The Black Horsemen of the rebels io
Virginia bave beeome celebrated for their
achievemencs, and have done more, perhaps
than any other rebeb military organization,
to inspire our army with apprehension and
tho enemy with confidence. Their history
is not devoid of interest. Several years
ag the leading slaveholders of Fauquier
county, Virginia, organized a secret polltical association, wider the title of the
‘Black Horsemen.”’ The Black Horse was
regarded asa symbol of the negro race;
and no.one was admitted to membership
who was nota slave owner, Warrenton
was the place of meeting; aud, like the
Knights of the Golden Uircle, secret passwords and sigus were employed to apprise
the initiated of the presence of bretbren.
They were bound by the obligation of matual aid in defense of their association, and
of “Southern Rights’? generally. They
controlled the political matters of that sec
tion of Virginia, and_no person who did
not subscribe to théfr Conetitution and
principles conld be elected to office.
The raid of old John Brown was the signal for them to assume a military character, They appeared in force, and were
found to represent the whole district of
alae
country, They were brought out to defend Harper’s Ferry, and assist at the execution ot Brown and his coadjutors, It
was the parading of these men around the
scaifold of the brave old maa that caused
that barbarons délay of ten minutes after
the adjustment of the rope and cap, apd
the placing tho victim on the drop, prior
to performing the last act of the tragedy.
pon the opening of the war ‘the commander of the “Black Horsemen’’ gave notice that he intended to make every attack
on. Sanday, and invited all the people to
unity in prayer on that day for the success
of the rebel cause, #0 that perhaps they
might he invoking Heaven in bis behalf at
the very time that be was charging .on the
Union army. The people of the valley are
enthusiastic ip theic adherence to this organization, and they cling to its symbol,
tho ‘Black Horse,’’ or negro, with romane
tio devotion, as did the Cameronians of
Scotland two centuries ago to the Solemn
League and Covenant, They are perfectly
fanatical in the matter, They detest Northern men and adore the rebel cause, Perhaps nowhere, not even in South Carolina,
Mississippi, or Arkansas, are the population so venomous in their treason, and hape of the American Union,—[New York

on account of the numerous causes which produce
them) which diseases of any kind take upon the human system; operating, as they do frequently, both
on the mental and physical organs, It seeks to Mcuperate and restore the functions to their natural
and proper status, as well as to neutralize all antagonistic influences to which the system is continually

€aution to the Public.
Every intelligent and thinking person must knew
course, a disease, or, even the sim) le disturbance of a . that remedies handed .out for general use sheald
single function, frequently beeomes an affair of imminent danger when least expected, To this the attention of the physician of Npecialities is always earhest given. With pr per perceptive powers, added
to ample experience, he is necessarily able to arrive
with unerring certainty to a correct conclusion as to
the character of the ailment and the proper appliavces for its cure. This f have never found to fail.
A remedy properly administered, and at the proper
time, is sure to accomplish the object of its mission,
provided it be directed by the hands of a skilful
physician, who knows his business. 1 need not reiterate the old adage, that ‘‘Health is the endorsement of Divinity,” sent to us for our own benefit,
and that we should not for a moment disregard the
secret admonitions that tell us to beware lest we fall
imperceptibly into a laybyrinth from which it willbe
much more difficult to escape than if we had given
proper attention to ourselves before venturing so far.
Consult your physician before it is tow late; confide
in him, and you will save yourself an infinity of saffering.

always injurious.
TictLa®in selecting his physiciam, as it is wlamentable yet incontrovertible fact that many syphilitic
patients are made miserable with ruined constitutions
by maf-treatment frova inexperienced physicians in
general practive; fer it is a point generally conceded
by the best syphilographers, that the study and management of these complaints shoula engross the whole
time of those who would be competent and successful
in their treatment and cure. The inexperienced genera) practitioner, having neither oppertunity nor
time to make himself sufficiently acquainted with
their pathology, comenly pursues one system of treatment, in most cases making an thdiscriminate use of
that antiquated and dangerous weapon, mercury.
More caution, however, should be-wsed by thesyphilitie patient, in gousulting nominal physicians of
the advertising class, as nine-tenths of them are imposters, who assume German, French, or other
names, and are without any claims to medioalienc wledge. These knavish rascala infest all large cities,
and, by means of their lying advertisements and posters, they induce the unwary to enter their Peter

and poison them with mercury. Personsliving at a
distance in the country are more apt to be duped by
the lying notices of quacks than citizens,

there is a particle of disease left in the system it will

be handed down to an innocent offspring. Persons
who have been treated with mercury should be very
cautious in aiering that they are well, for it is a
