The liveliest dis. cussion of the state of affairs in Missouri prevailed in all quarters at Washington. Intercepted letters written by secessionists, members of the Maryland Legislatare shows . that traitor members of that body formed . an elaborate scheme for passing a secession ordinance and an attempt to inaugurate armed rebellion in that state against the Government, Summary measures for repressing it alone saved the State the horrors . of civil war. It is estimated that General Patterson’s campaigna in Virginia cost the Government . ten million dollars, The result was only the capture of twenty fugitives slaves, all of whom were returned to their masters. Lane has issued a proclamation to the citizens of western Missouri, ordering all rebels to disperse or they will be summarily dealt with. Press, the Southerners must be ina fierce state of pauic, The papers, from Richmond to New Orleans, are loudin their denutciation atthe negligence of the Confederate Government, in failing to held Hatteras Inlet, These comments are having their effect. The greatest activity: prevails all along the coast. Military companies are organized and established along the const for the purpose of preventing a landing at any time; and their forte—sand bags and mud forte—are beiag additionally garrisoned. But ammunition is exceedingly scarce with them, and so are arms. In all the principal cities, and in the military districte ofeach State, agents bave been ap: pointed to collect all the smal] arms to be spared by the citizens and planters. But judging from the labored logic of the calls of the agents, who are advertising extensively, the idea prevails among the planters that small arms are needed at home. Labored arguments are made to show that there is no necessity for such fears—tLat the slavee are faithful, “Have they not always proved ro?” asks one bombastic article. “The devotion of the slave to his master is proverbial throughout the country.’’ But still the planters do not agree with them in this idea.
