ES RE Ee + chee Rm TCA RRR eat oct er "A View Froid” Mount asta. The November number of the Hesperian contains an article from the pen of Calvin B. McDonald, gividgan account of a trip which the writer, with onecompanion, made to the top of Mount Shasta. Having reached the summit, the writer says: Fortunately the day was uncommenly clear, enabling us'to see far to the Hast, over the desert, where numerous lakes flashed midway, like minute pieces of burnished silver. There-seomed to be no boundary to vision; but the eye absolutely ached and closed with very weariness, Ateng the crest of the Sierra Nevada, ond far below the specsator, Mount Lassen, Pilot Peak, Spanish Peak, and other notea Jandmarks were distinctly visible, but they bad lost all of that sublimity with which they impress the wondering worshipper who looks from the lowlands, They seemed no more than watcbetowers on a castle wall which is overlooked from an udjacent hill, Westward and beyond the coast range, there was a mirage-like something, which we imagined to be the ocean; and to the South, the Sacramento River drew its long, silver thread outof sight on the plain, while Southerly peaks stood in uncertain shapes along the borizou, But, to the North, looking from the sun, over the vast territory of Oregon, the most distinct view of landmarks was obtained. Mount Hood stood forth in majestic distioction, and other cake which we were unable to recognize & name were clearly discerned, in addition to numerous lakes, streams, valleys and mountain chains which we bad not sufficient geographical knowledge to identify. Until then, we had no adequate conception of the vast region stretchiug Northward, aod which has recently become a State of vast resources, and rapidly developing wealth. ‘Lingering above the prodigious landscape, we looked and worshiped; not with that adoration inspired in the little temples which men build, but with the speechless reverence whieh silence commanded on the awfal heights, The man who could stand there, an atom in unbounding space, bewildered by the innumerable splendors of the gorgeous picture; without acknowledging the absolute empire of a Great God Almighty, is an atheist too blind, too stotid, too idiotic to be damned for his unbelief. Vor myself, standing on heights nearly three times the altitude of Olympus, I felt chilled and speechless in the awfal presence of Omnipotent Deity, whose tremendous power was silently declared y that gigantic landmark of the clouds, Here we found two flagataffs planted in the crevices of the rocks, but the flags bad been threshed to pieces and apportioned to the winds that float in swift currents Northward; there were a few remnants clinging to the sticks, the remainder having been swept down to Shasta Valley or carried on towards Oregon, Under a shelving rock we discovered several newspapers, and scraps of manuscript, one of the latter making known that one flag had been placed there by Capt. Prince, in 1852; the other, a temperance banner, had been planted in 1855, by Rev, Israel 8, Deihl, who, it was recorded, bad ascended alone, Another scrap contained these apposite words, in pencil: ‘If { ascend unto Heaven, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning and fly to the ut termost parts of the earth, behold Thou art therel’? Desiring to add something to this aerial etore of letters, I discovered that paper and pencil were missing. Like Banyan’s Pilgrim to rest on the Hill of Difficulty and falling into sinful sleep lost bis roll, my stock of writing materials had bern dropped at some resting place beow. Hxnaustion OF THE Peruvian Bark.—A gentleman long resident in South America states that there is some danger that the supplies of that very useful medical drug, Peruvian bark, aud the still more useful sulpbate of quinine obtained from it, may soon be exhausted. The cincbona, the tree which yields the bark, grows at a ver great height on the slopes of the Andes in various localities from Bolivia to New Granada. In the latter country it is found on the central branch of the Cordilleras, and the two best varieties have iitherto heen those of Pitavo and Fangamga, two New Granada alpine districts. But these are already exhausted and both in the United States and Nngland another and poorer kind, known as Almagna bark, which was at first totally unsaleable, is now used to a very great extent. The price of the best importations in the London market has gone up within a few years from 1s, 6d. per pound to 2s6d. and 3s., while the Almagna, for a long time refused by the dealers, is now readily puredased at 1s, 4d. A single tree yields from ten to forty arrobas, and itis calculated that it will take at least fifty years for the shoots of the old, destroyed tree to attain a middling size. The supplies from Bolivia, however, continue to roaintain the highest rank, both in regard to quality and quantity, CHINA ALL Over.—The Chinese succeeded . in raising the steamer Cormorant, sunk in the Peiho, and took out her engines. The Emperor, when be heard the engines would not work, summoned four watchmakers from Pekin, “You understand machines?” eaid he to the trembling artisane, ‘Make the barbarian concern go, or I'll cut your heads off.” Down they went, and after mature deliberation, built a fire in the furnace, and had the supreme delight of seeing a dense smoke ascend through the funnel, This being considered an ample success, they returned in honor, and wear their heads still in the natural way. Of all Discases, the Great First Cause Springs from neglect of Nature's laws. sures ert! 5 eneat When a cure is guaran in all 8 SeCRET DISEASES. It matters not from what cause the disease originated, however long standing or obstinate the case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a permanent cure can be effected by any other treatment, even after the disease has baffled the skill of eminent physicians and resisted all their means of cure. The medicines prescribed are pleasant, without odor, entirely vegetable, causing no sickness, and . free from mercury or balsam. During fifteen years of practice, in Europe, the Atlantic States, and Cali. fornia, I have rescued from the jaws of death many thousands, who, in the last stages of the above men tioned diseases, had been given up to die by their physicians, which warrants me in promising to the affiicted, who may place themselves under my care. a perfect and speedy cure, Private diseases ‘are the greateat enemies to health, as they are the first cause of Consumption, Serofula, and many other diseases, and should be a terror to the human family. A permanent cure is scarcely ever effected, a majority of the cases falling into the hands of incompetent persons, who not only fil to core the disease, but ruin the constitution, filling the system with mereury, which, with the disease, hastens the sufferer into a rapid consumption, But should the disease and the treatment not cause death speedily, and the victim marries, the disease is en upon the children, who are born with feeble constitutions, and the current of life corrupted by a virus, which betrays itself in scrofula, tetter, ulcers, eruptions, and other affections of the skin, eyes, throat and lungs, entailing upon them a brief existance of suffering, and consigning them to an early rave. . Sxur-Anuse is another formidable enemy to health, for nothing else in the dread catalogue of human diseases causes so destructive a drain upon the system, drawing its thousands of victims, through a few years of suffering, down to an untimely grave. It destroys the nervous system, rapidly wastes away the energies of life, causes mental derangement, prevents the proper developement of the system, disqualifies for marriage, society, business, and all earthly bappiness, and leaves the sufferer wrecked in body and mind, predisposed to consumption, and a train of evils more to be dreaded than death itself, With the fullest confidence I assure the unfortunate vietims of Self-abuse, that a permanent and speedy cure can be effected, and with the abandonment of ruinous practices my patients can be restored to robust, vigorous health, Irregelarities, and all diseases of males and females treated on principles established by fifteen years ol practice, and sanctioned by thousands of the most remarkable cures.
