A Marching Song for U. 8. Regimonts.
BY WILLIAM RO@S WALLACE,
We are marching, sternly marching in a grand and
awful time
For the honor and the grandeur, and the glory of our
lime;
Yor its Constitution threatened ; for its Flag already
smote,
Where it had a sacred Charter right forever more to
float;
Yor the freedom of our children, and the millions yet
to be
Where the greatness of a Washington has hallowed
land and sea !
We are marching, stern!y marching, for a grand and
holy cause.
For the golden right of Order and the, majesty of
laws! ;
0! He who from rent chaos took, of old, the awful
curse,
‘And with His wand of Order raised the starry untverse—
Ol He will surely smile on those who march but to
restore
The laws that mace thelr native land so great and
good before!
We are marching, sternly marching, but no haste is
in our souls—
Not for revenge a sword is drawn—n single cannon
rolls:
Still dear our brothers, though in wrong—yes, dear
despite of all,
But dear is our mother yet, and she shall never
fall!
That mother ia out Country, who has rocked us on
her breast—
The hope of all the Continents—the glory of the
West!
We are marching, sternly marching, in a grand and
awful time,
For the honor, and the grandeur, and the glory of
our clime: :
And here we swear, no matter how our bosoms may
be wrung
With pity for the traitor host, our banner shall be
flung
In all its primal splendor to yoo consecrated sky—
The Constitution shall not fall—the Nation shall not
die!
Tae Axcxstors oF Gen. MCULELLAN.—
Win. Nesbitt, of New York, a Scotchman,
eays in a communication te one of the New
York papers :
By accounts I have lately received from
Kirkcudbright my native place—I leara that
(den. McClellan isa deecendant of a very
ancient and illustrious Galloway family—
the McCiellans of Kirkendbright and Bombie, allied to the ancient *Kuights of Lochinvar.”’ The families were ennobled by
Charles I in 1633, the then representative,
Sir Robert McClellan, of Bombie, being
created a peer under the title of Lord Kirkeudbright. The last Lord of that name
died about thirty years ago, in rather reduced circumstances, leaving no issue, the ti.
tle is now extinct. The ruins of the old
family castle now form the moat conspicuous object in the ancient burg of Kirkcud.bright, on the banks of the river Dee,
Many of the deeds of the McClellans are
still recounted in the legendary lore of
the district. The name of McClellan has
always been associated with all that is noble, patriotic and daring, and I am prond
to think that in the person of the noble
American scion, it ig still eo. Sir William McClellan, an ancestor of the above
family, also fell at Flodden.
Strautan Deatu.—A singular case of
death occarred lately at Milwaukie, Michigan. A young man named William Smith
wns about to celebrate his union with a
beautiful girl to whom he was greatly attached. The couple appeared to be ia the
seveoth heaven of happiness, and the bridegroom, who was not by any means a Paritan in bis habits, was entertainiog a numerous company at table in honor of the event,
All of a sudden. he cast a peenliar glance
toward his wife, who modestly averted her
own eyes before bis, and when she again
raised them, he had ceased to exist. At first
the usual causes of sudden death were suggested, buton an autopsy being takeo,
there was found in the concavity of the diaery oe a diamond of the first water, which
ad pierced the tissues and occasioned his
sudden taking off. It was then recollected
that the bride-groom, while travelling in
the interior of Brazil, bad found a diamond
of great value, whieh, being attacked by
outlaws, he bad swallowed rather than part
with, Thediamond had been five years
lodged in his body, It proved in a manner
. ro of life assurance for the bereaved
ride.
Protograruina Cotors.—The celebrated daguerreotypist, Niepec de Santi Victor,
has at last discovered the secret of reproducing colors by the camera and rendcring
them permanent, He has subjected pictures taken by his new method for several
hours to the direct action of the solar rays,
withoat producing any visible change in
the tints, Blue, which has hitherto been
regarded as well nigh unattainable in the
photograph, is now copied vividly. The
The Paris Monitear, which brings this intelligence, does not give the process.
Miss Wmpsr, a young Belgian lady, who
bas taken up the cause of Women’s Rights,
with great zealand ability, says that “the
nether garment was first worn in a bifurcated form by the women of anvient Judah.
The exolosive claim which man so pertinaciously maintains to the use of thie garment
is purely arbitrary, without o solitary argament to support it—not even that of
prior possession.’’? So, then, itis the men
who have usurped the breeches, and the
women are only trying to recover their own.
Tae most foolish thing in the world is
said to be, “To bow to the rich till you are
uuable to stand erect in the presence of an
honest man.” '
. Grain Suipments 1N 1861.—A late Eog‘lish paper has the following : wana TN ac EET BOT ae
The aggregate value of the grain importations of the first half of the present year) WHEELER & WILSON?’S
are estimated at $105,000,000, against $47,000,000 in 1860, Of this total about $72,000,000 represents wheat and flour, our im
portatious of which iv the tame period of
1860 were below $15,000,000. Io 1859
France sent the chief supplies, and contributed abuut as much as Russia, Prussia
and the United States combined, while
from America the amount was merely .
nominal. In 1860 Prussia took the lead,
Russia was second, and the quantity from
France was insigoicant. This year America has distanced all other countries, and
sent nearly as much as Prussia, Russia and
France combined, the quantity from the .
latter being less even than in 1860,
