner, steam is conveyed to them by a tube from the boiler, and applied iv the cylinders directly to small piston heads in the upper part of the stems. This lifts them to the required distance, and then, the steam escaping, they fall like other stampers by their own weight. The size of the cylinders is four and three-eights inches diameter, with elevea inches stroke, and a ste xm pressure of fifty pounds to the inch is used, The ordinary uumber of blows stuck by stamps in commen mills moved by water or steam power, is about sixty per minule. By this manner ene hundred or more falls can be eaused in the . same time. By this arrangement cams, shafts. . and other heavy and costly gearing are entirely . dispensed with, and there is much less liability . of breakage, and necessity of expensive repairs, . while the amount of work performed is much greater, A stamper weighing seven hundred . pounds, moved by the ordinary machinery, will crush a ten and half of rock per day, One mov. ed in this manaer, and striking from one-third . to one-half as many more blews, will, perhaps, erush half as much more rock. If it was thought advisable, it would not require any very extensive alteration to admit the steam behind the pisten, and thus tura the stamps into steam hammers, make it throw them downwards with . a force additional to their own weight. This machine was made in San l’rancisco, where it was tested for a number of days on the hardest rock that could be found, with very satisfectory . results,” Tun Perr River Covnrry.—The mountains . forming the principal range in the northern part of California, are steep andrugged, Their aseent can only be made by means of serpen. tine paths or trails, which wind themselves . about the base of the mountains like huge ser*pents beneath the underbrush. These paths . were originally made by the Indians, long before the white man wandered in search of gold. ‘The loftiest peaks range from three to three . nad a half miles in height, and during the win. ter their sides are covered with snow; but when . the ferce rays of the summery sun fall upon the . snowy hill tops, a deluge of water rushes down . ile ravines aud through the deep rocky dells of ihe Sierras, and goes boiling and foaming on . in its course to the sea. Nothing can withstand . the fury of the torrent but the old gray rocks . whieh have been worn smooth by the action of the water fora thonsand years. Woe betide . the Indian or the wild deer that. attempts to . ford the stream, until the waters have spent . their fury on tke projecting rocks or reached the smooth channel in the valley below. To the spectator, standing ew of the valley, a . wraud speciacle is presented; the vast plain neous $o slreach away beyoud the reach af vis. ions the river, skirted with green trees, winds . through the valley, while here and there the . rays of the sua flash through be openings in the . tirebes, or ore reBected like & sheet of fire from the Little Iskes at the foot ef the hifis.—-Sae. 1p Ca ivorxia Ex" ne—The Los Angeles Mar relates the following iasiauce ef the bolduess which chovacterizes the actions of outhiws ia that part of the country. The advertiser proposes . to insure the payment of any or all of these . debts upon the payment of l the creditors. oe a small premium by j A Miserasie Deata.—An old, destitute and unknowo man was found lying on the street in Sacramento on Tuesday week, and wasconvey. ed to the station-house by a policeman. He said he had recently came from the mountains, and thathe was sick with the chills and fever. About nine o’clock on Wednesday morning a prisoner heard him moaning in his cell and asked him how he felt? His reply was, ‘‘very bad.’ The prisoner raised him against the wall, and left. .When he returned, the old man was dead. J. Canpkay Is the only Physician and Surgeon now in California who bas accumulated a fortune solely by the } ractice of his profession, He hasa classical education, and added to the talents of a physician and surgeon, he isa gentleman of easy manners, and possesses a frank and open heart. These qualities have gon. tribated much to his great success, but that which has . done more for him than all else is the uniform candor he las shown to his patients. He never decieves them, but . tells them with sincerity and honesty his opinion of their diseases. Though possessing confidence in himself, he never vituperates other gentlemen of the profession; and from . our acquaintance with him, we believe he strives religiously “‘to do unto others as he would that others should do . unto him.” We refer the reader to the Doctor's advertisement in another column. ga CERTIFICATF.—], the undersigned, Governor of .
