NEVADA. DEMOCRAT. _
SDNESDAY MORNING, OCT. 7, 1857.
existence in New York and other cities, in consequence of few stupendous failures, which
pave resulted in producing numerous cases of
bankruptcy on a smaller seale. The Ohie Life
and Trust Oompany led off witha failure for
some $7,000,000—then followed the suspensions .
of several heavy bankers, merchants, &c., aud .
a few country banks, The panic had not affected the New England nor Western States, and
the New York papers were predicting that the
worst was over. ; : :
Hvrnicase.—A terrible hurricane swept over
Woodland, Wisconsin, about the first of September, destroying every house in the village.
The telegraph lines were prostrated and railroad tracks badly damaged. Mr. Fox, station
ageft, was run over and instantly killed by a
train of freight cars Which the violence of th
wind had set in motion. "4
Minnesota.— Advices from St. Paul bring the
pleasing intelligence that the Conference Committees appointed by the two Conventions had
finally agreed upon submitting but one Constitution to the people of Minnesota, and that each
body had'approved the action of the Joint Committee. This secures the adoption of the Constitution by the people, and the admission of
Minnesota to the sisterbood of American States
beyond a reasonable doubt.
Atrexrt To Poison a Wire.—John B. Robertson, Cashier of the Eagle Bank, Rocbester, N,
Y., wasarrested on the 2d of September, charged with attempting to produce the death of his
wife by administering drugs ef a slow but dead_
ly nature. The evidence against him is said to
be conclusive. The accused waived an cxamination and gave bail for his appearance. The
announcement of the arrest created a profound
sensation in Rochester.
Tux Speakersuir.—Mesers. Phelps of Missou: , Houston of Alabama,
"Virginia, and J. Glancy
Fare carrying on an active canvass for Sp of the House of Representativyes. Mr. Orr it is thought will win.
Tue Ursn Exrepirron.—In consequence of
the great number of desertions among tle troops
designed for Utah, the military expedition to
that territory has been virtually abandoned.—.
An eseort will go out with Governor Cumming.
Gen. Harney has been relieved from the command.
Tue Texas Evecrion.—-The Galveston News of
the 19th Aug., says that returns from ninety
counties of Texas have been received, and that
Burnell, the Democratic candidate for Governor, is eight or nine thousand ahead. White's
majority over Crosby in the Western Congress.
ional District, is 4,000, and in the Eastern, Rea.
gan’s majority over Evana is nearly 5,000.
Tuk Missovui Stare Evecrioy.—The result of
the Missouri clection has at length beeu decided.
The official returus give stewart, Dem., a majority of 334. This in an aggregate vote of upwarde of 95,000, is pretty close.
AProIntTMENTS BY THE Presipest.+ Beverley
Tucker, of Virginia, Consu! at’ Liverpool, iu
place of Nathaniel Hawthorne, resigned; Henry
W. Spencer, of New York, Consul at Paris, in
place of Duncan K. MeRae, resigned; John Endlich, of Pennsylvania, Consul at Basle, in place
of Danie! 8. Leg, deceased; Charles J. Fox, of
Michigan, Contul ‘at Aspinwall, in place) of
Francis A. Thornton, resigned; Ernest Volger,
of Virgiuvia, Consul at Barcelona, ia place of
Pablo Anguera, the present incumbent; Jacob
Forney, of Pennsylvania, Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Utah; J. B. Danforth, Jr., Purser in the Navy, vice Joho V. Dobbin, resigned; .
Charles E. Sinclair, Associate Justice for the
Territory of Utah, vice Stiles, removed.
Trait of Apical. GaRDNER FOR Mcrper.—
Boston, Sept. 4th.—The trial of Abigail Gardner,
for the murder of her husband, Hosea James
Gardner, late Postmaster at Hingham, by administering arsenic to him, has oecupied the .
Sapreme Judicial Court, in session at Plymouth,
nearly the whole week. The theory of the defence is the absence of direct proof, the uncertainty of circumstantial evidence, the want of
motive, and the probability that deceased poisoned himself. The evidence and arguments
closed last night, and Judge Merrick charged
the Jury this forenoon.
Previous to the Judge’s charge Mrs. Gardner
addressed the Jury. She labored under much
excitement, and frequently burst iuio tears, but
solemaly declared her eutire innocence of the
crime.
The Jury retired at 10} o’clock this morning.
and came into Court again at 64 o'clock this
evening, unable to agree upon a verdict. The
Court then instructed thefh to deliberate further, but there is no prospect of their bringing
in # verdict to-night.
Kansas.—Gov. Walker, in his official dispatches, says that on one point he has been
gressly misrepresented, namely, as desiring that
every maa should vote who happened to be in
the Territory on the day of the election for the
ratification of the Constitution. This, he remarks, would be desirable, if there were ‘“‘conelusive’ evidence that all such persons were
actual ‘bona fide’ settlers; but the only sufficient
and usual proof of such a fact would be some
previous residence. On this point, which is one
of detail, he had never proposed to make suggestions to the Convention, although when asked hie opinion by members of that body, he had
indicated a previous residence of three or six .
months, and that the same qualification should
be adopted in the Constitution, in regard not
enly to that, but to all future elections, and, in.
his jud-ment, one or other of these terms will .
be adopted by the Convention, from whom he .
anticipates cordial codperation. “It is some.
what extraordinary,”’ he adds, “that while this
accusation of letting every man vote who ma
to be in the Territory on the day of el-.
action, has been preferred in the South, as indieating @ desire an my part to let in abolition
vagrants and interlo to contro] the result,
the Republicans of Kaneas have drawn an entirely different conclusion, viz: that I designed
in this manger te bring many thousand Missourians into the Territory to decide the contest.”
An Immense Fortcyxe Discoverep.—An immaense fortune left by Judge Leonard, a resident
of Princeton, before the Revolution, the Gazette says, has been found by the discovery of
seme old documents to beleng to others than
the present helders. [It includes a large quantity of land, now very valuable, the majority of
which lies in New Jersey. Among other property are about 1,500 acres on Deep Run, towards Amboy; 10,000 acres at the head of Great
Harbor river; 350 acres in Princeton, extending from the eentre of the town along both
sider the road towards Rocky Hill, now called
inceton street, and. embracing some of the
t improvements; 600 acres on Cape Fear

principal of that debt was paid off in various
sutme, at different times between 1818 and 1822,
but no interest was paid. In 1825 Congress
passed an act authorizing interest to be computed and paid at the Treasury. This was’ done,
but, in making the calculation, all the payments
were applied to the principal, reducing the sum
upon which interest was allowed by the full
amount of each payment, and allowing no interest at all after the debt bad thus been extinguished. Maryland never was satisfied with
this. She continued to memorialize Congress
for a more liberal adjustment of her claim, but
never succeeded until the last day of the last
session, when the act under consideration was
passed. The Attorney-General rendered an
able decision upon the subject, The amount
involved was about three hundied thousand dollars, and we learn that the money was on Saturday paid.— Washington Union.
ExpLoraTioN oF THE Rto Cororano.—The
Washington correspondent of the New York
Times, under date of April 4, says:
The main portion of the party which goes out
under command of Lieut. Ives, for the exploration of the Rio Colorade, will start in the Star
ef the West to morrow, en route for California.
It is the intention of Licut. Ives to proceed immediately to the Gulf of California, from San
Francisco, in a sailing vessel, taking with him
the matcrials of a small steamey. On reaching
the mouth of the Colorado, this steamer will be
put together, when the party will forthwith
commence the assent ef the river.
The expedition of Lieut. Ives, it is allowed,
