q a 3 ¥ Al — evada Pemoceat. “LOCAL MATTERS, Tre BAnsucve.—tThe committee appointed . for that purpose, have nearly completed the . necessary arrangements for the political meet. oe ings and barbecue, which come off ‘to-morrow . © and next day. There will bp a torehlight pro. cession and speaking at Grass Vallesto mor. row evening; the barbecue will take place at/. the Glenbrook race track on Saturday, with a torchlight procession to Nevada.in the evening. ‘There will also be speaking at the race track . during the day, and at Nevada on Saturday . evening, Fears were entertained yesterday . that the weather would be unfavorable, and se. riously interfere with the programme adopted . by the Committee, but at present we have the prospect of fine weather, and a fine time. We . understand that several races will take place at the track on Saturday, and other intellectual . amusements will be provided. } Crry AssessmEeNT.—Mr. Church, who has . been engaged for the past few weeks in assessing the property in the city, has nearly com. pleted the work, and the ‘roll will be delivered . over to the Trustees, for examination and correction, in the course of a week or ten days. } The total amount of property assessed is $803,. 824; showing an increase of nearly $50,000 . over the assessment of last year, It is proba. ble that several thousand dollars will yet be . added to the roll. ‘The total revenue from the . property tax, after deducting the expense of . collection, and making a fair deduction for de. linquents, will amount to about $3,500. mrt Snock1Nneé AccIDENT.—We learn from Mr. . I. Williamson, that two young men named . Gaylord Compton and Thos. Whiting were terribly injured at Grass Valley, at half past three . o’clock this afternoon, while firing a cannon in . honor of the Republican victory. The gun went off while they were loading. It is a matter of doubt whether either will regain his, eyesight, and theirarms were badly lacerated and burned. Old Mr. Compton, the father of Gaylord, was tending the vent-hole, ‘and escaped uninjured. , ENLARGING A DitcH.—We learn that the South Yuba Canal Company have determined . to enlarge their ditch, conveying water from Rock creek to Blue Tent. The enlargement is . rendered necessary by the discovery and open. ing of new diggingsin that neighborhood, which . has created a demand for more water than the . present ditch is capable of supplying. The . work will be commenced next Monday, and . completed in a week.or ten days. The. com. pany purpose employing fifty hands if they can . be obtained. ‘ . Metnopist PARSONAGE.—The Trustees of the Methodist Church have contracted with . Messrs. Stiles, Fawcette & Malone for,the erec. tion of a parsonage building, on the lot adjoining and next below the present parsonage. The amount to be paid is $2,100, and the building is to be finished by the first of January next. When completed, according to the specifications, it will be one of the best -residences in town. Snow.— While it was raining yesterday even. ing at Nevada, it was snowing in the mountains above. Enough fell to cover the ground . on the ridge road between ‘Nevada and Alpha, . and there was some two or three inches on the ridge between the south and middle Yubas. Should the weather continue pleasant, as there is now a prospect, the snow will disappear in a few days, and the roads’ will.be in excellent condition until the next storm. Townsuip OFrricers.—Messrs. John Anderson, E. W. Smith, and John Kendall are announced as’ candidates for Justice of the Peace for this township, and Joseph B. Gray . for Constable. We presume there will be no . nominations for these offices in Nevada town. ship, by any of the political parties. Po.iricaL SpEAKING.—Chas. A. Tuttle, af . Auburn, candidate for Eleetor on the Lincoln . ticket, is announced to speak in Nevada this . everling. Col. E. J.C. Kewen,a Breckinridger, . has given notice that he will address the peole of Nevada to-morrow evening, and of Grass Valley on Saturday evening. 1 . . . . ‘ . THE company now performing at the Melo. deon, will give an entertainment at Grass Val. ley to-morrow evening.Mctixy.—By advices from Manila to the 18th of August we learn thal an American . hark bad been taken charge of by the au. thorities of the province of Cagayan, at the . northern extremity of the island of Luzon . (the principal island of the. Philippine . group,) her crewehaving mutinied and! taken her into one of tbe principal ports of . the Babuyan islands. The Alcade of Cag: . ayan, lad taken ber to Appari, and her crew (Lasears, it was said) were in eonfine. ment. Her name had not‘ been officially . reported to the Government, nor that of her . eaptain, nor yet ber port of destination, . nor whenee she came. It was stated, how. ever, that the captain had been, wounded . and contined by the mutioeers, as also his wife and the ollicere, and that three persons . had been killed on board and eeveral woun. ded. She was reported to have a quantity . of artillery and military stores on board, . From Appari she wa8 to be taken to Ma-. nila.—[Bulletin. . 132 CLAY STREET, NEAR SANSOME, Tumnry-six Mite Race.—The thirty-six mile race, between the California horses belonging to. Alviso and Selaya, came off at Milpitas, Santa Clara county, on Saturday last. The race was won by the horse of Selaya, in an hour and forty minutes, Considerable money was bet on the result.
