A-crime of uncommon atrocity has just . been committed at a place known as Reed’s Ranch, between San Rafael aud Saucelito, . in Marin county. Aman by the vame of George Wilson, and two of his friends, bad / been drinking together for some days. . This Wilson Was a very inoffensive man and . consequently the best ef his companions. . On the day referred to, they amused them. selves with soaking the clothes of Wilson with whiskey, and, to make surer of accomplishing their project, they poureda considerable quantity down his ueck, iu order to thoroughly soak his shirt with the . liquid, after which they set fire to the clothes of the wretched man. He remain(ed there abandoned, and we know fot whether any charitable band ever offered him a glass of water during his long agonies. At length he died, and it is only now that the facts have come to light. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the . . murderers, . Tur Hyprorvtr.—The Cambridge City . Council has purchased two hundred new . portable engines, called the “hydropult,”’ for $1,200—$6 cach. They are to be dis. tributed at different points in the city. . They are thus described : The bydropult is simply two metallic cyl. inders, with a plunger and piston, the clap. pers on the piston working in opposite di. rections, so that one cylinder is a suction . and one a forcing pump. is attached to the base of the cylinder, and . the foot placed in that strap holds the machinedown upon the ground. A gutta percha suction hose can be run into a tub . or a well, a leading hose conaected with . . the forcing cylinder, and then with one hand every man can ‘play away’ aud be his own fireman, * The whole machine . weighs but eight pounds, but will throw eight gallous per minnte, and project it fifty feet high. Rarning Syakks.— Wm. Ruggles, of South . Granville, N. Y., under date of August 6th, writes the Scientific American as follows: “During the heavy shower of rain which sundown, rock, I heard a peculiar and, on looking down, . saw a snake lying asifstunned by a fall from an immense . height. On commencing au examination, . the snake began to show signs of life, which . [ soon ended by a blow on the head. The reptile was about a foot long, and of a grey here, Ihad_ previously heard of similar . occurrences, but now, judging from occular demonstration, I verily believe that his snakeship bad never before seen South Granville, or, indeed any other part of terra-firma., Will you, or some your correspondents suggest a plausible theory for this . 97) . pbenomenon? } . Santa Crana.—The value of the taxable . property of Santa Clara county is $8,500,000. Three persons were burned—the servant and two children—and one child and the Sister were pected to recover. Sentencep.—The Court of Sessions, San Francisco, has sentenced Wm. Lodge. for robbery. to the State Prison for one year ; August Marchand, for robbery, three years; John MoWatt, for grand larceny, one year ; Wm. Wilson, for kidnapping a girl, two years. . set near Tehama on Friday night. HxGovernor Weller was on the top and got bruised a little, bat neither he nor any other of the passengers were seriously burt. . Watrer.—Sears’ Union Water Company, . of Sierra, bas lowered the rates of water at . that place, Chandlerville, from 60 cents to 45 cents an inch per twen. ty-four hours, <A vast reduction. . THe county of San Mateo has a popula. tion of 2,142, and 725 occunied dwelling houses, and the value of her real estate and personal property is $1,490,407. An iron strap is . fell here on the evening of July 3d, about . while I was standing on a flat . noise at my feet, . . 31,297 kine, 33,522 sheep, 9,781 hogs, 429,. Tourer Lives Lost.—The Catholic Asy. lam at Toledo, Ohio, was lately destroyed . Twelve persous were sleeping in . so reverely injured that they are not cx-) Ove of the mail stages for Portland up. and St. Louis, . NUMBER. 366. . No Oppostrion Arter Ati—The New . York Journal of Commeree, in speaking of . opposition steamship line from New York . to SawFrancisco, says : . There seems to be some foundation for . the ramor that Mr. Roberts and Commodore . Vanderbilt have settled their difiloalty in regard to the [sthmus transit, and that the opposition line will not be started. The Granada and Moses Taylor have been start. ed for the Pacific, and the former was last Spoken near the equator on her voyage down. The Coatzacoalcos was bought as a . substitute for the Star of the West, the . third boat formerly. announced and has . been well refitted for her work. On the . dth inst, she meade her trial trip, and on Saturday she had 500 tuns of coal on board and it was supposed she wonld clear for the Pacific. We cannot learn that she has sailed, and if there is any truth in the ramor that the parties have cometo terms, we suppose that she will be kept on this side. The statement is that Mr. Roberts, who was not very well used by his old associates in the former settlement between the Commodore and the Pacific MailCompany and who was seeking employment for his steamers, not otherwise provided for by opening an opposition line toSan Francisco via Tehauntepec, has now been admitted by Vanderbilt to a partnership in the Atlantic service of the old route. {f this be so, and the new lineis thus suffered to collapse, we trust that the boats sent to the Pacifio will not be brought back to the Atlantic, but carefully employed in developing the trade of the southwest coast, thus affording fresh facilities for a communication annually growing in importance, $$ in Sate or Princrparitigs.—The President . has issued a proclamation for the gale, in . October next, of four and three-quarter millions of acres of public lands in Minnesota, . and for sale next month, of seven millions of acres in Kansas and Nebraska. Here is territory enough to set upahalf dozen kingdoms of the European dimensions. Belgium, Holland, Hanover, the Papal States, and the Swiss Confederation, are each only about one-halfas large as the j territory now brought to the hammer. . Greece contains two thousand square miles j less. No one of the German States of’ -Wurtemburg, Saxony, Baden, Hesse Uassel, Hesse Darmstardt, Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Oldenburg, or Nassau, is much more than two-thirds of this extent ; and in fact all of them except Wurtemburg are less than one fourth of it. The other German States do notin the aggregate, exceed one-half of this amount of territory. ‘Tuscany, Parma, Lucca and Modena, added together, would wake about seven-tenths of it. This superfluous slice of our public lands which we are putting upat auction, is about one. sixth as large as Great Britain herself, onetenth as large as France and Turkey, and one-fifth as large as Prussia, Truly, there isspace enough here for manufacturing principalities and powers without number, and without ever missing the ground. . When it all gets nicely fenced in, and the sovereigns have taken possession, the Lilliputian kingdoms of European sovereigns will not be worth comparing with our Brobdigoagian dimensions, Dova.as at Syracuse.—A dispatch from Syracuse, N. Y., of Sept. 18th, says : Douglas arrived here yesterday morning, on his way from Clifton Springs. On his . arrival here and during the day he has been the recipient of honors, He spoke yesterday afternoon to a crowd of over thirty ; thousand people, assembled in a five-acre lot. His speeches embraced some new arguments on points not before touched upon by him. He explained that the difference between popular sovereignty and squatter sovereignty was that squatter sovereignty was outside of the Constitution and in rebellion against the Federal Government, while popular sovereignty is inside the Constitution and in obedience to Federal authority. In answer to Republicans, he stated that Jefferson was Minister to France when the ordinance of 1787 was adopted, ; and knew nothing about it till afterwards, and that Jefferson’s plan for the government of territories, which was adopted in 1784, was the fullest recognizance of the . right of popular sovereignty, A Goon Union Stkoncuorp.——A letter from Warrenton, Ala., says: “This (Marshall) is a Union-loving Douglas county; so . are all the adjoining counties, and in fact . the same may be said of North Alabama. . Marshall votes some 1,450, and I think J . am safe in saying that if the vote were ta . ken to-day, Douglas would get 1,000, TWENTY TO Ons ror DouGLas,—A corres. pondent of the Memphis Appeal, writing . from Galloway, Tennessee, says : “The peo. ple are for Douglas; in the counties of Fayette, Tipton and Shelby, where I am conversant, there are twenty Douglas to one . Breckinridye man,’"#
