Dismally blew the wind without,
And the cold gid ear down;
And the shutters badged with a nolay rout—
The noisiest things in town.
Yet the pauper slept—he was dreaming
Of many 4 pleasant scene—
Of boyhood’s days—of love’s first beaming—
Of the sunny village green.
He saw his mother’s cheerful face—
He heard her tender tones;
Ab, he waga child when he saw her lasty
Now earth doth hide her bongs.
Ten long hours the wife hath sat
Beside her husband’s bed,
With eyes a-weary, and tired and weak,
For she has got no bread.
Nothing to eat!—nothing to eat!
Hunger’s a pitiless foo!
No parley makes he e must have his mecd—
here can the wife yo?
Hist! hist!—he murmurs in his sleep;
Something he fain would say;
His pale lips part with a pleasing tone—
“Something to eat, 1 pray!”
Three days have they wereawful days—

Yet what are these to a death,
With hunger at your beds
And saihites to cheer the fainting heart
But the smile of your skeleton bride?

And heavily fell the raim;

Now heaven have merey on our souls,
For starve we surely must!

Where the lights so boldly shine;
And merrily pass the jest and song,
And sparkles the glowing wine.
“But what should they know of ourgrievous woe,

To give the poor a thought!”

Then the poor wife knelt by the husband’s aide,
And her thin lips moved to pray.
Heaven is more kind than the rich and proud—
Alaa! if it were not so
Where, in their dreadful hour of need,
Where would the weary go?
Like incense rare is the fervent prayer
Of the humble and the low,
Alas! now dead on his wretched bed
The starved pauper lay
Nor ever again through heart or vein
Shall the crimson current play.

Power of Eloquence—An Incident,
During Colonel Baker’s speech at the

the most tremendous stroke of oratory that
we ever saw exhibited by living man. Hundreds sprang to their feet and shouted, and

of human passion, The electrician had penetrated to the human soul, and in spite of
all political prejudices, the common sentiment of liberty smote like & hand of iron

was passing, the speaker stood erect and
