a ’ is J £ Fs ov ; eye, {3.434 : The Black Horsemen of the rebels io Virginia bave beeome celebrated for their achievemencs, and have done more, perhaps than any other rebeb military organization, to inspire our army with apprehension and tho enemy with confidence. Their history is not devoid of interest. Several years ag the leading slaveholders of Fauquier county, Virginia, organized a secret polltical association, wider the title of the ‘Black Horsemen.”’ The Black Horse was regarded asa symbol of the negro race; and no.one was admitted to membership who was nota slave owner, Warrenton was the place of meeting; aud, like the Knights of the Golden Uircle, secret passwords and sigus were employed to apprise the initiated of the presence of bretbren. They were bound by the obligation of matual aid in defense of their association, and of “Southern Rights’? generally. They controlled the political matters of that sec tion of Virginia, and_no person who did not subscribe to théfr Conetitution and principles conld be elected to office. The raid of old John Brown was the signal for them to assume a military character, They appeared in force, and were found to represent the whole district of alae country, They were brought out to defend Harper’s Ferry, and assist at the execution ot Brown and his coadjutors, It was the parading of these men around the scaifold of the brave old maa that caused that barbarons délay of ten minutes after the adjustment of the rope and cap, apd the placing tho victim on the drop, prior to performing the last act of the tragedy. pon the opening of the war ‘the commander of the “Black Horsemen’’ gave notice that he intended to make every attack on. Sanday, and invited all the people to unity in prayer on that day for the success of the rebel cause, #0 that perhaps they might he invoking Heaven in bis behalf at the very time that be was charging .on the Union army. The people of the valley are enthusiastic ip theic adherence to this organization, and they cling to its symbol, tho ‘Black Horse,’’ or negro, with romane tio devotion, as did the Cameronians of Scotland two centuries ago to the Solemn League and Covenant, They are perfectly fanatical in the matter, They detest Northern men and adore the rebel cause, Perhaps nowhere, not even in South Carolina, Mississippi, or Arkansas, are the population so venomous in their treason, and hape of the American Union,—[New York ort, Insane rrom Howmestckness.—Dr. Hunt, of Baffalo, who is now stationed at Newport News, writes to the paper which he formerly edited—the Express: You have learned, perbaps, of that form of camp homesickness which develops itself into insanity, and is written down ino the books as ia; It is asingolar and painfully interesting phenomenon. One of them only bas been developed noder my eye, The man came here almo t entirely recovered from fever, and claimed himself to be entirely well, refusing medicines and talking a A rationally about everything but home, Day after day, as the boat came to the dock, he would pack bis knapsack qitietly, say good-bye to his ward mates, aod march down to the wharf only to be disappointed and to find out, as he more forcibly than elegantly expressed it, that ‘it was not the right boat; it was another d——d boat.” Atnight,in his sleep, he talked continuously of wife and child; day times he said little; but, finally, be made a confidant of me, and said that all night and all day he dreamed and thought of home, and sometimes, perbaps, it made bim lightheated, To bad been a year in the service, and always gay and bappy ap to the period of bis recent illness, His family lives in New York, and one morning I had the happiness to see Charley march down to the boat with his neatly-s'ung koapsack, and it was the right boat that time. He bas been . at homea fortnight now, andI have no donbt will return to his regiment a good soldier, To have kept bim bere would have ended, probably, in suicide. The inexperienced genera) practitioner, having neither oppertunity nor time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with their pathology, comenly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an thdiscriminate use of that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mercury. More caution, however, should be-wsed by thesyphilitie patient, in gousulting nominal physicians of the advertising class, as nine-tenths of them are imposters, who assume German, French, or other names, and are without any claims to medioalienc wledge.
