Removep.—The New York World thus describes the mannerin which McClellan’s
army was removed from the Peninsula:
It would be a grent mistake to suppose
that the army which Gen, McClellan withdrew on Saturday from Harrison's Landing was as strong as the one with which he
took up that position after the seven days’
battle, Quite a proportion of his best
troops were taken away piecemeal and preceded himin the retreat. Burnside was
ordered to the vicinity of James river, it
was ostensibly to reinforce McClellan, but

Terrible Retribution for
the Murder of
Gen. McCook.
The Boston Traveler of August 21st
says:
_Our correspondent connected with the
division of Gen, McCook, at Battle Creek,
Tenn., furnishes ue with the following authentic account of the terrible retribution
upon the inhabitants living near the scene
of the murder, by the Ohio 9th:
“The 9th Ohio is a German regiment, and
was raised by Brig. Gen. Willich, now commanding Geo. Jobnson’s brigade in our division, This regiment were wholly devoted
to Gen, McCook; they loved him’ with all
the ardor of the German oul, and on}
awaited an opportenity to attest their fidelity by their heroic daring. To enrage euch
men is to ensure terrible vengeance, And
this they carried out npon the inbabitants
of the country around the scene of this
cold-blooded murder, The next morping
the entire regiment, smarting under the loss
of their noble commander, and their rage
‘ntensified by nursing their passion during
the previous night, proceeded to scour the
country. Every citizen they found they
showor hung—every house they passed, unless positive proof was given of their Union
sentiment, was Burned tg the ground with
all its contents, while the women and children were compelled to stand by and see it
burn, In this way seme 75 citizens were
made to pay the vindictive penalty for this
guerilla attack, and, nodoubtedly, many of
them received a merited death, But some,
alas, it is feared, suffered wrongfally the
fearful punishment, It is not my nature to
justify such proceedings; but it can but
teach the people of Tennessee that jn this
